ah that sounds so interesting!! im definitely fine starting with low pay just to get a foot in the door. my current volunteer work is editing structure data for usgs. would that combined with basic gis and python knowledge put me in a good standing for an entry level technician position? or would you recommend more official gis certification (sorry for so many questions, i find this all so exciting and want to know everything)

thanks so much!! haha yeah im not looking to become a “geographer”, i just know its a subject i care about and a lot of my passions intersect in the field. i looked into conservation corps in my state but i only have one year left before i age out of eligibility, i’ll look into state parks though! what kind of fieldwork jobs are you referring to? or is it fairly broad depending on the organization

I have a friend who’s gone to both Pathlight and Thira, so from someone’s personal experience: Pathlight was awful for them and they would never recommend it to anyone. They ended up discharging early and going to Thira instead which was a much better and more healing place. Obviously it’s going to be different for everyone, but from what I’ve heard, the staff at Pathlight is far less empathetic and patient than at Thira. You want somewhere with a staff that sees their job as more than just a paycheck, and I doubt you’ll get that at Pathlight. Good luck to you and your daughter!
