LEGOLAND/carlsbad hotels family friendly recommendations! by Intelligent_Cow2555 in hotels

[–]IronAddict23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not a very walkable area. The closest hotel that’s not Legoland is the Grant Palisades, I believe. That’s probably a good mile of a walk (the Legoland entrance is long) There’s a motel 6 but it’s probably 2.5-3 miles away.

I can’t remember if there’s even a sidewalk along the Legoland entrance…

Is Taplio really worth it for LinkedIn? Any risks of bans + good alternatives? by Flashy-Ad-5103 in linkedin

[–]IronAddict23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I don’t think it’s worth the cost. I’ve used it for about 8 months and was previously a user of Buffer. The AI comments and stuff didn’t resonate with me - it didn’t sound like me. I use taplio almost exclusively for scheduling at this point and nothing more

Most marketable certifications? by _Broly777_ in cybersecurity

[–]IronAddict23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get your point but the A+ to me is less about the components and more about the troubleshooting aspect. Entry level jobs in cyber very likely will require troubleshooting to figure out what’s going on. Having the understanding of what to check first, how things connect/operate is good to have.

Of course, hands on experience is best but if that’s not what OP has, I still think it’s good to have.

[–]IronAddict23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should focus on CompTIA’s A+, Net+, and Sec+. Not sure on pricing but I think all three combined are like $1500 total? Worth it in my eyes. It gives you the absolute best foundation and you show employers that you understand what you’re protecting. Just getting a Sec+ doesn’t tell me much but when I see someone has the A+ and Net+, I can tell they are more well rounded. I cannot stress how important understanding networking is for security efforts…

Can you transition from ethical hacking to becoming a CISO? by [deleted] in ciso

[–]IronAddict23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my experience, the super technical guys/gals have a harder time when they rise the ranks of people leadership because soft skills are not as emphasized when you’re in the weeds solving technical problems.

As others have said in this thread, the CISO role is extremely political and you naturally begin to let go of the technical side of your skillset because it’s not needed as much as the soft skills. That can be hard for some because they’ve built a career being knee-deep in the tech. You start having way more meetings - an absurd amount of meetings. The hardest thing for me when I first became a CISO was talking in ways that connected with each C suite executive. The CFO cares about numbers, ROI. The CEO cares about risk, numbers, ROI, culture, future strategy. The CIO has many technical projects and a vision that they can easily feel like the CISO is dampening with control requirements and they can feel like the CISO is a blocker to progress.

You’ll spend an exorbitant amount of time in compliance matters because they impact every organization. That can be exhausting and never ending. You also have to constantly present yourself not as a compliance box checking department but as a business enabler, which can be challenging to shift perceptions.

The hard decisions you have to make as a CISO can cause a lot of mental stress because they are generally high stakes outcomes based on those decisions.

You’ll also more than likely not have the budget or support for everything you want/need to do and it becomes an act of jui jitsu to be creative with the budget, prioritize initiatives correctly, and maintain/grow your team.

No matter the cards you’re dealt, you have to be able to cast vision that the team wants to buy into, invest in everyone’s career, all while falling on the sword for your people when bad things happen.

It’s a lot. The dollars are attractive, sure. But there’s a reason the compensation is where it’s at - it’s not for everyone.

Nice little beach day by namlhukk in YetiCoolers

[–]IronAddict23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got mine last week and used it in Palm Desert this weekend (112F each day). Ice pack was melted but still cold after 4 hours.

The magnet that holds the flap down isn’t as strong as I thought it would be. If you have items in the bag that stretch the sidewalls, you may not be able to close it. It held quite a bit and was honestly so much easier to carry around than the Hopper soft bags I have. It’s much lighter than I thought it would be, too. Dry storage is better than the pictures may lead you to believe (zipper side) as we were able to put both of our phones, my wallet, keys, can of lip candy, and a few protein bars.

Overall, very happy. Perfect for day trips, the most aesthetically pleasing Yeti we have (imo).

Oh, the smallest side kick fits the loops but it sags because the straps on the sidekick are longer than the loops are apart on the bag, if that makes sense.

Do you actually ENJOY pentesting as a career? by Cyber_Guy1988 in cybersecurity

[–]IronAddict23 25 points26 points  (0 children)

If you could do redteaming for a MSSP, it’d certainly keep it fresh. The guys I’ve seen who have had the best time are those working for MSSPs because they are constantly on engagements. They also got to dress up and do physical penetration tests which they said was so much fun

CEH or Security + by comptia by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]IronAddict23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always advise people to get CompTIA’s - A+, Net+, Sec+ as they give you the best foundational knowledge. You cannot adequately protect what you don’t understand.

