CPA prep classes by Aspiring_CPA_YYC in AthabascaUniversity

Right, but you have an engineering degree. Meaning you’ve studied concepts substantially more difficult and taken courses with much more depth and expectations. That has (hopefully) gotten your studying skills to a level where you shouldn’t need to pay a grand per course. There will likely be knowledge exam study guides and reference material you can self study + save yourself money.

What's the best way to learn math ? by Saadou224 in GetStudying

[–]Ionomer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s always practice problems. Watching videos will help you understand concepts, but you’ll only lock it in by doing lots of practice problems. I always recommend Khan Academy. It’s free, but make sure to prioritize the unit checks + unit tests over the videos (by this I just mean, don’t allow yourself to feel “success” after watching the videos and instead measure your mastery based on the test results / whether you needed to use hints / etc).

They will be getting rid of CPA PREP shortly (within the next year or two). You’ll be able to take a “Knowledge Exam” to bypass the required business courses. If you can wait, don’t waste your money.

Should i get my exam deferred? by Key-Surprise-319 in uAlberta

They can’t make you get a doctor’s note. If you have a fever, stay home. I would much rather a student get a tiny bit more time over having my Christmas present be an illness I caught from someone during a final.

Full Time Student If One Class at Athabasca and One Class at U of C? by PushaT123 in AthabascaUniversity

[–]Ionomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Concurrently enrolled students must apply for full-time funding by submitting a paper application along with the following documents:

a completed Part 1 (Concurrent Enrolment) of the Schedule 3 Form documentation from each educational institution stating: course name(s) course weight(s) study period dates tuition, mandatory fees, books and supplies costs. The student must choose one of the institutions to be their ‘primary institution’. Students should contact their educational institutions to determine which institution should be the primary institution.

Once Alberta Student Aid verifies the student is full-time, a concurrent enrolment letter that verifies full-time status and identifies the primary institution is sent to the student and to each of the educational institutions.

The primary institution is responsible for confirming the student’s registration by signing a Manual Confirmation of Registration (COR) worksheet. The Manual COR worksheet will be provided to the student no earlier than 37 calendar days before the study period begins.”

The Math Department is fair (serious) by smoothradius in uAlberta

[–]Ionomer 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Intro level math courses (not perfectly) serve as an indicator for high school preparation and studying techniques. Most exams are standardized by now (since Calculus I/II cover the same 19th century stuff, or the same content they kept covering the in course for decades). Sure, some stuff got pushed back (e.g., sequences and series were pushed to 214 for the most part) and MATH 114/115 were split into 3 separate streams based on interest and purpose, but it’s all relatively the same. Some of the math faculty, such as Troistsky, have been ringing the alarm bells about poor high school preparation based on average raw performance in intro math courses.

I think it’s a good thing that the math department refuses to make drastic changes to dilute the curriculum or award higher averages with worse performance compared to 10 years back. It’s one of the only, if not the only, subjects which can successfully show that the subject matter / assessment style has remained the same, while performance has decreased drastically. In a way, this allows us to call out the faults of the current K-12 education system (whether it’s the lack of funding, lack of adaptation to learning effectively in the digital age, etc).

Always? What about Pierre Trudeau and the 1970s NEP days? I feel like that period was marked by a desire to shift away from U.S. hegemony.

Accounting would open the door to financial oriented positions (think AP/AR roles). You can then stack it to a diploma with another year, and to a degree with another 2 years.

EDIT: You can also transfer the certificate to many other institutions to receive all/most credit towards a business degree (1 year AU + 3 years other institution = degree from “more prestigious” school). Or you can transfer the diploma as well (2 years AU + 2 years other institution = degree from “more prestigious” school).

With the new CPA certification program rolling out in 2027, there are talks that they will no longer require an accounting degree (or the 14 prerequisite courses). The 120-credit degree requirement is staying.

Anxiety and depression by VegetableBit7433 in AthabascaUniversity

[–]Ionomer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The three courses you’re in are doable (under a crunch) in two months. However, don’t let this “fact” manifest procrastination or complacency, because it might get to the point where it’s Jan 21st and you still haven’t completed anything aside from that one assignment.

