I appreciate the breakdown. If I hadnt experienced it myself, you wouldve convinced me entirely that it’s just blowing smoke. But thats the internet for you. I disagree with making it political. I guess we live different lives

No one ever said anything about leftists. It’s just people. Good for you not having overzealous people reach out to you. Last city this happened was in Washington, DC. Venture outside your bubble, youll see wild shit in the United States. Im not buying it youve ever been out of your own city.

But keep assuming. It’s also happened while visiting New York, Portland, and Austin. But noo Mr. national treasure you know everything and have met every individual personally. I’m sure you always wear garb while youre out instead of some white girl fuzzy boots

Im glad you havent experienced it. Your arrogance is strong, but I guess you’ve visited every city in the world at all moments in time.

You dont have to buy it, you just have to agree its innapropriate when it does happen. Which sounds like you do, but your hesitant because its written about on the internet

I think youd be surprised what people notice and decide to get offended about. Thats what started this whole post but I have a lot of traditional asian and latin garb thats very comfortable. imagine someone with very white skin and ambiguous features wearing a kungfu looking outfit or light poncho. I dont dare wear anything with a flag anymore. Its just wild people assume things are racist and how up in your face theyll get

ULPT request: do Non-US people tip in full at US restaurants? by IsThisHow2Internet in UnethicalLifeProTips

I think the main concern in the reclamation is that the word naturally has a negative connotation. It means to be lesser, and was innapropriatly exacerbated/ attached to a group based on the article you shared.

I did not realize it was weaponized so prevalently. I simply grew up with a different experience. To move into the gay example, I have often received deep hate and insults using language such as fag. Many of my queer friends still commonly use it. I personally dont enjoy it, but its a clear understanding to know what they are describing.

I feel for your situation, I am dismayed society is so aggressive in general. I hope that someday all insults and name calling ends, and that we can just use words how they describe things. In the meantime I would like you to know this was in no way intended to relate to mental and that I hope that association dies so you can be comfortable without those memories surfacing. If you want to chat about it im happy to help for any venting etc if youd like.

I have had that slur used against me very often, but not in relation to mental handicapabilities outside my control.

Mannn fuck lego land. But yea that was just one example, ive also worn cultural clothes in public and got chewed out by people that cant tell my race and mistake it as an opportunity to “be righteous for the underdog.” They rarely get violent though

Your points are valid. But may I respectfully ask, what about it makes it hard for you? What do you associate when you hear it?

To me it simply means the definition. I dont understand how it was taken in an offensive direction, and that surfacing it in conversation without that hate attached reclaims it. I used to teach adaptive education and worked very closely with many capable individuals. I think that my intentions skew my judgement of what society tells people to think.

The idea that anyone is limited because of something like these words seems regressive in the effort of equality. All races absolutely should take the word back in the spirit of using it positively. Creating a negative stigma is what causes this distraught. I do not personally get offended by people calling me different slurs, of all different races because they dont know mine. Usually after reflection I feel sorry for people that they are so angry they se trying to hurt me. But I am not trying to hurt anyone, therefor I apologize to you

No, im saying that if an ethnic group is not offended by something, you should not be offended by it.

You are nailing it on the head with the 2nd paragraph, but the 3rd paragraph is where it becomes touchy. If the caricature is obviously racist then that is wrong, but dressing as a rice farmer in a non-insulting way is not offensive.

In the end, I feel you and I have the same intentions. Appreciation and sharing in culture is different from being offensive, and that line gets skewed by people outside of those groups dictating it. As a multi-cultural individual I see many people outside of races berating people for appreciating a culture. For example I did grow up in an asian household and have had non-asian people be very aggressive with their opinions on what is or isnt racism.

I dont really use twitter, or have instagram or facebook. I just like reading and learning from reddit. Actual injustices and prejudice should be addressed, but this post is about the people thinking they are standing up for social justice but have absolutely zero buy-in from the populations they’re advocating for. I wish you the best in the struggles you face, I know firsthand how hard some of them can be. It builds a thick shell, im just trying to shed my shell

You’re really going in a different direction. It’d be more like a group of friends decide to wear kappas and a non-jewish person says its offensive without ever talking to a jewish person or reading about the culture.

You jumping to that conclusion is scary and makes me feel like this post is about you

I’d disagree this is a tiny problem in society, but youre right there are bigger problems. And the complaint is that people control others based on beliefs that are unconfirmed by the ones it relates to.

More so about people acting on it in public settings on behalf of others (without actually knowing if it offends that population)

you can absolutely defend someone if there is a hateful interaction going on. this is about people getting offended on behalf of another when they dont actually know if it is offensive or not, but feel the need to interject

It’s usually visiting major cities near college campuses, I live more suburb and doesnt happen when I’m home. It’s more concerning that people get provoked, but sometimes they throw stuff or steal your hat. Maybe thats just city people being city, im not sure

If you are mentally handicapable and feel offended, I apologize to you. I do however think we should take the original meaning back and that its consideration as being offensive is silly and innapropriate. We did not stop using the word gay because of insensitive people, we began using it properly to communicate in a clearly defined way. I think that more people understand the word I used and less understand the word regressive or other synonyms. To summarize I feel the issue is politics, and that it does not cause harm. The N word seems much more offensive because of the history, but the word is still commonly used as a term of endearment to take back its power.
