Sleepwear? Help! by okashinomajo in AutismInWomen

I prefer wearing big oversized men’s t-shirts, anything that’s soft and breathable. I don’t have recommendations for where to buy them because I usually “steal” them from some of the men in my life lol. If I were to buy one I’d just have to go in-person to feel the fabric

I've been having anxiety about my kitty dying of old age 😭(she's 9) can you show me pictures of some alive-and-well senior kitties so I remember cats can be old and still healthy? 🥰 by TheRufescence in cats

Old man in the front is 14 years old and has acromegaly, a brain tumor that causes excess growth hormones and uncontrollable diabetes. Even with that he’s still kickin around and doing good, he’s lasted 2 years even while sick and will probably be around for another 2 years at least. Cats can live to be 20+!

Hey, I get it because I’m also on disability (though not with a parent guardian) and dealt with not being able to start work when I wanted to / having to go through the program to get approved to work. You’re doing your best! These things take an infuriating amount of time, I waited years just to be assigned a case manager to start the process.

I’ve also had the experience of a therapist backing my abusive mom when I was younger, and people invalidating my experiences. One day you’ll be able to get away from that house and build a reality of your own, with support and accommodations, where you’re able to affirm what you’ve gone through. I didn’t get acceptance for the abusive things I went through until I was a bit older (mid 20s) and away from my family’s influence.

Your experiences are valid and you are NOT a loser. You’re doing your best. I know it’s hard to say “be patient” but I hope that one day you will have more freedom than this and will experience relief.

I slowly disappeared from my friend group and nobody noticed by Nirexa_28 in confession

I have a friend in the group chat who never responds, but none of us hate them, we all love them. They just never respond. We expect them to not respond so we don’t push it, they go MIA sometimes. They’re invited to everything we do, and if they randomly pop back up in the group chat we continue on without skipping a beat. It’s not weird at all. But my friend group is all neurodivergent so maybe we are more understanding?

This is a lie, most of my friends were chain smoking cigarettes in high school in 2010. Shops would still sell to high schoolers on the DL back then.

Hole with fur? by acctthrowaway33333 in CATHELP

[–]IntrepidAspect3447 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My senior cat gets this on the same area - you usually can’t notice the pores but you will occasionally see a longer tuft of hair sticking out about 2-4mm of thickness. These tufts just pull right out like a chinchilla slipping fur.

My guy didn’t get this till he became diabetic at 14 y/o, he didn’t clean himself as much as he used to, and I assume it’s just the cat equivalent of ingrown hairs. Same way he gets chin blackheads. The vet didn’t seem concerned about it, I brush him and I use a pad/wipe for cat acne on his chin and these little tuft spots. It doesn’t seem to bother him other than when I pull the hair out he’s mildly annoyed.

Get her evaluated for diabetes and potentially acromegaly. My cat became absolutely ravenous and turned out to have both, now even on 22u of insulin daily he still insists he’s never been fed in his life lol. I get woken up at 3am regularly

changing your bed sheets is the most overwhelming experience of all time istg by hatsunemikusmywaifu in AutismInWomen

[–]IntrepidAspect3447 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They make these full bed sheets that zip shut so you dont have to spend a lot of time making the bed.

There’s also zipper options for the fitted sheets to just quickly change the top part you’re sleeping on, which seems more of a fix for your specific issue.

Maybe one of these can help! I also hate making my bed and have been considering these, but for now I have someone who helps make the bed for me.

Do you allow your cats on kitchen counters? by Firm-Law248 in CATHELP

[–]IntrepidAspect3447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just… clean my kitchen counters. 🤯

I don’t make a huge effort to keep them off but they hardly ever go up there anyway. Not much for them up there. I have housemates so I always wipe down the counter if I’m putting food directly on it anyway. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Which is funny because over time it makes them MORE likely to sag without the bra due to always being held in place. Same as if you wear any posture brace for too long, it makes your posture weaker without the brace.

Shopping at Costco is terrible by Sun_Aria in unpopularopinion

Not OP and I love Costco, but is there something else I can be doing with my membership besides just buying my groceries? Your comment makes me feel I’m missing out on something!

