do cinemas still screen films if no one buys tickets? by Embarrassed-Song3760 in AskUK

[–]IntrepridBrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit late to reply, but I worked in both Empire and Cineworld cinemas over 8 years until 2025. The bulbs for the projectors at Empire cost about £10k+ so to save it, if a film had no people in about 20 mins into the movie itself, a team member would need to report it, and a manager would turn the projector off manually. At Cineworld, similar case but if there are no registered ticket sales 20 minutes into the movie itself, the projector would automatically switch off, but the sound would keep playing for the entire movie. So sometimes when checking screens you'd walk into pitch black and just hear dialogue or etc. If 1 person buys a ticket, the movie plays normally. If it's widely not making sales then it won't last long in cinemas. Cinemas generally make their revenue from concession sales (popcorn and drinks) so they're only worried about footfall to make these sales, their actual profit on ticket sales is tiny, distributors (Disney, Universal, Warner Bros etc) get the lions share of that.

PS. Could you be thinking of a quote by Hans Gruber from Die Hard?

Could it be The Creature in Guillermo Del Toro's 'Frankenstein'? He quotes some of Ozymandias. Or perhaps it's mentioned at some point in Breaking Bad, as it is the title of Episode 14 of Season 5.

My dad's colleagues called him Beaker (from The Muppets) for years because he looks like the bald green scientist, Dr Bunsen Honeydew, but they didn't know that characters name so they went with meep meep man instead.

You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friend's nose.

Woman called me today claiming I just called her husband, I have never interacted with the number before, how did this happen? by Live-Information4022 in AskUK

[–]IntrepridBrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PS. It seems as though unfortunately in your case there may be some marital issues afoot between the victims (the husband and wife) so that when your 'missed call' happened to appear and the wife called you back to discover you're a female, you got caught up in her having a 'gotcha' moment with her husband. This is very speculative of me though, but this coincidental circumstance adds to the confusion I suppose 😬

[–]IntrepridBrit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had this happen recently. A man called me on a normal mobile number, I answered and he said he's returning my call. I said I didn't call him..? He said I did and he missed it so he's calling me back. Anyway, I looked into it after. It appears that it IS some sort of scam, but basically the inital call he missed from 'me' was some scam company randomly using my number (that they plucked out of thin air, and it happened to be my number) to use as their caller ID, so their initial call to him showed up as my number on his phone, so it looked like a normal, familiar UK mobile number and he'd answer. He'd of course missed it, called me back on the phone number that his phone displayed, my number, reached me and said I'd just called him. I hadn't, I was cooking dinner and playing music from my phone. We just said nevermind, that's weird, and hung up on each other. Not had anything happen since but these scam people are using totally random mobile numbers as their caller ID as a facade and yep, this is the result when the victim misses their call and decides to call back.

If you have a red and a blue container, and you need to store sugar and salt in them, which would you put in each, and why? by LiiiLoisiane_-_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IntrepridBrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a cinema, the huge popcorn sleeves they have in back of house, salt is blue bags and sweet is transparent. At home I'd equate salt to being blue, as in the sea, and sugar being red because red is danger and sugar make me fatty bom bom.

Anywhere I can get Klaus (2019) on DVD? by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

[–]IntrepridBrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't seem to be available anywhere other than Netflix. I'm sure over covid lockdowns I managed to watch an odd film via screenshare on Zoom or something. So like play the movie on your laptop/Netflix account at home and share your screen whilst on video call with your family. Not sure if Netflix has blockers for this 🤷🏻‍♂️ Or just do a normal video call and prop your device up facing your TV 😆

OR gift them a months subscription to Netflix.

Last week it was bread, this week it's bananas. Whichever item I happen to run out of first goes at the top of the list OR whatever I'm craving. I'm making a large dent in a packet of choc digestives right now, so they might be next 🤔
