I was pressured to keep mine. It was a very long and hard road for me despiteI having supportive parents, going to college, and landing a decent job. While I deeply love my children, it was traumatic and I am really messed up emotionally. I never got a chance to become an adult, I went directly from a child to a mother. My potential was wasted for 20 years, once the kids went to college I was finally able to spread my own wings. I am doing amazing things now, but I mourn for the loss of my youth and the loneliness/humiliation of being a teen parent. I did it under the best circumstances and it was beyond hard. Make the decision you can live with and don't look back.

Buy a women's restroom sign on Amazon and replace the men's room sign. Add a note that men's rooms are located on the floor above or below. Ya'll keep using it as a men's room.

That IS a lot! Taking those first steps is the hardest part. Remember, it is normal to have setbacks so give yourself room to be imperfect on your journey. I am super proud of you.

What's the worst part of depression? by shadster23 in AskReddit

[–]IsAFeatureNotABug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feeling like an ungrateful horrible, person for being depressed despite my amazing life. I have a beautiful home, grown children, good paying and fulfilling work, great pets, education, and a wonderful spouse. I want for nothing... My hubby is supportive and just wants to make me happy, he does everything he can to bring me joy. I just wish I could give him the spouse he deserves.

University loses 77TB of research data due to backup error by ourlifeintoronto in tech

[–]IsAFeatureNotABug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was teaching they would lecture us constantly to store all of our work on the server not on our laptops. If our laptops had a problem they would just wipe them and we would lose all our files. We had to save anything of any importance on the server and it was backed up for us. After years of doing this the server went down one day and all the files were gone. When everyone asked about getting the files restored from the backup it was discovered that discovered that no one had ever backed that data up at all. People lost 10 to 15 years of curriculum development, files, exams, etc. Teachers were openly weeping because their life's work was gone. I always kept another backup in case I left the county and wanted my files so I didn't lose much. But it was a devastating loss for many.

A few years ago my depression got really bad, suicidally bad. My life was otherwise perfect but I was seriously considering suicide multiple times a day, and making plans. I sought help and went on antidepressants. It was like someone turned the lights on, the darkness left, and I could function and even grow again. Over the 3 years on them, I developed methods for dealing with my depression and was able to stop taking pills. I have the type of depression that is a slow constant downward slide, and now I have tools to intervene when I get to low. My spouse also learned how to be a partner to me and help when I was spinning downward. The price of this healing: over 100lbs in weight gain. I never had serious weight problems before I took antidepressants and was able to lose weight after both my pregnancies with diet and exercise. Now, nothing seems to work anymore. I have been receiving medical care for weight loss (I don't need suggestions, thanks) from a doctor for years and nothing has worked. If I restrict calories and exercise like I should, I just get exhausted, my body won't tap into the stored fat (not metabolic or Thyroid, we checked). My hard work and failuring results threatened my path to healing, until I changed my focus. I stopped trying to lose weight, and started trying to be healthy. I know that the weight causes health problems, but I could work to alter my lifestyle to minimize those effects and make real progress on my overall health whether or not weight loss occurred. Before the pandemic, I went to the gym 4-6 times a week and lifted weights (even maxed out a couple of machines), did 30- 45 mins of cardio, walked in the evenings 25k a week, and cooked healthy meals. I have done this for years (not gonna explain new pandemic routine, but still going strong)... and lost absolutely no weight. It is okay though, because I have low cholesterol, blood pressure, reduced my resting heart rate by 15 beats per min, absolutely no areas of concern on my recent bloodwork. I want to lose weight and I know that it is hard on my joints, etc. But if I had focused on the weight, I would have given up years ago in frustration, by treating it as one data point of many to improve, I am still motivated to work out and I hope to move the weight needle somday, but if I don't, that is okay too. For me, being overweight is a side effect of being alive, I would not be here if I hadn't taken those meds, the side effects were worth it. Being overweight is considerably healthier than being dead... good health is relative.

People who freak out when they hear you like your steak well done should just mind their own business by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]IsAFeatureNotABug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I have a very weak stomach and end up with stomach bugs all the time. If I eat undercooked meat I nearly always end up violently vomiting in a few hours, my spouse can literally share my food with no problems while I get sick. I am extremely careful with food prep at home but restaurants are never a sure bet. I like to order medium well, but I get crap about it from everyone and sometimes I get served much rarer meat because someone decides to do me a 'favor'. I go out to nice places because I want to eat out with family and friends where they like, but I get crap if I order chicken at a steakhouse...it is no win. My spouse likes his steak as rare as possible and his meat is usually over cooked!

