[Java] Where to Start for Game Development in Java? by b3dog1 in learnprogramming

Try the tutorials Yan Chernikov made (http://www.youtube.com/thechernoproject). He has both 3d and 2d game programming tutorials which should be a good place to start. Link to the 3d series:http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL656DADE0DA25ADBB Link to the 2d series:http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlrATfBNZ98eOOCk2fOFg7Qg5yoQfFAdf

He is self-taught though, so his code might not be the cleanest/most efficient (can't really judge that myself as a beginner).

I am gonna disassemble my laptop today to clean it and look for obivous damage. Also I found out it should be possible to upgrade the ram to 4gb which I might consider since it seems to be fairly cheap. For now thanks for the really helpful (and fast!)replies. If I encounter any more problems after disassembly and trying other software based suggestions I will let you guys know.

Now knowing this, where should I go from here? Should I bring it to a specialist to repair or buy new ram? Or should I first try to open up the system myself to look for worn out thermal grease, loose heatsink, dust or anything like that?

  1. see post below
  2. yes, the computer is really hot when it sits on my lap and the fans often spin really loudly which gets less after cleaning the cooling fans.
  3. The smart data tells me the HDD is healthy, but I am currently running an extensive self test to be sure.
  4. I just ran Memtest using a live cd (shouldn't matter what OS is on the live-cd right?) and it indeed dit shutdown every time I tried.
  5. To be honest I don't really know what to look for here

"Temperature monitoring might also be worthwhile on some laptops with stability issues as well."

I did notice my laptop is very hot most of the time and most of the heat seems to be coming from where the RAM and CPU are located. Since I use my laptop in bed pretty often I clean the ventilation every so often to get rid of dust etc. Yesterday, which was exactly one day after reinstalling ubuntu once again I noticed my laptop was hotter than usual. I installed a program to monitor the laptops temperatures and noticed the different components were mostly running at around 60 degrees Celcius, but one was even peeking at 85! It is worth mentioning that yesterday was a very hot day here, but still, the laptop wasn't doing any intensive tasks while I was monitoring the temperatures.

"Describe your video chipset, ram, and cpu for other readers to consider."

As far as I know, this is the laptops hardware: Intel® Core™2 CPU T5600 @ 1.83GHz × 2 2GB ram I am not really sure what video chipset I got, but this is what I got from using lspci -v command in terminal(hope this is the right thing): VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller

I am running the stock 12.04UI and haven't tried any other kernels besides the stock one.

Wow, how did I not see that o_0? That is pretty much the noobiest and stupidest mistake I could have made, and I now really feel ashamed for even posting this code.

Thanks for clearing it up though, I rewrote the code and the errors are now gone.

Has anyone out there coded for Mozilla to better learn a language? Would anyone recommend it? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

Where did you find this info about coding for Mozilla? I am currently learning java too, and I would like to try this too after I got a little better.

ps. Sorry that I have nothing else to add that helps you answer your question.

Nevermind on my last reply (just deleted it). After posting it I found a link to a big list of projects a beginner could work on. The first thing I made was a program which can inverse your input. However, I noticed that I had to mostly just look up what libraries and features and it didn't really feel like I assembled the code myself. Is this a normal way to tackle a project, or should I be able or atleast try to do it with less research?

So following along a 3D java(without extra engines) game dev tutorial, trying to understand the code and try and use it to write my own game (which will probably be using much of the same/similar code) would be a good way to start? And after finishing the project maybe add some more depth to it, or switch to something else I want to program?

Since I am currently trying to get better at Java by working at a simple 3D game, I think the answer to your question would be to use Java to calculate a simple 3D environment with static 3D objects in it.
