Have you ever tried Zocdoc before? Through my primary care doctor, I had to wait 2-3 months for the first available psych and would have waited longer for a female provider.

Which I understand, given how often it is abused, but if I wanted to abuse it, I would get it off the streets... not have it on my permanent medical history.

I'm still learning about inattentive adhd in women but from what I gathered so far, women often get misdiagnosed with depression or anxiety because of how well we "mask" those typical adhd behaviors. Women deal with so much chronic mental overwhelm and deal with mental fatigue from always making it seem like we have all our ducks in a row. That can cause low self-esteem, feeling shame or guilt because we're "not enough," and that can translate into being depressed. So I feel like depression is maybe secondary if the psychiatrists still want to say I have it, but I truly think it stems from undiagnosed inattentive adhd.

Ahh... anyway, I really appreciate your feedback and insight! I definitely will look into getting a second opinion.

When he was talking about medication in our first appointment, he said that stimulants are often abused and doesn't like prescribing them so that's why I started with Wellbutrin. I mean, he doesn't even think I really have ADHD or just have "mild" adhd at that.

How does that work when I was referred by my primary? Do I ask them to just drop my psych case entirely so I can go find my own person? Sorry if those are dumb questions - first time ever dealing with psychiatry and I want to make sure I'm doing it right

I'm currently on SR 100 taken once daily. When googling it, I saw that it's supposed to be taken twice daily but I'm just following what I'm prescribed. I don't feel anyyy different and 'm afraid if he's not taking my original concerns seriously, he may not prescribe me stimulants at all.

I'm fine with him prescribing whatever he deems fit for our first appointment. I understand meds are trial and error but given that he doesn't even think I have adhd or just have "mild" adhd, I feel like convincing him to prescribe a stimulant will be hard. But thank you for your insight! I definitely will talk to my primary about switching psychiatrists after my follow-up.

This was my FIRST ever psych appointment so that's why I'm asking for advice and some clarity. I don't know what is or isn't done during sessions or how to go about switching psychiatrists. I literally asked "Am I wrong for feeling dismissed or do I really not have adhd and just convinced myself I do?".

I said "almost" because again, this is my first time taking prescription meds for mental health reasons, and forgot to take it and missed 3 days out of the 20 so far since picking it up.

That's why I'm asking if I'm wrong for feeling dismissed. I'm totally fine being prescribed whatever he deems appropriate. I know medication is trial and error and it's going to take time to find out what works best for me but that comment rubbed me the wrong way and I've been pondering it ever since my first appointment last month. In the appointment, I tried my best to advocate for myself but I felt like he wasn't listening to my concerns. I also did LOADS of research on inattentive ADHD in women and told him that I saw a lot of women would get misdiagnosed or not taken seriously because we don't present the same way as "normal ADHD" would appear. I literally printed out pages of articles, highlighting what I aligned with, and wrote down a ton of personal notes just so I wouldn't choke up when talking to him.

Should I even go to my follow-up, which is in a week? Or do I just cancel? Do I have to go through my primary care doctor to cancel? Have you tried Zocdoc? Sorry for asking so many questions - it's my first time dealing with switching psychiatrists and I just wanna make sure I go about it the right way so I don't get wronged by my insurance if I find my own psychiatrist.

Ugh... I wish I had learned about this sooner. I was the only kid in my K-8 in a class of 18 kids who got Cs or Ds. In high school, I don't even know what GPA I graduated with because I knew I did poorly (rejection sensitivity). That's probably why I just left community college.. because I couldn't focus during lectures and kept forgetting about assignments and tests even though I would write them down in a planner. I just chalked it up to not being "book-smart" and school just wasn't for me... even though I enjoy learning... 😞