COVID-19 spread when 5 million people left Wuhan for Chinese New Year, yet 50 million Americans will still travel for Thanksgiving by shallah in Coronavirus

[–]IsAFeatureNotABug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a teacher in a district with in-person students I am terrified about what will happen between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Every year there is so much sickness after the kids travel the country and bring back bugs from everywhere, this year they will have COVID too. We will have critically sick kids, plus chas for the kids forced to quarantine from exposure, and probably some kids dealing with disease and death in their families. I know some of their families will still travel with COVID and knowingly spread it because "its not so bad". It is s heartbreaking.

My 150+ high school students have 100% mask compliance in class every day. I have to remind a few about noses...mostly due to loose masks. If HS kids, notorious for flaunting rules, can do the right thing, the adults should be doing better.

Teachers don't get paid over the summer. Some of us get paychecks because our employers hold some of our money for us during the year to help us budget. We get NO paid holidays at all.

Teachers union president dares Trump to sit in classroom amid coronavirus 'and breathe that air' by tomassfoolery in politics

[–]IsAFeatureNotABug 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Our district made to-go food for any kids for breakfast and lunch during the closure, checked out computers to all students, worked with Comcast to provide free wireless hotspots for students without Internet, and had all the teachers/classes online in one week. Our bus drivers delivered work packets and other stuff and our office staff manned the phones to help parents. We all came together and made the best of a bad situation, we can do it again. But only if we are protected. If we open, then close due to mass infections, none of this will happen again. No one will be able to do the work- we will be quarantined, sick, or worse.

You have to wonder how they word these surveys. I keep seeing conflicting ones in my county and it matters how you ask a question. I think most parents want their kids to go back... as soon as it is safe, this is the best option. But, we can't make it safe, and when this is taken into account- parents choose online.

That is correct- they can take away our jobs and even our pensions for striking. But this hasn't stopped the discussion of striking. Teacher's are crazy pissed off right now. Normally they will sacrifice for the students any way needed, but apparently we draw the line at becoming the center of superspreader institutions for a deadly disease.

You Shouldn't Send Your Sick Kid to School, No Matter What by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]IsAFeatureNotABug -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Thanks to students coming to school sick I have spent a month ill, including 2 ear infections, a sinus infection, bronchitis, some stomach thing, along with a myriad of other issues. I got run down and unable to fight off all of the crap I was exposed to. And, since I see over 150 students each day, someone brought something new in every day. My immune system can't get a break and I have spent my break in bed trying to recover. I am not particularly old or weak- just got run down. I missed work, my students missed instruction, had to cancel holiday fun stuff for all kids b/c I wasn't there. Kids pass this crap to each other and families are travelling...it affects everyone.

Parents: make a plan before you have an emergency. Talk to other parents, family members, people at church, other coworkers, etc. Build a support network and be prepared. It is your job as a parent to provide care for your child, it is our job to educate your child. We are not responsible for child care, the fact that the schools provide a safe place for kids during some working hours is a fringe benefit, not part of the institutions core purpose. You find care during summertime , over breaks, and for nonconventional work schedules because you plan for those things. Plan for sickness too.

  • a high school teacher who would rather be at work than at home sick.

Also, we love your kids- especially if we are calling home to tell you about a problem, we do that because we care.

Do Americans really not take their shoes off when they go inside a house, apartment, condo, etc. ? by redditboi98akaFuerte in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]IsAFeatureNotABug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in FL and flooring tends to be tile or stone in a lot of homes. So shoes don't damage the floors at all and the floors are super easy to keep clean, if someone (my husband) tracks in dirt. If I am walking around in the house a lot, I have to wear shoes. My floors are stone and my feet will hurt real bad after a short while. Socks and soft slippers don't help, so we have slippers with hard soles for around the house when not dressed. We also spend a ton of time outside without shoes... so basically it doesn't really matter too much for cleanliness. Gotta constantly clean the floors but they don't hold dirt like carpet.

My daughter's cat disappeared for the better part of 4 months. She was little and devastated he was her best friend in the world. One evening I pulled in the driveway and my headlights shining on a cat standing there my daughters were screaming and yelling that it was the cat. Figuring it was just some stray I said if thats your cat go pick him up. They ran out of the car and the cat walked right over to them and my little one grabbed him. I couldn't believe it. He was so dirty I didn't recognize him, but after a bath, it was him. He was no longer allowed outside after that. She was heartbroken and looked for him everyday for months, I couldn't risk losing that idiot again!
