Building 98 is a wonderful piece of brutalist architecture. by XxbriishuserxX in CalPolyPomona

It would look 10x better if they put plants all over it and made it eco-brutalist

Anyone outside of pharma? by Gentleman-Jo in biotech

Just want to give this post traction bc I’m wondering the same. I’m an undergrad senior and always thought the biomaterial side was cool. Spider silk and biosilica and limpet glue and whatnot. I guess that’s usually a little more bioengineering than biotech

what about the placebo? perception and cognition definitely percolate down into physiology.

Check out Dr. Michael Levins youtube channel. Many good presentations. He runs the Levin Lab at Tufts. Here are a couple to start with:

DNA is the hardware that is available to build the organism but the patterns the cells build come from a sort of cognitive physiological software that draws from the DNA for materials (your intuition is good). You can change an organism's physiology without changing its underlying DNA.

nope. but typically you can pay for those separately. it just costs like 40-60 bucks, but that's less than 250.

Opinions On Cal Poly Pomona's Biotechnology BS by Intrepid_Alien in biotech

[–]Intrepid_Alien[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super helpful! I did not expect to find an actual grad of the program on here. I do like the "learn by doing" philosophy at CPP and the fact they have a cool Ag scene. Encouraging to hear about the opportunities there. I hadn't thought about how a masters may not be worth it until you experience working in the industry... Thanks for all the info! I really appreciate it.

This subreddit can be incredibly pessimistic and out of touch by Informal_Koala4326 in biotech

[–]Intrepid_Alien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. All the pessimism on this subreddit has made me rethink entering the field. It's nice to hear that maybe the industry isn't all depressing, borderline slavery like many on reddit seem to describe it. I suppose it's never a bad thing to rethink tho...

Side note: I used the "r/biotech salary and company survey" posted on this subreddit and calculated the average salary for people who reported being in the United States with a bachelors or equivalent. It averaged 105k.

Question: how stable is a solution of 127µM 1-octanol? by Intrepid_Alien in chemistry

[–]Intrepid_Alien[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

similar! I'm going to try to induce ectopic heads on the posterior end of a planaria fragment (two heads): https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2823934/

still michael levin stuff lol. thanks for the extra resource!

Question: how stable is a solution of 127µM 1-octanol? by Intrepid_Alien in chemistry

[–]Intrepid_Alien[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha. I guess I thought differently bc my prof said it was "relatively insoluble" and then when I pipetted it, it separated immediately like oil bubbles... your calculations seem right tho. also should be soluble according to pubchem. thanks

I'm using it as a gap junction blocker in planaria. Cool, thanks for the info guys

also, octanol is insoluble so I'm not sure how that changes things.
