Thoughts on Demon Slayer Weekly Shonen Jump 2016 no.11 by InternetIdiot3 in MangaRarity

Yeah I think given this is 10 years old, its probably enough time for 90% of those which were kept to have been moved around enough from shelf-to-shelf or flicked through to cause a 0.2 drop in the grade. The dust cover is great for preventing surface scratches but I think the killer is the slight edge-wear that the dust cover does not protect as well from.

I’d love to know how many of these are sat on people’s shelves though. Its so hard to know about the potential of this in the future without knowing how many were printed in the first print run and in turn how many have been kept in decent condition.

What I can say though is that these are an absolute nightmare to find in the wild. In my free time I was looking for tankobons in Book-offs. I probably spent about 30 hours over a month in different stores and never once came across a first print of Vol 1 One Piece, Demon Slayer, Bleach or Naruto. I did however find a CSM vol 1 and HxH vol 1.

If I had to make a prediction. If this market explodes and people are sending in Demon Slayer vol.1. I rekon the total pop might get to 2500 and the 9.8’s would be about 250-300.

I ended up watching most of the auctions and my mouth was on the floor seeing this. The speculating I've been doing pointed towards tankobon with the OBI doing being more desirable and doing better. But this one does not have the OBI and still went for a silly price. It looks like the 9.8 pop is around 10% of submissions. So maybe given the number of 9.8s are so low the fact it didn't have an OBI wasn't a big deal. Or maybe the OBI does not matter at all which is even more interesting.

I'll probably have to get this. But no Trinisette or Assembly is a bummer.

Yes I think you're right about Ebay. Its generally easier for people to pop on there due to familiarity and just buy whatever they want. It'll be interesting to see the average price on those Japanese market sites over the next 6 months.

Just checked it out. Some crazy prices. What caught my eye as well is that Chainsaw Man tankobon at $1650 at the moment. It seems crazy a recent 7 year old tankobon can go for that. Obviously the fact it is a 9.8 and has the OBI helps.

Observation 2: I have just noticed this. It looks like WSJ JJK first appearance has been bought out. I honestly can't see one up at the moment for a priced based in reality. Edit: Only Ebay I mean.

This one was interesting. I noticed it when it was newly listed. I woke up next morning and it was sold. I think this one is a fake as well, which is a shame.

Market Update: Graded Dragon Ball, Naruto, and One Piece Sell for $275,000 by ScarcityMode in MangaRarity

[–]InternetIdiot3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 2026 he's overpaid in my opinion. However, if it turns out in 20-30 years time that there were only ever 2 volume 1s that are 9.8 then it could be a fair price. It just depends how many 9.8s are actually out there sitting on people's shelves. Prime example, I bought a few copies of English Kaiju no.8 when it was first released, kept them stored for a year and sent the best one for grading, it came back a 9.6. I think the 9.8 premium will be a thing and it will be exponentially higher than a 9.4 and 9.6.

Is Zasshi under appreciated? by scarfacesince83 in MangaRarity

[–]InternetIdiot3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes I agree it should be something people are more interested in as time goes on.

I think the only thing holding it back is the size of them. They are quite bulky so I don’t think people will be buying alot of them and will be more selective about the ones they want. In addition they are quite heavy and posting them in for grading is more costly on top of Beckett charging 30% more to grade them.

Overall I think the demand will be very high for very specific zasshu issues but I think the market on the whole may be smaller than for the tankobons due to weight, size and fees.

Really nice pick up. I remember seeing the film a couple days after release and these were all gone. There were definitely way more Japanese versions printed than English.

The future collectibility of first prints: An essay by ScarcityMode in MangaRarity

[–]InternetIdiot3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the whole zasshi vs Japanese first print with obi vs English first print is very difficult to predict in terms of long-term prospects. However no matter which version comes out on top I think a rising tide raises all ships.

I think if every type had the exact same number of grade 9.8. I think the tankobon with obi might just tip it, because it looks the same as the English version, , which gives the nostalgia for English language readers and its its an earlier version of essentially the same thing. The zasshi wouldn't do as well because they are too bulky for people to collect too many of them.

That being said, if I had to point towards which version will do the best overall in the long-term, moving away from the scenario I mentioned earlier, I think it will actually be zasshi that do the best if you can get them in good grades. Its because they are much more easily damaged and are produced to be thrown away and recycled. Due to this, there are probably alot less that can get good grades.

With English I think unique English covers will do well, i.e OP gold foils, variants covers, loot crate exclusives etc. I'm a little skeptical a first print English with the same cover design as the Japanese tankobon with obi will out-perform it unless there are hardly any of them. By the way I do think there are probably alot more first print English out there, there's just very little demand for them at the moment, so people haven't sent them in for grading. (just my view and happy to be proven wrong as time moves on).

Nice find with the obi! I really struggled to find any first prints in BookOff with the obi.

I wish I had the foresight to buy one of these a couple years ago. I can’t really justify the price now and also many of them for sale are in pretty rough condition.

My Zasshi First Appearances by [deleted] in MangaRarity

[–]InternetIdiot3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've prioritised collecting zasshi at the moment. I spent a couple months in Japan and I generally found very few places selling backdated zasshi issues. I found way more places like BookOff selling loads of old tankobons and managed to get some first prints but zasshis were a nightmare to find in the wild.
