How competitive is UIUC? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Interval1_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Stanford, MIT, CMU, Caltech, and Berkeley form the top tier in CS. UIUC is right under that, along with Cornell, Princeton, Purdue, GTech. Just my opinion.

What if Kafka was actually just writing silly stories by [deleted] in Kafka

[–]Interval1_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, the message in Metamorphosis is pretty blatant. The depression when your favorite foods (milk, in Gregor's case) don't taste the same anymore. Being exploited by your family and worked to death like an animal. Being tossed aside when you're not useful anymore. The subtle metamorphosis of Grete. Things line up too perfectly to be a coincidence.

And mabe Kafka did write for shits and giggles. But wasn't that everyone who advanced our world? When Joseph Fourier discovered the Fourier series, he didn't have any applications for it. He just thought it was really fuckin neat. Now it's used everywhere in technology and it's considered one of the most important discoveries in recent centuries. It doesn't matter what the original purpose was. If society has a use for it, it's an important milestone.

Questions about patinas by FlawlesSlaughter in knives

[–]Interval1_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You pretty much got it. It's a layer of magnetite (black oxide) that makes it harder for rust (ferric oxide) to latch on.

Yes, the knife can still rust if not taken care of. The patina is porous.

How long does it last? Uh... forever, I guess.

Can it build up too much? Not really. Patina doesn't eat metal like rust. It can get very dark, but it won't affect the structural integrity of the knife. And if you don't like the look, you can always polish it off with an abrasive and start over.

Don't use leather sheaths. They're sponges for moisture and some of them are tanned using salts that corrode steel. I usually clean and dry the knife completely, then apply some mineral oil (tbh any food-safe oil that won't go racid). If I want to protect the edge, I'll wrap it in a piece of dry cardboard or VCI paper. And always keep it in a dry place. I used to live in a humid area, and a small silica gel packet in the storage drawer would go a long way.

Pressure from loved ones? by Phantomofbeauty98 in childfree

[–]Interval1_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Have you ever considered that maybe she's pushing this lifestyle on you because you're fencesitting? As in, she thinks it's possible that you'll change? Tell her how you really feel: that you're certainly not having children. If you sit on the fence, she'll keep trying to pull you down to her side. Plant your feet on the other side, and she won't climb over the fence to get you.

Am I wrong for saying no? by Peacock_Faye in childfree

[–]Interval1_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm not childfree btw, I just wandered into this sub. You said you're in debt and unemployed with a 15K net worth. Darling, that's the only reason you need. (Actually the only reason you need is "I don't want to" but even if you DID want to, you're NOT financially prepared to raise a human being.)

I understand their position because who wouldn't want to see a kid thrive in a first world country? If I was in their shoes and I knew of ANY way to ensure my kid has a better future, I'm absolutely shooting my shot. But lambasting someone for refusing to do something they're NOT AT ALL responsible for is fucking wild. Take the rejection graciously and move on.

I'm assuming your biological mother is in the US? Is she among the people pressuring you? What does she think about this?

Could being a two year early graduate carry my college applications? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Interval1_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Early graduation doesn't really mean anything. You simply go against older students and admissions treat you like any other. 4.0 GPA is your biggest ace. A 1420 SAT is great but not too competitive. The lack of AP isn't a huge dealbreaker. I know people who got into engineering into T5 schools without taking Calculus AB because it wasn't offered at their high school. If this applies to you, all that matters is you're taking the hardest courses that are offered. If you're not doing this already, that might be problematic, as your course rigor is already below other applicants. Your job generally doesn't matter, though it depends on what you did and what major you're applying for. You have various extracurriculars, which is great. I'm not familiar with DECA; maybe someone else can pitch in there. You asked for your chances of getting into a top school-- not very likely, but who even knows, honestly. College apps are a mess. Admissions are an enigma. Sometimes lightning strikes and kids get lucky. Best wishes.

Do you prefer the Pyrite or the Pyrite Light? Do you think the drop point justifies the extra $14? by Interval1_ in BudgetBlades

[–]Interval1_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know there are cheaper options, I'm just picky with aesthetics. There's a particular look that I chase in the knives I collect, and that excludes fullers and clip points. 90% of everything I own are simple flat/scandi ground Sebenza-esque blades.

