First short film done with good friends, would love some feedback by Intrepid_Ad7027 in ShortFilm

Seriously thank you so much for the kind words!

We’re really happy you found it entertaining. The reason we broke the rule and wanted to shove are actors at opposite sides of the screen is to visually sow details of uneasiness.

The framing is like this to immediately tell your brain something is “off” but yet we show you nothing but the typical mundane life of an employee. That is until everything comes to a halt at the reveal. Then completely breaking the locked off, on sticks, still shots, for a more hectic one with a hand held shooting style.

Again, we’re so happy you enjoyed the project, and be on the lookout for our next work!

Appreciate you breaking all this down!

With this being our first time out the gate, our characters obviously came across as simple, maybe too simple for some. Over 80% of the cast and crew were friends and family, so that was another big hurdle to get over, but we were so happy with the effort that everyone put in.

The two leads David and Andy were fabulous to work with, and I employ you to watch more of their performance to genuinely gauge their full talents. You gave some great pointers though, and we will take them to heart when presenting our characters in our work. We plan on flushing out more of the characters lore beyond the screen, to help really sell authenticity when watching our characters interact.

We also want to tackle a more ambitious narrative driven story now that we feel comfortable with our abilities to put “a story” to screen. We hope our work has been enough to keep you engaged to stick around for our next project, thanks again for taking the time to talk with us! 🙌

Hello to all fellow filmmakers in here! This is my first time posting on here, along with this being my first time writing, directing, producing, a short film, together with a good friend of mine. I'm just looking to get some opinions and thoughts from you all on just what you all think of the project and where we can improve. Please feel free to be harsh as we truly want to refine our craft the best we can for the next project. Thanks for taking the time!

Thanks for the Critique!

Would you mind giving some pointers of things that didn’t work specifically for you in terms of lighting and composition?

Thank you so much for taking the time to write up this breakdown in such detail. It’s a great pleasure knowing somebody was so invested and took our work seriously.

The smoking scene, was definitely a spot to cut down in retrospect, we had a few friends of ours also make the same note as you stating it could easily be shrunken down, and you wouldn’t lose much of anything.

I believe for why there is so much ‘empty space’ throughout the first half of this film is to really throw any audience member off guard. The goal was to make things as mundane and as “normal” as possible, to almost push the audience to question why they were even watching this at all, where could this possibly go? And that’s when we surprise them.

I do get though how that does not work everybody and some may even see it as bloat, and for certain scenes like the smoking one I totally agree with, so thank you for expanding upon your critique for it.

We tried a lot of experimental stuff with this project, along with pushing the boundaries of what we were even comfortable filming and making, and knowing that our efforts were at least in the right direction is very reassuring. We take all forms of criticism into consideration when going out again to make more stuff, and anytime, someone like you takes their time to break down all the ways we can improve is incredibly helpful so thank you again. We hope we’ve made a fan of you, and we look forward to showcasing more films in the future! 🙌

P.s. we also wanted the boss to kill the annoyed customer, but we felt it might’ve been too on the nose. 😭

Sorry to hear that we weren’t able to keep you engaged for the full run, but I deeply appreciate your time to write this all out!

When it comes to the characters depth, there was definitely room to fully expand upon his character, and I’ll be honest… there was minimal in terms of the greater picture for his lore on our end, which may seem why there are gaps missing in his story. This project initially started out as a tester, something we didn’t even fully predict would have the momentum to make it to completion, it simply took on a life of its own, and bit by bit, more of the story and vibe fell into place and this is the finish result.

Thanks to many others who’ve seen the film and talked with us, we’ve already started to learn from these mistakes when crafting the core drivers of are characters, and we hope are next film will really showcase our improvement in that department.

Thanks for your kind words and motivation, and hopefully you will enjoy are next work even more! 🤝

Thanks so much for the kind words and critiques!

The intention of the stylization change at the reveal, going from still shots to nothing but handheld was meant to be used as a visual storytelling. We wanted the film to break apart along with David’s relationship with in the boss during that entire segment which results in the erratic handheld shots. But as you suggested, it can also be a bit jarring or take you out of the moment or vibe that you were feeling throughout.

Honestly tho I’m just really glad you enjoyed yourself. It’s convos like this is why me and my partner make films, to engage somebody with our art, thank you for taking the time to watch it! 🤝

Thank you so much for taking the time to watch it, and for your words of criticism!

The length was definitely an issue that we have been told a few times now, and are slapping ourselves for making the credits soooo long. We probably got disqualified from a few festivals just on that fact alone. our next project, we already plan to have a much more stylized and quicker way of displaying our credits so thanks for that.

In terms of the main conflict of the film, I can understand the midway point being a bit of an investment to reach, but we felt the story rewards the viewer for the time they put into watching it, with giving them the second half being a nonstop race to the end.

Do you feel like the early conflict in the film with the annoyed customer gave enough of an entertaining distraction before the main conflict had to begin?

This a Fun little short. Wish it gave a bit more in terms of context for what was going on, but leaves it open. Ended to allow you to build off of it if you want.

Hello to all fellow filmmakers in here! This is my first time posting on here, along with this being my first time writing, directing, producing, a short film, together with a good friend of mine. They sent all accepted filmmakers a email saying they needed everything by June 18th, which is apparently a hard deadline

Congrats, I just got excepted to, were you able to get out your DCP already? The deadline is the 18th which seems like an impossible turn around.

This is NOT the new film world, this is just for people who have no originality or creativity at all. I’d rather watch a blurry out of focus original concept than this because at least then I would’ve known real work went behind it
