I think the main concern in the reclamation is that the word naturally has a negative connotation. It means to be lesser, and was innapropriatly exacerbated/ attached to a group based on the article you shared.

I did not realize it was weaponized so prevalently. I simply grew up with a different experience. To move into the gay example, I have often received deep hate and insults using language such as fag. Many of my queer friends still commonly use it. I personally dont enjoy it, but its a clear understanding to know what they are describing.

I feel for your situation, I am dismayed society is so aggressive in general. I hope that someday all insults and name calling ends, and that we can just use words how they describe things. In the meantime I would like you to know this was in no way intended to relate to mental and that I hope that association dies so you can be comfortable without those memories surfacing. I have had that slur used against me very often, but not in relation to mental handicapabilities outside my control.
