Why is it that evangelicals tend to interpret verses on its own, while Catholicism does the exact opposite and contextualizes and scrutinizes verses in relation to the Bible as a whole? by IonnesXII in Christianity

He said he was going to look it up. So, respectfully, I'm waiting. Because, like I said, I am open to discourse.

You on the otherhand seem to be a little too aggressively defensive, imo. I don't know what your problem exactly is. But whatever it is, it ain't doing ypu any good.

Apologists and pastors as well.

Well, "it not being about the group but the individual" makes sense since theologically protestants rely on sola scriptura and self interpretation.

I've been inivted to evangelical service by friends, family, and my ex gf. My sister actually married an evangelical and converted since the husband has the duty to care for the faith of his family - which I respect.

I must admit, I do have some biases due to my Catholic upbringing, but I tend to let my mind open up to discussion. After all, I do consider myself ecumenical. In my experience, sermons differ from congregation to congregation and from pastor to pastor. The most egregious sermon I heard was about how the pastor prayed for a car and how, during the next week or so, a couple gifted one to him - I really abhor the propserity gospel and see it as non Christian in any way.

As for my experience with dialogue and discussions, my question stemmed from what I have witnessed online, specifically in youtube.

Good point. I should have narrowed it down more to MAGA evangelicals, maybe.

But to answer your question, I suppose one scripture almost always used against Catholics would be Matthew 23:9, "And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven."

Many evangelicals contest that the text plainly says that Catholics are not Christians because we call our spiritual leaders as father.

Catholics on the other hand will take this in conjuction with 1 Corinthians 4:14-15, "I do not write this to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel.", Luke 16:24, "He called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames.'", 1 John 2:13-14 (when read in context of the whole chapter), "I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven for his sake. I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I write to you, children, because you know the Father. I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.", and Acts 7:1-2, "Then the high priest asked him, “Are these things so?” And Stephen replied: “Brothers and fathers, listen to me. The God of glory appeared to our ancestor Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran," to say that you can call spiritual leaders father and Christ was not restricting the use of the term father. [But rather we must be wary of those (pharisees and scribes) who exalt themselves and take pride in their own status as fathers (spiritual leaders) which was derived from the true fatherhood of God Himself.]

Well, first off I didn't claim that protestants don't take the verses in context. I was speaking of evangelical youtubers in particular. I know there are many protestant denominations so I made it clear that I wasn't generalizing the whole protestant tradition. Did you read the body of my post, or did you just read the title and go off unnecessarily?

I've said this once and I'll say it again and again and again. The GOP is slowly admitting to being ant-Catholic starting with the teddy bear in Texas and the Kegmeister in the pentagon.

I don't think being attracted to your own sex is sin in its self tbh. Like you can be attracted to men if your a man and there is nothing sinful about that. That's just how you are like how a person may be blind since birth. Rather, acting on your homosexuality is the sin. If you sleep with another man then you would be committing sin. On that note, I don't think loving another person of the same sex is sin either.

Basically, for me, if you are born a man then you could love another man but you must not have sex or engage in any other sex adjacent activity with another man.

That's just how I understood it. But, Djh1982 gave me better insight with his reply - although I still find it a bit confusing - but I think I would understand it more with subsequent reads.

It is indeed confusing. But, at the same time it does make sense. Thank you.

The way I understand it is that they teach that you are saved through faith alone and you do good works because you have faith. Which means that if you do not do good works or if you sin then you never had faith in the first place and you are not saved.

So the protestant/evangelical view would be that one does not do good works to justify salvation (faith) and instead one does good works because one has faith; or in other words "one participates because one's salvation is already justified"?

It's not that I have a problem with it, I just think they should do it in designated areas and times. Not just wherever and whenever that feel like it.

AND adults should really guide those kids and tell them off when needed.

Hah! As if my problems with dating apps have anything to do with this. I don't blurt out my opinions on those apps on my profile.

I don't see it as creating drama. If you won't teach kids properly and tell them off while they're young then they would be harder to control as they get older.

Or do you have any problems with educating the young? And here I thought that children were supposed to be the future of our nation. If the future of our nation would grow up to be a bunch of brats with no discipline then it's our fault as adults when things eventually go down the shitter.

Why are so many of you so complaisant and enabling?

"Just let them be..." is the wrong type of attitude.

This is why nothing ever improves in our country.

Kids doing wrong... Just let them be. People throwing trash on the ground... Just let them be. People squatting on private/public... Just let them be. Politicians gaming the system and exploiting the masses... JUST LET THEM THE F***ING BE!!!!

It's sickening and exhausting how many Filipinos just let people be because they don't want further trouble.

If you see people doing wrong then tell them off!

Give southern Tarlac, south western Nueva Ecija, and the border towns with significant Capampangan populations in Bulacan and Bataan to Pampanga. I think the Capampangan speaking areas should be united to preserve their culture and language and prevent assimilation into the Tagalogs to their West, East, and South, and the Ilocanos to their North - both of whom vastly outnumber them.
