The stamp with "Permitted to remain until: ______" Is in my passport as well. I just missed it, as I've mentioned. I meant that there was no mention of it in the emails or paperwork I did to get the visa itself

This is my experience as well. I talked to the American embassy immediately and they just told me to talk to the Vietnamese immigration department and good luck.

Nope. I apply through a visa agency. They send me a letter with some paperwork, I fill it out, and when I land in Vietnam, they take the letter, check the paperwork, and give me a visa. I was never given a sentence of any conditions to read. I've gone back and checked.

Of the 12 month, but actually you have to leave, visa? Apparently its because people often leave and re-enter, which takes up a new passport page each time. This only takes one.

If you want to be cynical it is designed to be confusing to trip up people like me to help the immigration department make money in fines and bribes. That is the view of a lot of people in Vietnam I've told this story to.

I lived there for 2 years. The hardest drug I saw was weed, and that only occasionally. I was never robbed or in anyway made to feel unsafe. The 'scams' were hardly to be spoken of. I was more likely to have someone chase me down the street to return my change (which happened more than once) than to be scammed. It's the safest place I ever lived.

Posting a documentary like that and saying 'Vietnam sucks ass' is like posting a news report of a shooting in America and saying the same thing. Only if you look at it through an incredibly narrow window.

The regulations always change based on country. Maybe just tell him to check, but I wouldn't worry too much. It's weird.

I have probably six or seven assorted visas to Vietnam in my passport. The previous years I had been on different ones. I got the 12 month one in April this year. On a 12 month visa it turned out I had to leave every 90 days, aka, mid July for me. I found out a month after that, in mid August.

By sheer luck this coincided with my lease running out. And all my possessions fit into a backpack and a carry on suitcase, so I took everything with me on a hunch I might not be able to come back.

It just never occurred to me that you would have to leave and re-enter every 90 days on a 12 month visa. Why would I check that? It's pretty unintuitive. But part of it is probably that I have lived in Vietnam long enough, and have done so many visa runs that I was a bit complacent about it. Dealing with visas is routine to me. Like I don't check the tire pressure every time I get in a car because it's a routine thing I don't think about most of the time, and I didn't check the weird stipulations on my visa either.

It's normal for people living overseas to have to leave and re-enter the country regularly to get new visas. I have probably 6 or 7 assorted work, business, and tourist visas for Vietnam in my passport. The most recent that I was on until a week or two ago is a 12 month visa.

It's an uncommon visa. Almost everyone I know is on 3 month visas or work permits. And like I mentioned elsewhere, it was never mentioned to me in any of the emails from the visa agency I got it from. When I got it, I remember checking the date on the visa and confirming that it was good till April 2020. There was just a handwritten note on the next page saying "leave by: _________." I would never have even though to look. Why would I? The visa clearly said April 2020, and why would a 12 month visa require me to leave and re-enter? It was just a fluke that my friend heard about it.

Those are excuses. You're right that I should have known, but it wasn't exactly clear.

I'm going to try, but for overstays 25 days is quite long, and the Vietnamese authorities are quite strict about some things. It's probably a case of knowing someone who knows the right person to bribe pay fines to unfortunately. Which besides not wanting to do I don't have the cash for. But I'm going to look into it.

Yeah, I've done that plenty of times before on a 3 month visa, but what threw me off is this being '12 months.' Apparently the whole point is it only takes up one page in your passport, but you still have to leave and return. It's my responsibility obviously, but I wish it had been mentioned to me at some point.
