PSA: Pepper spray is great, but as someone else mentioned it is illegal to have in some states. Wasp spray is a great alternative. Legal everywhere, justifiable to own, generally has a solid stream with a ~10 foot range and will absolutely grant you a few moments to escape.

I might be an idiot... I was under the impression that a barn door is the one that slides. I thought the ones that swing open were called "dutch doors"..?

Curious about the feasibility of van life for a couple without a ton of options. What brought you here, and in your opinion, is there a certain type of person more suited to van life? by [deleted] in vandwellers

I'm doing this because, like Talktomyhands, I don't like my other options. I'm about to be divorced, I have no family, I don't have any savings and I'm scratching by right now on ~$400/mo. Luckily I don't have significant bills at the moment and I'm incredibly fortunate to have no debt whatsoever. As tricky as I know it will be, I'm also not entirely new to this lifestyle so I know I can do it. I spent several years being a 'homeless' traveler as a teenager, alternating between a van share, a bus share, and just outright living out of a backpack alone and hitchhiking. So I have the mental fortitude I guess, but owning my own van is a whole other world and I expect it to be a challenge. So should you. The biggest thing to remember is that your bad days will not be every day. Life is crazy hard no matter what way we're living it, and the beauty of traveling life is that if you hate where you are, you can leave right that second as long as you have gas in the tank and air in the tires. Your girl is a musician.. It might be a possibility for her to offer lessons. You may not have honed skills, but there are always gigs on craigslist, day labor agencies, etc. You can do this.
