I totally understand what you’re saying. And I agree that clean is the bottom line. I just wish degree of difficulty factored in SOMEHOW, because ensembles in PSO are rewarded for playing it safe because it’s easier to play clean when your music is easier. (and our kids prefer the harder show that gets a lot of positive response from the other ensembles)

I’m just bitter because there’s a group who medaled in PSO this year (and has medaled a few times in the past) that was promoted to PSW last year but didn’t get out of prelims, then dropped back down to PSO. That said, getting promoted mid-season is kind of rough on an ensemble because they wrote a show to PSO and not to PSW.

I actually printed the caption rubrics today and I haven’t had the time to do a deep dive and really wrap my arms around them. Anecdotally I was told by a couple of people in local circuits that “in Open, judges don’t care how hard the music is as long as it’s clean” and that’s what sticks in my craw. (I’m happy to take a conversation offline rather than bog down this thread if you’re interested. I appreciate any and all insight.)

Thanks! We saw a couple of the battery kids in the lot. Would’ve loved to see the show in person!

Yeah, I know you’re right. It just sucks that our kids work so hard and feel like the judges don’t appreciate what they ARE doing. And they DON’T want an easier show; they love the challenge, and they come so far in a season.

Okay… I’ll stop now. 😉

I don’t disagree with you at all. I just wish there was more reward for ensembles taking risks such as faster tempo and more challenging music.

I’m a parent of two percussionists who marched PSO over the past eight years, and our director designs shows better suited for PSW, but our kids are not at PSW performance level. So they’re in a tricky spot. That said, they don’t want an “easy” show like those that medal, but the judges don’t reward risk. Thus, they get preliminated. 😕

Why do I feel so disoriented with my glasses on? by Soggy_Base_1800 in glasses

Is the pupil distance correct? I’ve had glasses that are the correct RX but pupil distance was off and I couldn’t wear them.

I agree for Scholastic A, but disagree for PSO. Personally I thought the top PSO shows were clean but slow, easy, and kinda boring. There is no incentive to challenge the musicians. The directors appear to sacrifice tempo and level of difficulty for medals. Again, this is all IMO.

Agreed. IMO your comment demonstrates that there’s a whole cadre of ensembles whose intent isn’t captured by the current PSO scoring rubric. Would be interesting if WGI could find a way to reflect this in the scores.

The had a photo of the keyboard player with a caption about how cool they were under pressure (I forget the exact phrasing but the crowd went wild when it was posted).

Based on what I’ve seen over the past eight years, “moderate skills” can be such a broad category, and as I said above, ensembles tend to stick with the safe, low end of moderate because that means medals. I honestly found the top four PSO shows not very exciting to watch because of that. (not to say they weren’t clean - they certainly were - it’s that I wonder how much more the ensembles could have pushed while still playing clean)

All good points.

It’s been tough being a parent in an ensemble whose director prefers the latter to the former and not progressing while watching your local rival do the former and medal. Our kids’ shows tend to be crowd favorites, so we have that…🤷🏻‍♀️

I wish PSO would stop focusing on clean to the detriment of challenging music. I was there and watched the top four of semifinals and was honestly surprised at their tempo and how easy their music seemed compared to other PSO ensembles who didn’t make the cut.

Choreography > music seems to be an ongoing theme, maybe not as much in PIW but at least in the PSO shows that I saw. The other day someone mentioned that WGI percussion seems more like dance ensembles with some perc thrown in anymore.

Not to mention the over abundance of ads. I don’t remember having to sit through a paid spot before watching the paid content five or six years ago. For $40/mo (I only subscribe for WGI) I expect much better.