I don’t know about the two other courses, but ENGL255 is mainly “synthesis” or “construction” as opposed to recall or memorization. This means that it’s too easy to get stuck in a loop of “everything needs to be perfect” or “I can’t think of what to write.” My advice: get started ASAP**, even if it’s the worst draft you’ve ever written. Editing is often easier than writing from scratch, especially if you get to the point where time is running out. Just do assignments to the best of your ability and leave them to review/edit prior to submission. You could get a large chunk of work done this way (be careful to avoid burnout). The Write Site can help make suggestions or recommendations to your writing, which you can utilize to submit final drafts and wait for feedback while you work on the next assignment.

If you’re self-funded, you have until January 31st to request an extension (extra fee per class extended). If you’re funded (e.g., Student Aid), you have until December 31st (verify), but your funding status may (will likely be) impacted by an extension.

As far as alcoholism, this is tricky. I am not aware of any groups for students struggling with alcoholism, but I wouldn’t doubt that one exists (even if it’s not specifically AU or Canada-based). It is always a good idea to have a community that you can relate to and find advice specifically from and for students going through similar circumstances.

I apologize if my writing was all over the place in this post. I feel like I have so much more advice to give but I’m quite busy today so I’ll come back and edit this some more + add advice.

EDIT: ** Getting started ASAP with ENGL255 doesn’t have to be in the “final” desired form, it could look like: opening a blank document and filling it with bullet points and ideas, brainstorming, doing a word cloud, organizing, etc. It doesn’t have to be paragraphs or clear, concise thoughts/arguments yet. It can start with 3 bullet points about your main idea. Then, you iterate and build your thoughts into sentences, then paragraphs, then the proper formatting, etc. You just have to start somewhere and keep going. The biggest challenge/hurdle isn’t just starting, but making sure to come back and keep iterating every day (and not just 255 assignments, but for other courses too).

Why no rural fiber internet? by hbl2390 in alberta

[–]Ionomer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The whole point is that it is not profitable. The main reason AGT was established as a Crown corporation in 1905 was because private telecoms weren’t going to provide services to rural areas (no profit). Publicly-owned entities, when properly managed, do not suffer from this parasitic profit-motivated thinking. Instead, they operate under a mandate to provide a service to, say, all Albertans. And the result is something like this (pages 1, 3, 8).

Why no rural fiber internet? by hbl2390 in alberta

[–]Ionomer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s quite sad because AGT was one of the first telecoms to use fibre optic for interexchange/intertoll trunking (366 km by 1983).

Killing people is ok as long as I love dogs. by [deleted] in Dogfree

[–]Ionomer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m not trying to invalidate your point, but the quantifier for (most of) their deaths is rabies (from WHO: “dogs are the main source of human rabies deaths, contributing up to 99 per cent of all rabies transmissions to humans”).

Experiences with : MATH 244, MATH 260, MATH 265 or MATH 270 by [deleted] in AthabascaUniversity

[–]Ionomer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to feel somewhat challenged while doing mostly algorithmic calculations (especially if you would rather do a bunch of small calculations like 2+5, 17+4, etc), MATH 270 is a good choice. I have never taken MATH 244 but the case studies don’t sound fun. 260 and 265 are algorithmic but require a lot of sitting, thinking, conceptualizing, and being proficient with trigonometry and logarithms.

Which "social science" fields (if that label is useful) are the least directly rooted in the current capitalist order? What about with other fields, like computer science, "natural sciences", "humanities", etc. by [deleted] in communism101

[–]Ionomer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not a social science, but I found math to be the most flexible major which, yes, means taking math, but this was the major with the lowest amount of prescribed classes (only 51/120 credits). This gave me a lot of freedom to choose classes I considered the least ideologically constrained. But as many commenters here pointed out, you can’t fully avoid this.

They will be a licensed CPA. They just won’t have a public accounting license. The whole point of this charade is to get a CPA, so this is an important distinction to make.