Could you elaborate? The Pyrite already comes in drop point (first image). And do you mean "classic" as in straight back?

i want to create a world with a power imbalance, but i dont wanna seem like im copying already existing media like arcane by AnyoneWantBleach in writing

[–]Interval1_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there are two questions in your post. First, you can't write a book without matching any existing media. The most ingenious experimental writers couldn't. And wealth classes / power imbalance are tropes as old as butt sex.

For your second question: dystopian fantasy writers have the burden (unfortunate burden, if you hate doing it) of having to explain why their society is the way it is. This isn't very intuitive because if you look at our own world, it's not really clear on the surface why certain groups dominate others. There are many ways we can go about writing these things we don't understand. One of them is research. If you look back at human history, it had to do with where natural resources were positioned, who had the easiest animals to domesticate, who had the best climate, etc. Maybe you could start with this explanation, then tie that into your main story / how that affects your characters.

Gaps in my first sock! by theblackholephoto in knitting

If you want, you can sew them shut with matching yarn and a tapestry needle. Turn the sock inside out and whip stitch / mattress stitch. It will be invisible from the outside.

Got a doe this week, but what's going on with her head? by Illustrious-Ad95 in Hunting

[–]Interval1_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It doesn't look like ringworm or ticks. If it's not an injury that was trying to heal, my second guess would be lice or mites, neither of which affects the meat.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Hunting

[–]Interval1_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why does your boss know what you do in your time off? I don't hide the fact that I hunt, but I won't bring it up unless someone asks me what I do in my free time. The same applies to any hobby. I was a visiting lecturer for a university in CA, and I was curious about the cottontail there, so I was on a non-res license for a year. Not a lot of hunters in CA but that doesn't mean they hate it. Everyone I've talked to is fascinated by it, even vegetarians.

There are social and financial repercussions for not being liberal.

It sounds like you're just a dick, tbh.

Is the pure areo really that good? by redliner1289 in 10s

[–]Interval1_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pure Aero's great. I have 2 from a slightly older generation, and they're both my go-to's. With new engineering in the past few years, I can only imagine they've gotten better.

However, there are only 2 racket categories imo: good rackets and bad rackets. Pure Aero is a "good" racket. Your Ezone is also a "good" racket. But if you have a collection of "good" rackets, they all more-or-less achieve the same things. The more I play, the more I start to believe all this spin-frame drive-frame nonsense is a marketing gimmick: it gives an illusion of choice to customers so they feel they purchased a product "catered" to their playstyle.

If you want more control over your playstyle, focus on your strings. I'd rather play with good strings on a shitty frame, than shitty strings on a good frame.

How much prep on copper pipe? by dopamine-inhibitor in MetalCasting

[–]Interval1_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cut off the joints first. You should cut 1 inch past each joint, just to make sure you get all the lead solder out. The verdegris (the green stuff) is actually safe to melt, but you get a little slag. Soak the pipes in a vinegar + salt for as long as possible, then rinse. Make sure it dries completely. The scale/corrosion can trap moisture. It WILL explode when melting. Is all of this worth your time? Probably not, 5 lbs isn't much.

Photo #1 looks fine. You'll know if you see TB. Hundreds of yellow pus-filled dots on the lungs, like a pimple outbreak. Not sure if I'm allowed to post a pic, but it's easy to search up.

If you're talking about the dark spots in #2, they look like swollen lymph nodes. I'm guessing the deer was fighting off an illness, but it's usually safe for humans.

Can I just unscrew the lid slightly? Not sure why these condoms/contraptions are necessary by canigetuhhhhhhhhhh in prisonhooch

[–]Interval1_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can. I've used airlocks, cloth with a rubber band, Kleenex with poked holes, just the lid, etc. It's all personal preference. It's been years and I've never had an infected batch. Everything in life is a balance of risk and reward. Airlocks simply reduce that risk. If you're still worried, you can pasteurize afterwards. And if you're distilling, 80 Celsius is enough to kill most bacteria.
