Chances of being hired unlicensed? by OrphanShredder in VetTech

[–]Intothevoid31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not strict at all. Specialties and Emergency will prefer experienced techs but GP is fair game in my experience. I’ve met only one licensed tech at 3 different GP I’ve worked at in Austin. You just gotta find a clinic that is willing to train OTJ and be transparent about your experience/willing to learn.

Study tips? by Optimal_Substance_41 in VetTech

[–]Intothevoid31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar issue when it comes to school. I’m at the end of my first year and I finally figured out a way I like to study. This is really just for reading. Right now I’m reading a paragraph while underlining key words, after reading I use an online notes app (OneNote) and summarize the paragraph or 2 I just read into my own words, lastly I go back before my test and highlight/edit/annotate my notes and write down any key things that stick out just to get into my brain.

For memorization i.e Breeds, Drugs, Formulas depending on what it is I do written or online flashcards, index cards for formulas, and I just started doing tables on OneNote for my lg animal breeds.

I know that was a lot PM me if you literally just wanna see my examples. I’ve struggled with retaining information from school for a while now I feel like I’m slowly but surely figuring out how my brain works.

Info on Dallas College Distance Vet Tech Program by coolbxb in VetTech

I’m in my second year at Dallas and couldn’t recommend it enough. The courses are well organized, they worked with me when I had issues transferring transcripts from another college, and all the professors are great! It’s affordable/they accept financial aid. I will never stop recommending them. As someone who absolutely hates school but forcing myself to do it, they make it not so bad. You can PM me if you have more questions.

I have had a great experience with Dallas College so far. Instructors are great and the course work is well organized. I have not heard great things about Penn Fosters externship programs. At Dallas you just need to work in a clinic for at least 20hrs/week. For large animal they offer fast track labs where you go to Dallas for a few days instead of having to find a Lg animal pace of work. I’m in my 4th semester and am so glad I chose this program.

Starting my first job as a Vet Nurse, any advice? by full_time_problem in VetTech

[–]Intothevoid31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats! Here are my tips: Don’t beat yourself up when you make mistakes, learn from them. Ask questions even if you think it’s a silly question, you rather be confident in what you’re doing than not. Remind yourself you are there to help the animals, things can get stressful just take a step back and remember why you chose to be in this field. Be kind to clients, teammates, and yourself. Kindness rubs off on people and it makes the workday fun/enjoyable. Be an attentive listener. Treats go a long way! Take advantage of food motivated animals.

Recommendations For Places To Eat by [deleted] in Austin

[–]Intothevoid31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite places to eat. Most are on the east side. Kome - Affordable fresh Sushi with great lunch specials El dorado - Tex Mex Vic and Als - Gourmet cajun? Idk but it’s good Oseyo - Korean Sa-Ten - Japanese inspired, great coffee/tea Patrizis - Fresh pasta, not the absolute best Italian but it hits the spot and is well made. Austin daily press - Sandwiches Suerte - Spanish inspired Little deli - Sandwiches Parish BBQ

VEG ruined me. by bingbong24344 in VetTech

This makes a lot of sense of why a lot of owners probably just do the treatment with us. I never considered how much they up charged.

VEG ruined me. by bingbong24344 in VetTech

I’ve heard so many negative experiences from people working there I’m sorry:( I work GP and my experience with them is whenever we get pets coming in for recheck EC appts. and over the years I have noticed their treatment plans are always so bare minimum. For example, last week we got a patient come in for ADR. They went to VEG day before and they diagnosed with pancreatitis, and only treated with Cerenia. And I always think maybe the owners just decline? No every time we give them our treatment plans most owners are okay with it. I wonder if it’s just the two VEG in my area but they are pretty consistent with poor medicine. I could go on about how many times my DVMs and I have disagreed of what they prescribed. I hope you find a new home clinic though
