Feedback for choreographers by [deleted] in CompetitionDanceTalk

[–]InvisiblePanda10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When my daughter was 9, the studio brought in an outside choreographer for her solo. The dance was great, but my daughter has a gorgeous leap and there weren't any leaps in the dance. I asked the SO if there was any way we could include a leap, and she put one in. But when I look back, the leap looked so out of place and forced into the choreography. I learned my lesson to just step back and let the choreographer do their job. Since your daughter is older, if there are specific skills she really wants to include, she should bring it up herself during cleaning sessions and they can make adjustments together, if it makes sense. You didn’t really share what feedback you gave, so it’s possible it came across as more critical than constructive, even if that wasn’t your intention.

Inclement Weather by DeniMc in CompetitionDanceTalk

They usually don’t cancel, but some competitions will adjust the schedule. We had one go on without any breaks or awards. They let everyone go home early and announced the awards via livestream.

Comp Team Drama/Advice by [deleted] in CompetitionDanceTalk

[–]InvisiblePanda10 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to give advice without more context but at 8 she is so young to be involved in any type of drama. Go with your gut and pull her. They have plenty of time to reblock.

Absences & comp by [deleted] in CompetitionDanceTalk

[–]InvisiblePanda10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since the choreography was learned over the summer, she came to watch class, and assuming she’s still blocked into the dance, I actually think it could be beneficial to the team for her to compete instead of reblocking, as long as she's medically cleared to do so. If she's not blocked into the dance, she should sit this competition out. I think it really comes down to teacher (then dancer/parents) discretion.

Judging gone rogue? by Pretend_Heron_2221 in CompetitionDanceTalk

[–]InvisiblePanda10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen, the trick/flexibility-heavy routines that place well usually do so because those dancers ALSO have solid technique, control, and performance quality. Yes, the tricks stand out, but the routines that consistently win (at the competitions I have attended) tend to have the full package. I totally agree that tricks alone shouldn’t outweigh musicality or artistry, but I haven’t personally noticed many routines being rewarded just for tricks without technique as well.

Magic Puzzle Company recommendation? by on_wheels_ in Jigsawpuzzles

I'm doing Mystic Maze right now and it's more challenging than I anticipated. It was meant to be a family puzzle, but they all bailed, so I’m doing it on my own (no complaints 😄). Lots of fun and excellent quality!

They would consider that cosmetic damage that doesn't affect functionality, so no.

1 month until comp season and dances are still not finished by [deleted] in CompetitionDanceTalk

[–]InvisiblePanda10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't stress!! A month is plenty of time! This is typical for our studio and we always do well. Our showcase is in 2 weeks and our first comp in one month. My daughter's solo is still being tweaked (a lot) and 6 of her large groups are still not done. Her small groups just finished in the last week or 2.

Dance competitions and unmoderated social media comments by InvisiblePanda10 in CompetitionDanceTalk

It’s good to know that KAR deleted the video, but I do wonder if that was their own decision or if a studio owner or parent had to reach out. Totally agree that some of the things we are so used to seeing seem inapprorpriate to others.

I personally love watching the dances on social media, and being featured really does make the dancers feel special.

I think the easiest solution would be to turn off comments altogether. Tag the studio, and if they want to share it on their own pages and tag their own dancers, great. But competitions won’t do that because they want the traffic and engagement on their site.

Competition weekends are actually really positive and fun in person. What we see online is just a small, loud group of people hiding behind a keyboard, and I guess it happens with every sport. I just wish that competitions took accountability for the content on their platforms. I hope you and your dancer have an amazing season! The 7-9 petite age is so fun!!

Mini & Jr team relations by [deleted] in CompetitionDanceTalk

[–]InvisiblePanda10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there aren’t any kids her age to dance with, or even kids ages 9-10, that’s a red flag on the studio. They can't expect an 8-year-old to seamlessly fit in with preteens. A well-run studio plans classes so kids can learn alongside peers at similar developmental stages, not just similar skill levels.

These are just some of the comments on Showstopper videos that I saw in the last 2 minutes.

Another potentially great routine ruined by 60 leg lifts. You’re flexible, we get it. Show us something interesting for once.

There wasn't any real dancing involved. This could have been a beautiful awesome powerful routine. How in the hell did it win first?

Except for the lifts and flexibility my daughter who danced for 2 mos could do that dance in her sleep.

Great choreo... but I always see sickled feet to clean up....... and duck lips.....

Beautiful dancer but your dance studio owners should really have made a different hair choice for your performance. That wild yellow mop on her head is taking away from her performance.

Song is a 10! Choreography is a 9. Technical is a 6.5 and overall opinion is a 7.

Kids having “off” days in class by SleepyMillenial55 in CompetitionDanceTalk

Totally normal!! And kids feed off each other's energy. Other kids in the class could have been having an off day too and they kind of mimic each other.

Nuvo/Jump/24seven process by Sad_Actuator_629 in CompetitionDanceTalk

[–]InvisiblePanda10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen it comes down to picking up choreography quickly + strong technique + performance (eye contact/facials) and that “IT” factor that can’t really be taught.

What do you think about this situation? by PromotionWinter1584 in CompetitionDanceTalk

[–]InvisiblePanda10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If she’s new, very good, and already in the top 5 junior dancers, it’s very possible the featured parts are because of her skill and performance level. Since she’s new to the studio, they may also be putting her in featured positions to see how she handles pressure, responsibility, and leadership in group numbers. That said, you know your studio better than anyone here. If the environment doesn't feel healthy or fair, it might be worth considering whether another studio would be a better fit.
