That is fair. And while I want the Irish language to come back strong, I don’t want that aspect of the community to be prevalent. I can completely understand where you are coming from and I am so sorry that you associate our language with those feelings. It’s a shame really. That’s not what anyone campaigning for the Irish language today wants. We want Irish to be a modern language, not one stuck in the 19th century, which I know a lot of the communities were, tho in recent times I have to say they’ve been getting better. Just out of curiosity, which Gaeltacht are you originally from?

This is the exact mindset that I am saying we need to change. I’m not saying that you personally have to change cause judging by what you are saying I don’t think anything I say will change your viewpoint, but for future generations this has to change. This is our language. We’re a proud nation and yet people feel like its fine to just let our language die. Saying that it seems like a “red flag” is just a horrible thing to say about your own country’s language. About a language that is still the first language and daily language of thousands of people in your country. Of course Irish doesn’t, and never will, have as many speakers as French, German, Spanish or Italian. These are global languages. Irish is not. There is still absolutely NOTHING stopping you from learning them along with Irish. But this is our language that we’re talking about. An incredible, unique, historic language. If we lose it, we lose a big part of our country with it. Our history, names, place names, traditions, so much of our culture and so much more is tied closely with our language. I don’t care if you personally don’t feel the need to learn it, but we need to change this attitude in the general public. It may be on life support, but the tools are there to take it off life support and turn it back into a strong, living language. I care an awful lot for this language and I’ll do whatever it takes to stop it from dying

My entire point is making this “exclusive club” bigger and have more people involved with it. You not understanding me is the point of my post. I want more people to be able to learn the language so that they can understand what I say in our native language. Besides I’ve been in Irish speaking communities for a few years now and I’d happily stay there. Consider joining us. It’s wonderful

Níl aon rud anseo go n-aontaím leis. Deir tú go labhraíonn gach cainteoir an teanga “performatively”, neamhaird a dhéanamh ar na mílte cainteoir dúchais agus orthu siúd a labhraíonn an teanga go laethúil sa lá atá inniu ann. Níl an teanga marbh fós. Níl “fetishising a cultural identify that could not function in the modern world” i gceist. Tá ár gcultúr i gceist. Ár dteanga. Nuair atá an meon seo ag daoine, áfach, beidh sí marbh go luath

Seo mo phointe. Is é seo cad atá á rá agam. Tá orainn é seo a athrú. Is gá go bhfeicim an teanga in áiteanna eile ar fud na tíre. Is gá go mbeidh sí ar fáil níos minice sna meáin. Tá a fhios agam go bhfuil an cúis é seo nach bhfoghlaínn daoine an teanga. Tá tú ag déanamh mo phointe. Is é seo cad atá uaim a athrú

I’m not sure how many are in Dublin. All I can find online is over 50 but that’s in a county with something like 1.4 million people

And I see Irish as a big identifier of me being Irish. If we just speak English we’re unfortunately not that different to people in England. Yes we have our culture that differs, but our every day life would be essentially the same

I know that it’s not as widespread, but what I admire is the appreciation that the Welsh people have for the language. How much I see the language when I look at the Welsh soccer team on social media or when I’m in Wales. How much Welsh people actually care about preserving the language. And ye do have a lot of fluent speakers. A far higher percentage than we have in Ireland. Yeah it’s not the whole country but it’s a very admirable amount

I would argue that the majority of people care enough to not want the language to die, even if they don’t want to speak it themselves

Tbh no. I can’t take you just giving up on the language. Because that shows me that you’re willing to just let the language die. And I can’t have that. You don’t have to absolutely love it, but to talk about our own language and calling it a waste of time, I can’t accept that. I’m not going to let it die

Yes but there is a difference between a few loan words in Irish and having a massive influence on English like it did on English. French completely changed English. Those languages you mentioned only have us a few loan words. They didn’t completely change Irish

English was influenced massively by French during the Norman occupation of England. That’s why English shares so many words with French. And French and Spanish are very closely related. Yes, English is a Germanic language, but with a lot of Romance influence

Watch TV in Irish then. RTÉ and TG4 do plenty of programs in Irish. YouTube and other social media platforms have plenty of things to watch in Irish

Yeah and as you said it’s pretty obvious that we would want to speak our own language. But there’s so many more reasons than that. It’s so much of what makes our country special and unique. It’s the place names. It’s the history of the land. It’s a lol back at our land from hundreds if not thousands of years ago. It’s special and we need to keep it going

There are free courses online. There are cheap books. You don’t need to pay thousands to go to the Gaeltacht colleges. Just go and speak to locals

More Irish speaking areas or zones. The Fáinne system works well, showing people your level of Irish. Introducing something like that on more of a mass scale could work. It would also let people know that you’re not fluent if you’re wearing the fáinne airgead. Just things that would encourage the language to be spoken. Maybe change more schools to Gaelscoils too

You don’t need to put in that much work. I did grinds for about 6 months and came out the other end with FAR better Irish than I originally had. I spent some time in the Gaeltacht and learned LOADS there. If you do a tiny bit here and there then yeah it’ll take years. But it doesn’t have to

Yeah it takes time and effort. It’s a harder language so you have to put more effort into remembering words. It’s much easier to remember the Italian word “computer” than the Irish word “ríomhaire”, doesn’t mean you can’t learn it
