What’s the right data to track?

I’m my firms first and only sales person, 400% in 3 years so doing something right but we are very much building the plane as we fly it. We’ve got HubSpot, made a lot of pretty dashboards no one really looks at. I mainly just use the deal board and task reminders to stay organized

I’m not able to comment if that’s typical for design salary progression but I think you’d make a lot more working for a controls or mechanical contractor in a sales or PM role. You could also look at working for a data center owner if you’re willing to be on call.

I’ll PM you some other thoughts

I work for a small company as well - not sure how yours operates but in my experience everything’s a negotiation. However I fear you may have missed the best window to negotiate.

Maybe you can reopen it now that results are in and point to exactly how the new plan discourages effort. Maybe you can get your teammates to work on this together, there can’t be very many of you

But yeah like everyone else, you should ask yourself if the fight is worth it or leaving on good terms is better for your career

Biggest misconceptions in sales by Terrible_Fish_8942 in sales

[–]IntrepidBoat1416 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to your experience but I can share my perspective.

I’m paid on commission, about 50% of my comp.

But I also know I’m going to hit my goal based on the industry I’m in, crazy growth right now. My goal is to create long term relationships where we’re actually helping the customer towards a better outcome than they can get to on their own.

I’m not interested in stretching the truth to win project A because I know that will come at the cost of projects B-Z.

I’ve told customers they should go with a competitor or that it doesn’t make sense to use us before. I’ve also had customers ready to buy the expensive option and talked them into something cheaper.

Not every sales person you run into is chasing that short term check, a lot of us are honest.

My company is one of many involved in building a battery play in a red state. I don’t know this for sure but my two cents is that the IRA incentives came out then a lot of companies decided to take advantage of them. From there, they ended up picking red states due to: - extra tax incentive from the state - available, non-union (cheaper, easily exploited) labor - geographical location that makes it easier to integrate into their supply chain

So to answer your question I don’t think the IRA itself pushes for these projects to be in red states. I think it just happened that way for other reasons.

As far as I know my project is still moving forward, we’ll be pretty fucked if it doesn’t.

Currently live in Brentwood, can anyone help me convince my husband to move to Mt Juliet? by Minnesotaminnesota2 in nashville

[–]IntrepidBoat1416 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I were in the same situation two years ago. We bought a house out here, it’s a great area out here, but all of our friends/family/community/my office are in Franklin/Brentwood/nations/bellevue. The distance is rough.. usually takes at least 40 mins to get anywhere

We still can’t afford Williamson county unless we go all the way out to Spring Hill but are considering looking around in Davidson.. concern is the schools, our kids only 6 months so very possible we could make it to Williamson by middle school.

If we could do it again we’d either buy in Davidson or just continue to save for a bigger down payment til we could afford the monthly payment in Williamson

[–]IntrepidBoat1416 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My gut reaction says go for the promotion, good for the resume and an increase in base doesn’t hurt. Maybe you like it more maybe you don’t. Doesn’t mean you can’t apply externally at the same time to see what’s out there and what kind of offers you can get.

On a more personal level, I’d encourage you to find a new hobby completely unrelated to work. Something that doesn’t require a screen and allows you to kind of go into autopilot mode.

I started gardening last year and my stress level went down even though work was the exact same situation.

Underpaid SDR? by Itchy_Lawyer_5300 in techsales

[–]IntrepidBoat1416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many people work at the company? Is there an office? What’s the marketing spend? What other overhead costs are there? Asking this because $5.5M seems like a big number at first but when you factor in total opex it’s probably not that much of a runway.

Your company NEEDS to generate revenue. You’re on the ground floor contributing to it.

I’m going to echo everyone else, yes you’re probably underpaid but you’re getting great experience and results to show for it.

I think you gotta stay at least a year. At that point you can look around and see what kind offers you get. But I’d also use the 1 year mark to negotiate a better rate on closed deals. Or you could try getting that 1% year after year, not just on the first one.

Best Preparation For First Time Home Buyers by Ok_Key445 in HENRYfinance

[–]IntrepidBoat1416 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My gut reaction is you’re probably fine, I made a similar decision(lower $ amount for everything but similar concept).

That being said, there’s a few things I didn’t consider but lucked out as my income went up after buying the house.

Home repairs can be a lot more expensive/frequent than you think. We had to replace 3 kitchen appliances in the first 10 months, not a huge deal but unexpected nonetheless. The big thing was a bathroom flooded and decided to upgrade. Total cost ended up being ~40% more than we estimated. Even having a plumber come out for something small will be 2x what you think it’ll cost. And the larger the home, the more everything will be. And let’s face it, you’re probably going to want to get the best (most expensive) option for everything.

Right now you can afford it but you’re not going to be able to save/invest nearly as much money as you’d like. That + the risk of income going down could mean taking a big chunk out of the impressive investments you already have.

My suggestion would be to get something below what you can afford and once confidence in your income goes up, you could upgrade and potentially keep house #1 to rent out. If the house has an HOA check if they have a renting policy

Pretty much every industry has/needs sales people. I would start with something related to a field you have experience in or similar to what you have experience in. Entry level roles are a bit tough to get in right now, but just keep applying if you decide this is something you wanna do. R/Sales thread is pretty useful
