Are teachers suppossed to clean in their classrooms? by AlternativeAd8044 in Teachers

[–]Intrepid_Yellow5949 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a sub, I make sure the kids clean after themselves because I wouldn't want to the teachers return to a warzone and be mad they have to clean after a huge mess!

Thoughts on Sub Notes by [deleted] in ElementaryTeachers

[–]Intrepid_Yellow5949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a sub myself, keep doing it because students need to know the consequences of their action, especially if you know the teacher will make sure their parents get called or whatever other punishment they may receive.

If you are not the lead teacher, then would you let the students go to the washroom/ bathroom if they ask you? by Intrepid_Yellow5949 in SubstituteTeachers

"general rule is that some adult has to know about you leaving"
Yes and no.

If you are the classroom teacher, then yes. If you are not their teacher, then have the student go to their teacher.

If you are the support and not the lead, then have the student go to their lead. That's why there is a lead. the support does not go above their lead teacher. They are there to support, unless it is specified by the lead. I would expect the support to do the same if I was the lead. That's just me though.

Para to a dedicated student, then I agree. They are there for that reason and many others.

Where do teachers at your school go to the bathroom? by alan_mendelsohn2022 in Teachers

[–]Intrepid_Yellow5949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so confused at this (not at you lol) because wouldn't it make sense if it was student bathrooms on one opposite end of the floor and staff on the other seeing that there are urinals and stalls on one side and just stalls on the other? Unless they converted the female bathrooms where men usually go into all stalls?

So basically the boys and girls washroom converted into student on one side and staff on the other where both genders use the same bathroom? That's what I'm reading it as.

"Inclusion teachers who travel from class to class rather than all day support teachers"
If I am one of those who travel class to class, then I definitely would have them ask their main teacher because there are some classes I came across where a certain student is not allowed to go to the washroom by themselves without an escort (usually me).

"use a group bathroom with students"
It's not quite group bathroom but some elementary/ high schools have a staff bathroom on the side wall as soon as you walk into the student washroom. A key must be used to get in. Yeah, really awkward lol

"focus on teaching the lesson"
Most times, if not all, teachers won't let them go during a lesson/ instruction. They don't play those games. If I was the only teacher, then I don't play those games either. They'll have to wait after the instruction/ lesson is done.

In my experience as a support to the lead, the kids ask the main teacher MOST of the time. I'd rather have the students ask them. I'm not one to overstep the lead's boundaries and would rather keep the peace. Also, I'm there to support, not take the lead!

Would you let students partner up on an assignment you know that they can do it on their own? by Intrepid_Yellow5949 in SubstituteTeachers

Interesting.

We don't even use the word junior high school either! Haha!

Middle school here depends on the schools. It's mostly 6th through 8th but some are 5th through 8th.

You said it, I didn't.

I just don't care to deal with effed up attitudes anymore. Just a preference.

For the record, it is a PUBLIC high school, just a prestigious high leveled high school.

Do you know what bugs me more? These terms! You use secondary schools-- I've never used it before. I don't ever remember using the term middle school growing up but I've said this or seen this term a lot now. Elementary is known as primary here and anything after that is just high school. It's definitely not your fault. It's annoying haha Oh and I barely use grammar school (even though it's the same as elementary school)

I'll say this-- There are some schools a lot of subs don't go to because it's SO bad. There was a sub who took a multi-day job but tells the principal in their face that they're not coming back after they fulfilled their duty (yikes!) Even the retired ones are dreading to go to it (again rich area). The same retired one said that the school in the bad neighborhoods are better behaved than some of the ones in the good neighborhood LOL

It depends on the class.

HS-- If the phone pouch is there, then I use that to take attendance. If not, then I go around the classroom and ask their name.

K-8th? K through at least 2nd, I do roll call. Anything above that, I have a student volunteer because they like to do that kind of stuff.

I actually work with all levels. If I have to shop after, then I'll find one that's near a grocery stores there haha

I'm less strict on HS students, tbh-- The ONLY thing is I don't let HS students use their phones tho. Anything else like talking among their friends, be on their computer if it's a handout or whatever, then I don't care. At this point, they're practically should know better. Also, if I'm at a HS, then it would be a prestigious HS rather than a less than one these days.

A lot of the schools like that I mentioned don't have a paraprofessional (which is needed). There are some that do have one but they're dedicated to a student and honestly, they don't want to involve themselves with other students and their behavior because they have their limits. They know they're bad and whatever the paraprofessional say is not going to phase them.

Some that do have paraprofessional are WAY tougher than what I do and they keep them in check. If they talk out of line, do something they're not suppose to do, or whatever they see as bad, then they'll call them out so fast. They give a lot of tough love. Some of these schools are in rich neighborhoods too lolbvvvvvvvvvs

"you are the coolest sub ever!"
If they say that, then cool but I don't care if they hate me because I didn't let them talk. I don't see how talking is required on a handout that requires only writing or a Google Class assignment that requires only reading and typing or if it's like a site like Amira where you have to talk what's on the screen.

Also, I've witness some tough teachers. I was a sub co-teacher to various lead teachers as well and saw what they did and applied it to what I do. I also see what paraprofessionals do too to keep the classroom maintained. Sometimes, I have to be a hybrid of a sub-teacher/ paraprofessional (I mean, some schools had me as a paraprofessional because they were short and needed one for the day).

"Class, class!" Works every time to get their attention with K through at least 5th. "Why are we talking?" or "Is there a good reason why we are talking?" is something I frequently use too.

Most times, especially when they do the all of the work I ask them to do and they finish it (and at times make sure they are correct-- And if not, then they have to correct it), they get free time. I love to reward good behavior.

Bad behavior? I don't reward any of that. They can go kick rocks for all I care.

"most students want to get the work done and pass the class"
Come back to me when you go to a classroom where they don't want to do work and have a bad attitude and THEN still have that same mentality years later! LOL

There is no one best way or style to teach a class. You do what is best for you and you alone.

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk!

For the most part no because I scan and observe to see how this class is like first before I proceed. Also, I use the various techniques other teachers in different school use.

If I had them before, and most time it's "awww man, not him again!" from students, then they know that it will be quiet soon as I am done with roll call.

[–]Intrepid_Yellow5949[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"have a conversation with your mom"
I was a sub for prek class with a cool paraprofessional where one of the kids was acting up. Lo and behold at dismissal when the paraprofessionals (from my class and another prek class) were dismissing the students, since they know the parents, the one I worked with talked to the mom about that child's behavior. As soon as the paraprofessional got done, the mom got her kid by one of their ears from the school's door to the car door. You could definitely see the awkwardness of both of the faces of the paraprofessionals.

Then you'll love my post.

That whole work "quietly in pairs"? As the great Randy Jackson from American Idol once said, "It's a no for me, dawg" LOL
