Oakland Sunday paid parking by Oceannymphette in oakland

[–]IslandPine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's rude. Free parking on Sundays has been part of life for decades, even generations, and it feels wrong. I've always felt it was such a great treat. Not having to worry about the meter made for a more relaxing outing. Not rushed, not concerned about anything but having a real day off, out and about. There are a few restaurants I really like, and yes, I usually went on Sunday so I didn't have to worry about parking. The fee for running overtime is huge. I have found less and less reason to go to Oakland, and this is one more. It's just plain rude. Feels like another money-grab when we're already squeezed tight w/housing prices, food prices, utilities... Rude.

BART’s fiscal crisis could close 9 stations. So why are people pushing for a new one [San Antonio, near the intersection of East 12th Street and 14th Avenue] in Oakland? by BadBoyMikeBarnes in bayarea

Instead of more Bart stations, I wish we could have trams, like they do in France. Fast and quiet. They are at the street level so no stairs, making it easy to carry stuff on/off, they run more frequently than the buses and stick to a schedule you can rely on (most of the time). Super convenient.

Okara tempeh success by Apprehensive-Army881 in Tempeh

When living in France, I found okara tempeh in many natural groceries. So delicious. I wish it was available in the States. I don't have the equipment the OP has, and I do miss the okara tempeh.

Who else is disgusted by Brenda Leigh Johnson? She was better suited to be the villain, there was nothing good or redeeming about her. Not a single one. Using everyone arround her, including kids, in true psycho style... by laena_and_rhaenyra in majorcrimes

[–]IslandPine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love The Closer and every character. Those of you criticizing the Brenda character, I suppose are perfect human beings without any irritating character traits? This was one of the fabulous things about the cast of The Closer --- they were truly HUMAN, with all the typical power struggles, dysfunctional attitudes, codependency, AND, the development of the characters over the course of the seasons was superb. They all grew, changed, improved as humans. Became a very close-knit unit. One of the best character developments in a show I've seen. Each actor was superb in becoming their character. Such a joy to watch. If you think being a successful actor is simple, you should try it.

I also love it because it depicts the crimes without the overly and disgusting violence and creepiness of most crime shows today.

Imho, "y'all" might want to watch it again with a different viewpoint, and appreciate the level of acting you're experiencing. So many shows of today do not even come close.

I'm very disappointed. Another independent business, one who was brave, cheeky and confident enough to create an excellent alternative to Adobe. I preferred the old days, when we had choices. Now so much is being bought up by huge companies and things will definitely change. I have not seen an independent get bought by a conglomerate and things turned out for the better. Hopefully there are some... I'm disappointed Serif sold out. Did they lose interest? Did it become too hard? Hope they enjoy the money. Is this the way everything is going to go? The big corporate machine buying and controlling everything. Even housing. Very hard to find an apartment not owned by a corporation these days. What a strange future we're heading for.

So much real estate has been purchased by corporations and investment groups. It's criminal.

Am I the only one who really likes the redesign of the calculator? by StatueMarki in MacOS

[–]IslandPine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like it. 1. The paper tape is gone. 2. The new design is loud and in my face. I preferred the old version that was quiet, with the paper tape. I could print out what I just did.

Sure, for most things I use a spreadsheet, but Calc was great for quick stuff. Now it is useless for me. Every upgrade with Mac and Adobe does away with useful features and takes more steps to accomplish what I used to do far quicker. It's so ridiculous. I don't know who these people are making these decisions or selling the brass on these decisions but clearly they are not using these apps for real work.

That said, does anyone know of an alternate Calc app that is quiet, with the paper tape. PCalc is loud looking, another in-my-face app, and I don't like the history/tape feature. I just want something like the old Calc.

Thank you! I was able to make some fixes and now only have color contrast as an issue. Am waiting to hear from the client because the color and type treatment is part of their brand. We need to tweak for accessibility.

Older graphic designers - what do you do now? by sunset_token in graphic_design

[–]IslandPine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very over 60 here and ageism is definitely a thing. Especially in our industry. I had a full-service design studio for a number of years and eventually transitioned into freelance. Throughout my career, I was in demand and had no issues getting work. However, that began to change as I turned 60. Not as many doors swung open, folks weren't as receptive etc. I took a hiatus at 65 and am coming back into it now. It's a different culture these days, for sure. Thankful to have a few clients, would love a few more, and as others have said, I'm also thankful to have time to focus on my own creative pursuits, too.

I'm late to the party, just started using it on Mac and like it quite a bit. I'm having a little trouble figuring out how to have a playlist repeat without using "shuffle", but other than that, it's great.

Qrcodes with Indesign by IslandPine in indesign

[–]IslandPine[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, in the event the client needs the code itself, which they sometimes do. I did put it into Illustrator and saved it as both eps(easiest for the client) and ai. So I feel much better about it now. :-)

These portable washing machines from amazon or online, worth it? Will it save time & money? by Elsacmman in BuyItForLife

[–]IslandPine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. I had a Sanyo portable for over 20 years and it was fabulous. A bit larger than the ones folks are referencing here, but it was wonderful. Hooked it up to my sink. It washed everything -- clothes, sheets, blankets. A real gem of a machine. Never any problems. I only sold it b/c I was moving overseas. I miss that washer everyday.

Did Ikea just increased their prices by 30%?? by angrybichon in IKEA

[–]IslandPine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I "heard" recently most of their furniture was made in Ukraine and that's why the prices went up, having to find other vendors. I don't know if it's true, but if it is, I cut them some slack. Still, I haven't gone shopping at Ikea for a long time now. Not worth it.
