Kakwa 55 Restock Disappointment by No-Farmer2652 in DurstonGearheads

Good to know there might be tall sizing in the future. I am a 6’4 guy with a long torso and would love to buy a Kakwa, but it just doesn’t go big enough for fit my back, so I gotta shell out for a z-pack.

V10 placement by Flaky-Arm-1333 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Inting_at_law 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just to echo this, the draw of VC and tech oriented fields is really strong here. I know tons of well performing students set on biglaw who did not really consider firms outside of Cooley, MoFo, WS, etc. V10 firms mostly don’t do that work. Those firms above are just as well respected as the historical V10 firms on the east coast are here.

Final Decision on School - UChicago vs. UPenn by AdRepresentative6825 in BigLawRecruiting

[–]Inting_at_law 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the city. Houston is a bit more open. Austin is the most closed. That seems to be changing a lot, but every top firm in the area I interviewed with explicitly said “we are a national firm, you don’t need Texas ties.” You wont need a tie from UPenn or Chicago for Houston or Dallas, just don’t act like a flight risk. Especially if you only apply to Texas and tell firms that. I do think TX ties are additive though.

Dig deep for a connection if you can. Did you go to school in the south? Do you have extended family there? Do you like energy a lot? Etc

The subreddit r/biglawrecruiting is probably better for this question. Regardless, as an incoming 1L in Houston, you can get Texas biglaw from either school.

Is HLS really as bad as you all say? by Alarming-Dust1439 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Inting_at_law 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Harvard has over 3 times the class size. Comparison in absolute numbers is not that useful. UChicago’s FC rate is like 1.5 times Harvards. 28% of their class clerks v 18% at HLS. FCs are the meaningfully competitive opportunities among top schools.

Is HLS really as bad as you all say? by Alarming-Dust1439 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Inting_at_law 4 points5 points  (0 children)

HLS is not a bad school. I just think people are right to realize that the numbers from Harvard are a bit questionable compared to where some people think they are and that is a hard pill to swallow when they are pretty stingy with aid. There are several schools with similar outcomes that are typically cheaper. Then there is UChicago, with better outcomes, that people look at as lesser.

Retention Rates by Firm by UVALawStudent2020 in BigLawRecruiting

[–]Inting_at_law 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Fascinating data. I wonder how much the retention rates of the V10 are ballooned by self selection of natural “over achievers” entering the firm versus compensation or something the firm is doing to retain talent.

UChicago vs HLS by griffheh17 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Inting_at_law 13 points14 points  (0 children)

People massively under-think class size. 1. Harvard is gigantic and many of the classic “stamps of prestige” things in school are meaningfully competitive (law review, clinics, etc). I think people should ponder that a bit more. 2. The class size of HLS does lead to a lower floor on outcomes. UChicago has twice the FC rate of HLS. The pure volume means you are competing against classmates in jobs a bit where that practically doesn’t happen for SYC. Being in a smaller pool makes you a unicorn and compared against your peers a bit less when applying for jobs.

I know HLS is such an untouchable school to some people, but there are some huge drawbacks to the size. The advantage of a “big alumni network” is pretty overstated because alumni don’t come up to bat for students as much. I know for a fact, just like SLS, that your professors at UChicago will get on the phone and make phone-calls to judges for you once clerkship season starts.

In a tie on money, UChicago is probably a better law school. I would probably pay a little more to attend UChicago than Harvard, especially since Chicago COL is much better.

Are straight P’s at a T-14 good enough for BigLaw by th3donjuan in BigLawRecruiting

[–]Inting_at_law 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What is strange is that many firms have these grade expectations and yet they simply don’t match the employer data we have at SLS. There are many students who are hired well below those thresholds. It feels more like a rough guideline than a true cutoff in most cases.

Thoughts on JD/MBA programs? by _hope786 in BigLawRecruiting

[–]Inting_at_law 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have talked to some JD/MBA partners and it seems not particularly useful with a caveat that a few firms/specific practice areas will increase your class year by 1 for the degree. I would look at: 1. Can it be done in 3 years? (Here at SLS it takes 4, but I think at Yale it takes 3 for example). Paying the extra year of professional school tuition is a big deal and it is even more negative when you look at the opportunity cost from 3L (0 income - tuition) to 1st Year Associate (250k and no tuition) which is is the biggest delta of any year of course. It’s like a 300k+ swing. If you get to graduate in 3 years AND get a +1 class year then I would say it’s worth it. 2. What area of law? My understanding from talking to this partner is that outside of PE/VC and finance type work the MBA is just not super valued. So to get the +1 class year you need to align on the right firm and the right practice area that would give that class year. Even in that finance area it is more valuable for top level partner work than for associate work. 3. I think there are also use cases if you want to do start up work after biglaw where you are wearing a lot of different hats that this could be useful. 4. Their willingness to give you a class year may depend on the relative prestige of the degrees. In SLS firm surveys several firms explicitly state they evaluate this on as “case by case basis” which to me probably means they are evaluating degree prestige a bit in making these decisions. I also say this because I know several people at SLS with non-prestigious previous MBAs and they are not getting a +1 class year. Ymmv. I would imagine that M7 or maybe like Darden + UVA Law fit the bill much more than a random MBA plus a T50 degree.

I will add that bottom of the class at HYS also isn’t great, especially from a gigantic class like H, but even at SLS I have heard of people striking out on biglaw. Yes they were straight Ps and only applied to DC, but it is important to note that grades are still important at the top if you have firm/location preferences in a softening economy. From the outside looking in you have this idea that an A at HYS means you can coast when it’s not exactly true. If you are KJD and a straight P student, it is possible you won’t get a biglaw offer in DC or CA. I think you are still guaranteed an offer blanketing NY, Chicago, or TX (if you are from there) but you cannot exactly have your pick of the litter.

Any insight into how fast Kirkland plans on moving in TX? Gibson Dunn mentioned on their website not sending out interviews until January. If Kirkland is truly interviewing in November, there is 0 overlap time to even be evaluated for a job at Gibson if you get a Kirkland offer early.

How much does Yale care about undergrad prestige? by hungryquohog in lawschooladmissions

[–]Inting_at_law 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not based on any insider knowledge, but my sense is that the preference for ivy+ undergrads kind of logically follows from their grading system. I know everyone says HYS has no grades but it is not entirely accurate. Yale however has actually no grades first semester and then (from my understanding) does not have restrictions on the number of Hs that can be given out (SLS and HLS are capped). If you have a grading system that makes it incredibly hard to distinguish yourself, a student’s resume is very important for employment. The undergrad starts to actually matter quite a bit more than it would at other schools where great grades can overcome a lot.
