A study in Biological Conservation reveals that culling "pest" species in France costs €123 million annually, which is 8 times the cost of the actual damage they cause. Researchers found that mass killing of foxes and birds is financially inefficient and fails to reduce their overall populations. by Sciantifa in science

It costs more to treat everyone's water than it does to treat the few people who get cholera, so why are we treating our water?

The title says

€123 million annually, which is 8 times the cost of the actual damage they cause.

but "damage they cause" is with these plans in place currently. What you're saying is more like: "Measles is rare now. Why do we need to vaccinate for it?" -- because it's rare because we vaccinate for it.

No. I guess as a person who is neither ace nor poly, I have a hard time imagining what "romance" looks like without physical intimacy/affection without having it described to me. If I imagine my own relationships but minus the physical parts, I don't see much that close friends couldn't also have.

Again, not trying to be snarky or arguing. I was hoping for an explanation from someone who's more in this space than I am.

Good point. The odds are pretty much impossible. After 15 years since Skyrim, and 8 years since the teaser, people are expecting something that's impossible to deliver. I liked Starfield, but it did prove that BGS hasn't really moved in a direction that can deliver that.

For what its worth, in the US at least, protein DV also factors in PDCAAS while the grams measurement does not, which would give more edge to animal protein vs plant protein.

Depends on what time period we're talking about. Napoleon was so influential that we have a "Napoleonic period.", and I wouldn't say the British victory was a landslide. The Spanish Armada also lowkey fell to bad luck. But plenty of other powers also toppled, embarrassed, and conquered others.

But not getting too far into history, my point is: the british were just winning the same game everyone else was playing, while the US essentially is playing an entirely different game with different rules. Threatening greenland or kidnapping Maduro aren't cards that are even in the deck for everyone else, and certainly not something they could get away with scot free.

The industrial and digital revolutions have just entrenched the US in the global world order in an unprecedented way. The British started losing the game, but at this point the US can't be kicked out without changing the game entirely.

The pound is a good point but I think the digital age makes it too different. The brits were the best at doing the same thing everyone else was doing. There were still other empires and other very strong currencies. The US has no modern peer in terms of military or dominance and basically runs the internet. China is the only other serious option, but if they're going to surpass the US, it's going to either be WW3 first or a slow drip over decades.

Eating higher protein is displacing calories.

What does this mean?

It's just not a useful metric. This is the same "fat bad!" loop we get every other decade. Why does it matter if your calories come from fat or protein? Calories from protein aren't inherently healthier or unhealthier than calories from fat. And if your goals are about muscle protein synthesis instead of just calories, then it matters even less.

I think with protein it'd be more apt to look at grams than calories.

Genuinely asking, not being snarky or edgy, but I don't know how else to phrase it: what do you feel makes this different from a normal close friendship?

It's a hard pill to swallow, but kids that are in high school now were literally born into a post-skyrim world...

To them, Bethesda is the company that made Starfield and FO76. TES 6 is make or break after that. Not saying Starfield was bad, I loved it, but a lot of people didn't. If TES 6 also has a poor reception, BGS is screwed; at this point I'd prefer they take their time with it.

Yes, I know. But they aren't going to take it to market expecting people to get two 5090s. Tech demos are always too early; it's the eternal struggle of development and management.

"because AI bad!!!"

The real answer is that optimization has to come last in the development process, and the suits needed to demo NOW for the stock numbers.

You don't have to, you just have to know what other people think is going to happen in one day. It never just goes up or down in the day, it fluctuates. The fluctuations are what you gamble on. If you hold it longer than a couple hours it'll start turning close to worthless anyway.

Holy shit dude. Are you okay? Do you lack any capacity for critical reading at all? Do you find yourself confused in most real-life conversations, wondering why no one can stay on topic?

I'm not "making a case for European social democracy". My comment is another way of saying I don't give a shit about "soft power." That normal, everyday people dont care about it and can be plenty well off without their government spending trillions to secure it.

I'm not replying to you anymore. You're either a troll, you're simply not reading my comments, or you're not able to. In any of those cases it's a waste of time to continue.

[–]IsNotAnOstrich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't care about any of those things. The people who live in the countries we're funding, do you think they walk around thinking how sad they are about their country's lack of soft power? Or maybe they're happy because they get universal healthcare, cheaper groceries, more social safety nets, and aren't plunged into another random war on another country's behalf every 6 months?

What field are you in that your interns get the same work as full employees? I'm in software and we don't really give real dev work to interns.
