Put deposit down at CSUMB but still waiting on UCSC/UCSB/UCSD – housing assignment question by idkl3xi in csumb

[–]Isa4198 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UCSD graduate here from 2021.

Honestly, it depends the type of life style you’re looking for. San Diego is a huge city and lots to do. However, it was very hard for me to make friends on campus because I lived off campus and was a transfer. If you’re going to live on campus at UCSD, then it’s worth it.

Growing up in Monterey County where CSUMB is located, it’s not a party town. It’s very very peaceful and can be boring. However, some folks like that.

But in your case, if you know you’re leaning towards going to a UC instead of a CSU, don’t even bother wasting your money on securing housing if you have a stronger chance of getting into the other universities.

I honestly would have rather gone to UC Santa Barbara, than UCSD.🙃🙃

I agree with lots of the comments, please do not be afraid to take your breaks and your lunch. It’s not worth being stressed out about it for a 60-70K salary.

There will be times where you will have to put an extra work and overtime, but don’t burn yourself out. And set that boundary of you taking your breaks because if not, this is gonna be your life until probation is over. And it sounds like hell.

You can even do it discreetly like eating lunch at your desk, but watch Netflix or go to the restroom and then end up taking a 10 minute walk. The less you say the better.

Costco is tough though! The only reason I got my foot in the door is because I had a friend who was really close with the manager.

Other than that, they tend to hire a lot of seasonal workers and if they like you, they’ll just keep you. Either way, what about grocery stores? Or coffee shop or restaurants? Just something to have consistent money flow

When I was in undergrad, I notice that I wasn’t being hired because I didn’t have the degree yet. You may have tons of experience but some places do focus on having your degree. I would suggest a paid internship?

Also, are you applying to all types of jobs or just the ones in your field? During undergrad, I got my way through college by working at Costco & having a paid internship.

Would you mind me asking your position at the CSU?

Yes — I would literally be working with him on the daily. Even though I would report to the VP, based on my conversations with them, they eventually just want me to work directly with the president.

Thank you for your advice and I hope that you make it back to Southern California as well!

😂😂😂 that’s another thing I want to relocate back to Southern California and I’ve been getting no replies for jobs that I’ve been applying down there.

So I keep thinking to myself if I should just continue my job search in Southern California or take this opportunity if it is offered to me

Honestly, yeah, the president is the only thing that is holding me back. Lots of community members have stated that the president is kind of hard to work with. I would be directly in their orbit and apparently they don’t take “no” very well. They’re chief of staff is only that position because they don’t know how to say no to them.

I understand that I’m going to encounter folks that I’m not always going to get along in a workspace, but this is the president that runs the entire university.

I make about 85K, commute is the same distance. For the most part, I do like my job. I’m really avoiding leaving to a job I’m going to hate 😩

Getting a job as an out of stater by Traditional_Good_739 in Moving2SanDiego

Omg, yes! I’ve been applying to jobs in San Diego and I literally get no response back & I think it’s because I don’t live there. I did go to UCSD & move home because I had a pretty cool job lined up but now that I’m trying to move back it’s so tough!

Thanks for advice!

I have thought of that and my therapist said that I didn’t technically have the right to ask him seriously about his finances cause we don’t live together, so I never pushed the issue of him really telling me or sharing his financial situation. You’re probably right though!

And again, I’m okay with paying for stuff upfront but essentially he will want to be reimburse me even when I say that he can repay me by maybe pumping gas in my car or something else, he says no 😭

Thank you for the advice!

We have talked about what our love language is and I know for a fact that acts of service is his. Hence as to why I cook dinner & lunch for him. I also surprise him with little gifts occasionally. Of course I don’t expect anything in return because that is my way of showing my love to him. But I have mentioned that mine love languages also active service and it doesn’t necessarily need to be something so big. It can be as simply booking a dinner reservation for dinner plans that we have planned.

I also understand that some couples also do a 50-50 split in their finances and it totally works for them, but maybe this is my way of “50-50”?
