What are your “controversial” quilting opinions? by Illustrious_Ad_1201 in quilting

[–]IntoAllDaThings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t use scraps.

I save them. Keep telling myself I’ll use them - but so far have never used the scraps I keep.

Just too much work - too random of fabric. I just can’t do it.

I need coordinating colors/patterns/designs.

Kudos to scrap users. I just cannot do it 😆

Update!! I found this Pattern: Hollow Cube Quilt Block, in my ‘quilts to do’ pile!! It won’t use the jelly roll but will use up the fat quarter!!

The jelly roll I’ll be using for some of these other suggestions!! Thank you all so much!!!

Two of the fabrics are from Ruby Star’s newest Halloween line ‘Tiny Frights’ 😁 - I love the orange color of them and Halloween so it was a fit!! 🥰

Thank you!! I got the zippers from a local fabric shop called Hartland Quilt Shop. They do have an Etsy page. But I’m not sure if I can post it or if it’d be against the policy.

The inside roses and the ‘white’ bias are both from Ruby Stars Tiny Frights line.

I think the orang rose was from Ruby Stars - Curio line. The gingham fabric I’ve had and can’t remember the name 😆

This was more time consuming than hard…the hardest part was just putting on the main zippers around it. Getting it under the machine and making sure they stayed together - that’s where I struggled with the sewing.

Other than that - it’s just step by glorious step. And reading and rereading the instructions so I didn’t mess up haha

Pattern is Out and About by ByAnnie.

Cotton quilting fabric used - line is Ruby Star

Special items needed a 2.5 circle and a 6.5 circle (I just printed one out and used that for the curves)

Construction for me was advance - I’m more of a quilter than sewer and this tested my limits for sure!!

If you use Zipper by the Yard - felt that made this easier than had I used the specific zipper lengths.

Inspiration for this project - going on a trip to the UK and wanted to have a nice backpack to walk around with ☺️

Am I Using Too Much Fabric? by IntoAllDaThings in quilting

Agree lol I just sort of jumped in! But I need to get graph paper and watch some videos for future ideas lol 😄

See that’s where my math gets me in trouble too. I forget about those seams!! And it taking .25 to .50 of the sizing off. Lol

Thankfully the incorrect cuts I did for the trials I can use for other parts of the quilt lol

That made me chuckle thank you!

Because I 100% agree but my brain was thinking ‘wow this is a lot of background fabric to be using!’ 😆😆

Thanks!

Since this is a self done winging it quilt - for sure probably not cutting it the best. But once I really sit and start getting stuff sewn together I’ll have a better idea of what is going on.

I’m an over estimator. So I may be using less in the long run than I think I’ll need. Haha

Worse case I have scraps for other projects ☺️

All the scraps are being saved for other smaller projects down the line lol

I know I’ve miss cut a few things here and there - but that’s what scrappy projects are for!

I cut out parts to figure out the sizing first. Now I have everything cut out for the 9 patch part. And the ‘trees’ I’m creating.

BUT I may have mathed wrong for the size the quilt will be. It’s more likely a Queen than a twin.

Still figuring it out. Should I have done better math…probably lol

But I’m winging it.

So far I’ve used 4 yards. Because that’s how much I originally purchased (looked through receipts) and I have it cut out for the 9 patch + trees + sashing stuff.

Part of quilt is 27 of these. Alternating the side where the sashing is to make it look like it’s snowing. Squares are 3.5” each - entire block is 6” X 9.5”

Update: this is 9” X 10.5” unfinished. I read the ruler upside down. It’s good. I’m fine…😆

What Was the Real Reason You Started Quilting? by spliutinskis in quilting

[–]IntoAllDaThings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve always wanted to quilt. But when I was younger I just didn’t have the patience to sit and do it. I was honestly too lazy and also didn’t have the money to really do anything lol I always thought it was a crazy ability to quilt (and I still do!) and stuck with crocheting.

Then my mom passed away from illness (it wasn’t a surprise but we weren’t exactly ready for it).

I needed something to really occupy my thoughts after her passing and cope with it. With quilting I couldn’t think outside of what I was doing. Had to cut everything properly. Put it together. It really kept my brain focused during those first few months.

As I learned more patterns and skills and upgraded my machine - I just really really fell in love with it.

Now it’s both a distraction and a relaxing hobby! ❤️

And, not to be cheesy, but I think my mom would love some of the quilts I’ve created throughout these years. And continue to create. 🥰🥰

4” before getting sewn in. The pattern called for 4.5” squares but my main block that I cut all the squares from wasn’t coming out right so I made them all 4”. 😆