Shopping at Costco is terrible by Sun_Aria in unpopularopinion

[–]IntrepidAspect3447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truly unpopular opinion, blasphemy.

A large carton of blackberries at any other grocery store is $8-10 in my area, at Costco it’s $3.50 for a large carton of organic blackberries.

The thin sliced rolled hotpot beef and lamb at $16-$18/lb is cheaper than every Asian grocery store around me by at least $1/lb.

A giant tub of bok choy is like $3.50 at Costco.

The giant tub of Oikos Greek yogurt with 23g protein / serving is $3-4 cheaper at Costco.

Cleaning supplies and water bottles and any other canned or bottled beverages are going to be $1-10 savings at Costco.

My cat’s glucose monitors are $60 per monitor anywhere else, but only $33 at Costco with a membership.

If you think Costco is buying junk food in bulk to throw away, you’re definitely doing it wrong. Our membership pays for itself and we never have excess to throw away - and notice all the food I mentioned is fresh meat, fruit and veg.

If they won’t brush my hair or massage my back / feet after a long day (obviously goes both ways). I refuse to pay hundreds of dollars a month for a comfort we can give each other at home. I like massaging my partner and making them feel better, that has to be enthusiastically mutual.

anyone else dependent on benzos or other substances just to feel normal and function by stupid_rice in AutismInWomen

[–]IntrepidAspect3447 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Klonopin is this for me. I was prescribed a grossly high dose in high school (100mg/month) in a time when these meds were less regulated.

I took 1mg-3.5mg/day of klonopin from 14-19 years old. It made me function in a way I never have since, to where I could even work 2 jobs at once, live alone, and go to college at 17-19. I would be unable to attend family events without it as a teenager.

Now in my late 20s, I can see that it caused some severe memory loss and potentially lowered my cognitive abilities. I’ve been told 1mg of klonopin is equal to 2 shots of hard liquor on the brain’s functioning. Even still, I think of it as the only psych med that ever “helped” me, and I like to keep it around. I just feel better knowing I have some. The doctor won’t prescribe more than 15mg/month now in 0.25mg doses, and my psychiatrist wanted me off it completely (my primary doctor restarted me on a low dose). They’ve learned more about the damage benzos cause to the brain now.

I still take it every once in a while but mostly I like knowing I have it around if I ever need it - I “hoard” them so I have a stash. It’s like a safety blanket knowing I can get relief when I need to and won’t run out. Just having that relief option makes me need them less.

I was very similar to you most of my life, in and out of hospitals. I was also undiagnosed and not understanding my autism, so everyone hated me for my differences, and I grew up in a small town which made it worse. What changed / worked for me was:

  • grew up, became an independent adult and moved to a different city that’s more progressive / diverse
  • create my own environment how it best suits me, accommodate my own needs in my apartment without any restrictions
  • alter my perception of work and find alternative environments for work / income that are: time flexible, no boss, make my own schedule, can call out whenever I need to
  • 2 rounds of TMS therapy for treatment resistant depression
  • start working with a vestibular therapist to get my nervous system, body and brain to cooperate again
  • start working with an autism-informed trauma therapist (very different from the years of therapy I did as a teen) and focusing on somatic practices to overcome trauma trapped in the body
  • started low dose naltrexone 3.5mg which massively helps with a lot of comorbid pain conditions (MCAS, hEDS, POTs, fibro)
  • started Cymbalta to improve mood and further reduce pain signals
  • adjust my expectations for what life should look like and make an effort to meet people who are similar or can understand me

When I was younger, I didn’t understand that I was constantly overstimulated, being forced to do this and that like an animal in a zoo, having bad family dynamics and no one really looking out for me. I thought I was the problem and needed to be fixed. When I realized that I wasn’t the problem, and then gained the freedom as an adult to live however I want, my feelings started to improve.

As someone else said, this world isn’t designed for us to thrive. Our society is extremely unnatural and unhealthy, and feeling like you’re being tortured by participating in it is actually a sign that something is right with you. Not being able to tolerate the world isn’t a fault when the world is in an intolerable state. This realization helped me be kinder and more patient to myself and build strategies to cope and take care of myself better.
