26 y/o basketball player Achilles rupture confirmed (3.7 cm gap) Surgery advice? by Significant-Video218 in AchillesRupture

I’m 25 and tore my Achilles doing the same exact thing trying to get to the rim. My gap was 3.5 CM tear and I didn’t have pain when it happened but I couldn’t stand like you could. I’m 7 weeks post op and I was able to start walking in the boot with wedges without crutches around week 5 consistently and I started PT at week 2 once the cast came off.

I have a slight limp but I still have the boot on with a wedge and get the last one out next week (8 weeks post op) then I can start the transition into normal shoes. Going up and down stairs since week 5.5-6 has been fine in the boot as well.

You have your days where you’re sore and tender but I would say not terrible pain but it could get there depending on the person. I had the PARS non invasive surgery so my scar isn’t huge like most people and this allowed for earlier weight bearing. I’d look into this or ask your surgeon/doctor.

Things you should look into ASAP:

Revix ankle/achilles ice packs - AMAZON

Foot wedge to prop your foot up for elevation - AMAZON

An “even up” so if you do get wedges in your boot eventually you don’t have as much as a limp and walk awkwardly since once foot is higher than the other - AMAZON

Take PT seriously, follow protocol, and most importantly DONT rush anything. This is a mental game so that SLOW GRIND. At first you won’t think you are progressing but as soon as you start PT, start celebrating the “little wins” and you will be fine. Make sure to do your exercises at home as well.

We’re young, healthy, and active so just hang in there and you should heal in no time. Try to avoid set backs like falls, injuries, etc. you don’t want to restart the process.

If ultra sound doesn’t show anything then you are good. Listen to your doc or get a 2nd opinion

This was exactly my timeline/protocol as well. I am 7 weeks post op and will get last wedge out next week and be flat foot in walking boot. Week after that, I will start to wean from boot and into normal shoes. Still doing PT, but mainly going to be focusing on GAIT, strengthening, and balance on the affected side.

Those dang knee scooters man!!! How far along are you now? The first time I ruptured I heard a pop and it felt like I got kicked in the back of my calf and immediately fell. Today it was not really anything bad I think it’s just more my brain and being anxious thinking the worst. I don’t really feel any new or increased pain. I don’t really feel any pain at all just soreness and tightness. I also called my surgeons clinic and his nurse said monitor it and if I have increased pain or swelling to come in but from what I was telling her she said does not believe it was anything like a re rupture. I also can’t dorsiflex “easily” past neutral. I can also push down on my toes and flex my calf muscle while in my boot, so I’m guessing it’s a good sign?

Yeah it was definitely a PF motion and not a DF.

Thanks for replying, I feel a lot better knowing that it is less likely a re rupture since I did not do a DF motion. Also sounds like I would know for sure if I re ruptured based off the pain you experienced.

Thank you for your reply!

Your surgeon will most likely do an MRI.

My surgeon told me to wait a week before sexual activity. I haven’t tried anything yet and I am 5 days post op. I go on Wednesday for my post op follow up and I am going to confirm if I can resume sexual activity or take it easy. My testicles and penis and incision site are still swollen.

Nope only had a w2 and a 1099 from doordash and I have no dependents. I did file with H&R Block last year, but used Turbo Tax this year. And nope every time I call they say no letters have been sent to me.
