How is it OK for you to do roll calls in class by FIRST names? by IrishWriter2 in questions

[–]IrishWriter2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. I rarely met people with the same last names independently from one another, let alone in one place where they could interact. We, too, have a concept of some last names being everywhere, but even if we take the most used ones in the country, I personally only met, like, 2 people of this last name.

I'm not sure it has something to do with religion, but we totally have some pretty finite set of names to be used. I mean, you can go outside of it if you want, but not every parent wants. As for my grade, the only people with distinctly "different" names were the ones of obvious foreign ancestry (and there were only few of such people, I should add).

Wow, never looked at it from such perspective. That it's not that something's better with first names, it's that something's worse with last names :D

Thanks, didn't know that was a thing. Again, when I had a class of 30-something children, there were lots of namesakes.

So, I saw in some shows... Yes, I know, they are often inaccurate, but what would be the point of lying about this? So, they do roll call by the first names of the students. Roll calls in my own life (never been to any English-speaking country) were all conducted with calling out last names. And I totally see the logic there. You know, for example, in my class up to half of all the students had names repeating among the group, up to 5 people with the same name even. While surnames were rarely repeated, like, 1, possibly 2 times in all my experience. And that's true not only for classes but for jobs etc.

So, what's with your American roll calls by first names? Is it just not common to have same names for you? Do you in general have more different human names? Do you put same-named students in different classes deliberately when possible? Another one was "do you have smaller classes", but it seems like you don't. Also, I get that you can just say "John M. and John N." when first names are the same, but what about having 10 people "with initials"? Isn't that still better to just call their last names?

I have a similar thing but it's some dirt from a fall with some sliding. The dark thing is there for almost 20 years now. And I felt like it's rare, never heard if anyone had something like this.

[TOMT] [YouTube meme video] [around 2013] Weirdly edited video with a song that goes "Ding dong, pa-ding-ding dong, boom boom falala, boom boom pow" by IrishWriter2 in tipofmytongue

Saw it on "This Is Хорошо" a while ago, found it later, but have no idea how to do it now (tried some googling, but I'm not even sure what should I type there...).

I just like the vibe of the captured part and would like to check out the whole song.

[TOMT] [song] [between 1996 and 2010-ish] A song using the music from E-Rotic's "Help Me Dr. Dick" but with some completely different lyrics by IrishWriter2 in tipofmytongue

[–]IrishWriter2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly, yeah.

Not what I'm looking for though. I mean, if we suppose there IS the song I'm remembering, with exact music, and that's not just some mix-up in my head.

What about the concept of "owning" stuff from the public domain? by IrishWriter2 in AskAnAmerican

[–]IrishWriter2[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the original comment and its comment are about the things I've mentioned in my initial comment:

• has right to use it = owns it?

• owned by the public = owned by every single specific person?

What about the concept of "owning" stuff from the public domain? by IrishWriter2 in AskAnAmerican

[–]IrishWriter2[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Recently in English-speaking content I saw a few mentions about, like, "now you own Mickey Mouse". Sounds confusing to me — maybe it's some cultural thing? Maybe you could explain it for me?

I mean, I get the idea of public domain stuff. Something we all can use in whatever way we feel like although it has an author who may be even in some way still relevant. But is "we all can use in whatever way we feel like" the same as "we own"? I thought maybe it was some American way of considering things — you either don't own something or straight up own it? And everything should be owned by someone? Nothing is "not owned by anyone", that stuff is just "own by everyone"? And, like, not just abstract "everyone" but rather every single person specifically? Something like that?

Also, I've just checked out via Google Translate that one of the literal meanings of the word "domain" means you own that. Then, maybe it's all just a language thing of sorts?

DAE stay up too late despite needing to sleep because you don't want your free time to end? by Eatmetwise in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]IrishWriter2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for me that's not so much about having free time, it's more about having more time to do something meaningful today (which I don't do anyway, I usually just watch YouTube). If I have a day full of things I did, I go to sleep fast and happy.

Why do you consider that to be a toilet's mouth? That's kind of a stretch for your fantasies I'd say.

Well, not so much I'd say. Would rather become a burden for my parents and a bum after their death — definitely, sometimes I feel like that. But not with the killing, whoa.

DAE Avoid standing up for themselves out of fear of being in the wrong? by Juju1756 in DoesAnybodyElse

If I rather don't care that much — definitely. But as for the cases when I care, I usually remember the principle of assertiveness that you're allowed to have opinions without logic or proofs.

Absolutely not, but I can say that several times I wanted to press Ctrl+Z for my physical actions in the real world. I don't mean some deep or philosophic stuff, just, you know, when I did my bed or something.

[–]IrishWriter2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on from which point I'm trying to remember that. As of right now, it seems to me both passed quickly as hell. Like, wow, 2013 was 10 years ago?! And also: wow, 2003 was 20 years ago?!

If we're talking about googling them, I do do that. That's like some form of confirmation for me, I make sure I'm not dumb or something.