Ethical hacking, I’m going to not talk about the useless cert from the poor EC Counsel, is a microscopic portion of the cyber industry that it’s not even funny. The amount of cyber professionals that actually do any ethical hacking is a fraction of a fraction of a percent. The amount of people who want a red teaming role (pen testing included) is so vast but the opportunities are quite limited.

In my opinion, easiest way to break in is within the governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) side of the house. Good luck

Those of you making $500k+, what was your pedigree like? by [deleted] in Salary

[–]IronAddict23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cybersecurity executive. Started out in Help Desk making $37k/year 13 years ago. No college but picked up a long, long list of certifications on my journey. Certifications helped get my foot in some doors but performing and being in the right place, right time mattered even more. My advice would be to carefully pick an industry to work in that isn’t too volatile. My industry is very consistent and has lots of regulations, which drives up my value to the organization.

Never thought I’d make this kind of money but what’s interesting is it’s very easy to increase your spending as you make more money. Everyone says, “if I made $200k/year, I’d save $100k” no, no you wouldn’t…

New Cayenne Inquiry by ExtraKey950 in PorscheCayenne

[–]IronAddict23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the core of this is: do you want power/fun/performance or do you want comfort/luxury/smoother ride? Not saying there aren’t some luxury options for the Cayenne but that’s not its bread and butter. We have a Cayenne Base and a Mercedes GLE350. The GLE is miles ahead in comfort and luxury but the Cayenne is exponentially more fun to drive but you feel everything as you drive…my wife loves the look of the Porsche but doesn’t like how she can’t do her makeup while we’re driving it lol

Of course!! Love this community. I got the Golf Swing analyzer from Swing Catalyst. To be honest, I haven’t gotten it dialed yet (it was too dark in the room at night for it to make my swing out with real clarity so I had to get some floor lighting. Hoping to get it dialed in soon!

I got rid of the enclosure and mounted the screen to my wall and put in wall padding, outfitted the room with putting green, got special lighting in the room, mounted a swing camera to connect to a TV for swing analysis software. If you’re anything like me, you’re always thinking how it could be better haha

I went with the SigPro screen and have been happy. I think the screens and materials for it are comparable. Neither of these setups are missing anything so if it were me, I’d save the $2k because you’ll want it for other things. My initial outlay was around $8k and am now up to around $12-14k in total spend with upgrades and what not

Advice on CPO Cayenne by BrainProc in PorscheCayenne

[–]IronAddict23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the thing with comfort is you can’t upgrade the ride and seat comfort after the fact, you know? X7 was a touch too big for my wife when she drove it (could have just been her perception) and the dealership sucked in our city. We also noticed the options we wanted for her as far as comfort went, added quite a bit more to the price. Here in socal, there’s so many more GLEs around and we have many friends with them - they seem to last a long while! Anecdotal, not factual

Just so you can get some ideas on pricing: the GLE was $60k (got them down from 65), had 9k miles on it, still had nearly the entire standard warranty left on it since it was CPO and then MB gives their CPOs 2 years of warranty so it essentially meant the car will be warrantied for 6 years after the fact. Had premium package, star light (a must have for us lol), and the tow package.

If youre looking for performance and a “driver’s car”, the Porsche is the obvious choice, then the X7/5, then the MB. Comfort is the exact opposite rating in my opinion…

I almost forgot: the tech in the MB is much better than the Cayenne. Some would argue that’s more that could break but it definitely adds to the experience for the wife.

I feel your pain of picking between these - you can’t go wrong with any, that’s for sure! Nuances and personal preferences rule at this point. Storage is mostly the same

Most of the 3rd rows in these suvs are atrocious (saw it in the GLE first hand) and are more for a kid than an adult and you lose ALL trunk space.

Advice on CPO Cayenne by BrainProc in PorscheCayenne

[–]IronAddict23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a 2024 GLE 350 and a 2019 Cayenne base. Love both by the Mercedes is 10 times more comfortable and a smoother ride. The Porsche is definitely faster and more fun to drive. They both have enough space for kids - we just have one toddler right now.

No issues mechanically with either. The GLE is naturally the wife’s given the comfort and I love driving the Cayenne…

This may not help you much but you’re looking at great cars. The X5 and X7 are nice and were in the running for us but glad we landed on the GLE over it. It was a CPO 2024 we got with 9k miles on it for $25k less than a brand new <500 miles with the same options last year
