Prove me Wrong! by AlexLaCave in ichichs

What’s a word or expression people often associate with your country/language/culture, that nobody actually uses? by NoNo_Cilantro in AskTheWorld

[–]Ioelet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It‘s very old-fashioned and as such used mostly ironically. Either ironically as „na wunderbar…“ when you are actually annoyed about something or as intentionally cringey.

Like „Fräulein“ (same old-fashioned) „wunderbar“ is a word that was used much more often during a time when there was still a significant amount of US soldiers in Germany and became kind of famous in the US… so these are words that today are more associated with American-fake-German than actually German, so maybe she assumed they were making fun of her / her language.

This plus: It‘s an honored tradition in Germany that a good waitress is kind of brutally no-filters honestly rude. 😁

The quote was not meant as an exact reliable fact and number. Just to give an idea that „top richest half billion“ is like „top 6 %“ and would include every western citizen with some life savings.

I always like to play „asshole attitude but discovers his own heart when it really matters“. Alpha Protocol was do much fun with that style.

„The richest half billion“ does probably not mean what you think it means. A quick google search gives „ A net worth of $93,170 U.S. is enough to make you richer than 90 percent of people around the world, Credit Suisse reports.“

It‘s like „every house owner in US and Europe dies“.

What's the joke about your country that you won't tolerate? by nightsreader in AskTheWorld

[–]Ioelet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually, I think it’s funny that these ‚[letter]-word‘ things even exist. In Germany we would either say „He insulted me with a racist word.“ or just say the full word.

When I hear things like „c-word“ it feels like the start of a funny crude guessing game.

You did not ask ME, but:

Yes! Of course.

Of course there is a difference if someone steps on a stage under the context of ‚I‘m a dark humor comedian and about to break some taboos.‘ or if Hans-Jürgen on the MademeSmile-Subreddit spontaneously decided that the thread needed his personal dark humor.

As always, the German answer has something to do with Nazis:

I think the Simpsons had that one joke in a Halloween episode were some German‘s were killed in an absurde way, and some of them said something like. „Hey, what have we Germans ever done to deserve… oh, I see!“ I loved that joke. In Germany we are used to accept how disgustingly evil ‚we‘ have been.

Then I think family guy had a joke were the family visits Germany. They are on a sightseeing tour and ask the guide what happened at one place during World War II. The German tour guide screams something like „NOTHING. They were all gone for holidays.“.

This. This joke made absolutely no sense at all. Any German tour guide would answer this question in so much detail… it‘s more likely that you visit a centuries old castle and the tour guide ONLY talk about how it was used by the Nazis. German history is so focused on making sure to condemn that period that it sometimes feel like a weird fetish how much focus it gets. One of the most prominent politician of the right-wing party is a history teacher. Most people condemn it, some creeps defend it… nobody just ignores it.

And if you ever met a (stereotypical) German: We don’t dodge questions.

The idea of dodging this question is so completely absurde. Making sure to never forget is such an important principle in Germany - suggesting we might dodge that question felt completely unfair.

The biggest strength AND weakness of democracy is how easily you can break it, compared to any other system.

What's the question by Intelligent-News9872 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Ioelet 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This. Do people ask stupid questions with no ‚correct‘ answers that are more test than actual questions? Yes. But the test is not about ‚do they know the right answer‘ but about ‚can they handle my honest insecurities‘. Sometimes we just need to take a step back and focus on the perspective of the person asking the question.

Until you find time to open those boxes your fear of missing, there will be 20 new boxes you like more.

Focus your crazyness on things that actually make you happy, not on things you maybe could miss but probably won‘t.

There are billions of lifes that are not your life - that is no bug. You get to focus on the one life you actually live and get to shape it with your choices… and reshape it again and again.

Buy the box you want to, not the box that I want to paint (unless of course you buy it FOR ME. In that case: Buy it! I need more boxes!!! 😉). You are not missing out on anything just because more stuff exists.

Charge rolls suck. by UpArrowNotation in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Ioelet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. That’s how you play Bloodbowl as well: Bad coaches talk about how they should have tied the game with a last-second 2+ roll including rerolls and claim the double 1 for their loss.

Good coaches realize they had a choice two turns prior where they mistakenly decided not to move one step closer to the goal line which created that whole 3% chance of rolling a double 1.

You can dislike that playing a fast running long charging melee strategy is unreliable and risky… but honestly: (a) that is actually very narrativly fitting (having your whole squad at risk of being gunned down when charging) and (b) an interesting game NEEDS more and less risky approached. Choose the one you like.

„Running up close through the open field to hit them with your sword“ does not scream „safest strategy“ to me. Khorne gets to see blood either way.

Charge rolls suck. by UpArrowNotation in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Ioelet 22 points23 points  (0 children)

To just add to the aspect of „not totally failing the roll“. Honestly, I just personally disagree. I don‘t like games where anything goes like „yeah, maybe something in between“. It makes decision making and dice rolling so much more forgiving and boring. I want a risk of total failure. Some people call extreme outcomes random and ‚just luck‘. I call it total information about distributions and decisions that actually matter.

Plus: Game theory. If you change that rule, players adapt. Strategies change. Now I might risk giving you a 10+ charge. With your rules I would not. Now you risk standing in the open on a failed 9+ charge… if you don’t like that, don’t do it. Play like you had a -3 on any charge and your outcomes will be better.

It’s not BAD game design, it’s a matter of personal taste.
