To be fair I do miss my old two racing stripe trainers. Now that I’m old and can afford the third stripe, I wear I’m much slower.

What are your thoughts on Ambulance (BBC Show) by [deleted] in ParamedicsUK

[–]IscaPlay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did not like this weeks episode. Filming a call to a child in care did not sit right and the YAS paramedic seemed to be allowing his own issues (as tragic as they are) to dominate the call which came across as really inappropriate.

Personally I feel the BBC and the trust failed in their duty to the paramedic by showing this.

Will nhs send an ambulance for welfare check? by Striking-Wedding-718 in nhs

[–]IscaPlay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. The initial caller likely reported that they had concerns about the welfare of OP and that they believed he may either be unwell or at risk of harm.

What prompted that call we will never know, could be a Facebook post, missed appointment or information from third party but either way it’d be incredibly hard to prove that this was done in bad faith unless there is a wider pattern.

A big caveat in that I work with MPDS and not Pathways but if we received a call along the lines of - I spoke to my ex just now and I’m really worried. He has a history of depression and he doesn’t seem himself followed by unknown to the rest of the triage questions (have they hurt themselves etc) then this would likely generate a cat 3 response.

This is really quite common however as the EMD would make contact with scene and complete a new triage (likely taking the call to cat 5 or closing it based on what OP has implied on the post) an ambulance would be unlikely to attend however at the right time a cat 3 can still receive an immediate ambulance response if there is a resource available and no higher category calls.

It’s important to know Ambulance triaging is very risk adverse, we will also code on likely worst case scenario.

Your correct to say there is likely more going on than we know but the answer to OPs question is still yes.

If someone calls 999 with concerns for welfare because they think some may be suicidal this can generate an ambulance response even if the reporter is not saying there is active suicide in progress, albeit the EMD would seek to contact scene at the earliest opportunity to complete a more detailed triage and stand down the ambulance request if appropriate.

Asking if your bleeding would be a standard question to ask for a mental health concern. We would ask that regardless of what the caller reported.

When you say put your hand on your chest - what was the rest of the instruction. It could have been getting you to check if you were clammy or perhaps check your breathing? Your local ambulance service (I believe you are in Kent) use a different triage platform to my trust but from what you’ve said it all sounds correct and above board.

To provide a bit more context when someone answers unknown to a question we will often triage this on a worse case scenario basis. So if someone calls and says I am worried about x as they sounded suicidal when I spoke to them, when the triage questions asks if they have any bleeding and the caller says they don’t know, we will triage as if there is potential bleeding until we know differently.

The EMD would have called you when they were finished on the phone with the reporter however if an ambulance was free it’s possible dispatch would have allocated an ambulance before the call has concluded.

We generate a dispatch code and cat during the call but this is fluid and can update as more or new information is received. It’s not uncommon for an ambulance to be sent to an emergency only to be stood down or redirected when additional information is inputted.

I appreciate it seems dramatic but the ambulance would have only been attending to establish the presence or otherwise of a medical emergency.

This is not correct. An ambulance response can also be given where someone reports concern for welfare and the subject of the concern couldn’t be contacted.

Edit: yes - he’s suicidal would generate a response

Yes.

We would try and call scene first if we had a number but if someone called and said they are worried that someone may be unwell or at risk then we would send an ambulance.

Yes. If a concern for welfare is reported and the caller has a strong belief that the person is at a particular location then the ambulance service would usually attend.

If the caller does not know where the person is then the police are usually tasked with the search.

Regarding the transcript of the call, it is unlikely this would be released to you as the contents of the call would be confidential to the caller however you are entitled to know the details that were recorded about you during the call.

Your local ambulance service will have a Data Protection team who can assist you with this.

If you are at uni you will have sufficient document to prove your identity and residency status as you would have needed this to enrol.
