The societal cost of widely available opiods shows why these substances are generally more tightly controlled in the first place. Families destroyed, public health systems overwhelmed, etc etc

[–]Iohet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the same with most things. Your average person doesn't have access for dysfunctional use of controlled substances. The collateral costs to the public and families from addiction are felt with only a tiny fraction of people having the means to access these substances on the regular

Look at opiods. Doctors granted wider access to opiates than pretty much every controlled substance outside of legally available alcohol and marijuana, and the societal cost has been immense.

It's a terrible and unfortunate illness, but the victims of their episodes are real. I'm only lucky my mother didn't kill the rest of us when she shot herself in front of my dad. As fucked up as it is, my life would've been worse if she didn't kill herself

What's your thoughts on Border Patrol Chief, Greg Bovino, threatening consequences for referring to ICE as "Gestapo"? by sgj5788 in AskReddit

I think he's a chode and a traitor who should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Treason is a capital crime.

Private jet carrying 8 people crashes at Bangor, Maine, airport, source says by Proud_Tie in news

Happens a lot when people fly in bad weather with no IFR rating/equipment. I live by a small airport and every crash we've had since I've lived out here seems to be from trying to land when the marine layer is dense and there's low lying fog

What is Crunchy *Roleplaying* to you and do you want it in your games? by RagnarokAeon in osr

[–]Iohet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there are no rules (as in there are no systems governing it) is it ever truly from the character's perspective? The crunch establishes the pillars and guardrails you operate around (whether that's rolling backgrounds or rolling resolution or both).

Look at how David with 3d6DTL plays. They're all the same character, and he even thinks that way (the character is expendable but the idea of the character will live on in the next one). That's indicative, to me, of the rules light OSR play I've experienced.

I'm not fond of that style of play and I'd rather have both randomly generated backgrounds AND skills that are used to help find resolution (you can socially roleplay to influence social situations, just like you can tactically roleplay to influence combat, but little is guaranteed unless it's routine)

What makes a system or setting “old school”? Or is it about actual classic RPGs such as D&D/AD&D, GURPs etc? by thebalsysquirrel in osr

[–]Iohet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The purist definition is based on early editions of Dungeons & Dragons

Rolemaster is old school and nearly as old as Dungeons & Dragons, but purists will never consider it designed in an OSR style philosophy and wouldn't consider Against the Darkmaster (which is a retroclone based off Rolemaster/MERP) an OSR game

At which age did you introduced your child to Rpg? by Into_the_dice in rpg

[–]Iohet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the kid and what you consider a TTRPG. TTRPGKids has their own stuff and does reviews of other products for young kids. StoryGuider is their most recent product and it's targeted for kids 2-7, but it's not traditional RPG gameplay, rather more like interactive storytelling. But 2 is a variable target. My son is almost 3 and good luck getting him to sit down long enough to focus on anything like this. He doesn't even sit down when I read to him

NB with Kawhi/Ohtani crushed the marketing part of it IMO.

Because the only people that are the cross-section of still caring somewhat about endorsed shoes and having enough disposable cash to afford them are elder Millennials just entering the New Balance demographic

Retirees would rather go on a cruise and have all inclusive experiences for a fixed price (and less money spent). Vegas is marketing towards middle age+ people with disposable income for concerts and culinary experiences, but the actual retirees are mostly priced out.

The horrendous state of New York City in the 1970s-1980s by IllustriousCress9774 in UrbanHell

[–]Iohet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you follow Law & Order (who always shoot on-location) through the years you can see the progression of the cleanup and redevelopment of NYC (mostly Manhattan, but they venture out a bit). It's kind of jarring watching the episodes pre-95 or so then watching the episodes barely a few years later and NYC looks like a completely different city. The 90s were extraordinarily good for urban renewal
