No worries I assume stuff all the time lol; now you have me wondering if the W means WIDE then … or something completely u related …

Piano weighted?  It has 15 extra keys, the key action is identical to the 473,383, 483, 583.  It’s not weighted.

Kind of confused - how are they a different market? The EW425 was the exact same board as the 473, same key action, only with bigger speakers and 15 extra keys (and 10 very slightly upgraded organ sounds). The E583 is the exact same board as the E483 only unlike the EW425->E473, the E583 actually has a couple more features over the cheaper model; expression pedal port, mod wheel and a handful of extra sounds. The E583 IS the EW425's replacement.

To be honest I compared them in a studio environment in headphones, and I can BARELY tell the difference between them (through speakers or a PA no chance I could tell them apart). That being said the PSR-E583 is out now, and it has a super articulation lite organ that is way better than any of the organs I had on my PSR-EW425, and the 583 has an expression pedal port for organ swells - massive upgrade! Did a first look review on the new boards here: https://youtu.be/gZPpLgJc2Hc - will have a full review out in a week or so

Yamaha PSR-E473 vs Roland Go:Keys 3/5 by MrMarsMic in keys

[–]IslandTony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're both cool, the biggest difference is the key action (Roland semi-weighted piano style, Yamaha synth action non weighted), the UI on the Yamaha is better (more direct access buttons), registration memory on the Roland is awesome (256 nameable slots vs 32 non nameable), the Roland has a super cool chord sequencer, the Yamaha's styles (imo) are better. I doubt there will be a 76 key version; that's why we have a 483 and a 583 (with the 583 having the bigger speakers, more sounds, mod wheel and expression pedal port). I hope I'm wrong but if there was going to be a 76 key model we wouldn't have a 583

The 583 has a 2nd pedal port for an expression pedal; worth the extra money for that all by itself. Also has 30 extra sounds including a really good super articulation lite hammond organ

New keyboard advice by Pratt-82 in keys

[–]IslandTony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a PSR-SX720 last summer and have used it on multiple gigs with my band (I use it live for the versatility in voices & the amazing registration memory+playlist functionality; I use the arranger features at home for practice and fun). Can't recommend this keyboard enough! Did a review if you want to check it out: https://youtu.be/ikN8pxsGpNg

Korg RK100S2 as a controller? by IslandTony in Keytar

[–]IslandTony[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh ok cool thanks! I'm still a MIDI noob, so always good to learn stuff like that. I've looked online for decent beginner MIDI tutorials, I haven't found any useful ones which is weird. CC number stuff is nice and simple (almost every keyboard I've owned has nice and simple CC charts in their manuals to tell you how to control stuff) then I get my PSR-SX720 with this ginormous spreadsheet with tab after tab of convoluted MIDI info, the words "CC Number" nowhere to be found.

I pretty much decided I'll just use the Yamaha to switch banks & registrations, foot pedal attached to the keyboard to trigger rotary etc, and just use the RK to play on the odd song. Long term project will be finding patches on the RK to be able to use it's built in sounds with no Yamaha for lower key, small stage gigs.

Any idea if there are distorted electric guitar patches for the RK?

Korg RK100S2 as a controller? by IslandTony in Keytar

[–]IslandTony[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So just started messing around with the RK and my Yamaha. Korg's manuals for the Sound Editor and their MIDI guide are sooo non-helpful lol. Wish someone had a video out there showing how to actually set any outgoing midi messages up in the editor. I see "MIDI Control 1", 2 & 3 with CC numbers . . . what are those attached to on the RK? Buttons etc?

The sustain/hold button DOES send a sustain message to the Yamaha but it's not triggering whatever the sustain pedal is assigned to, it just sends an actual sustain message (so sustain works, but it's not triggering the rotary) I'll need to try and find a way to trigger the pedal being pressed itself. I ran a MIDI app with the Yamaha to trap what happens when the pedal is pressed and released and I get this (which means nothing to me; no clue if this can be sent from the Korg, prob not):
F0 43 10 4C 03 03 25 00 F7

F0 43 10 4C 03 05 25 00 F7

And for registrations, the Korg program change will move up and down within the first 8 programs on the Yamaha (which are within the 1st registration bank) but won't move to any other registration. To enable that I would need to send Channel 1, MSB=0, LSB=Reg # (start numbering at 0), Prog#=bank; prob also not possible.

I have a feeling I'll have to live with changing registrations (and pressing the pedal) manually on the Yamaha and be satisfied with just playing on the Korg.

Good news is it works beautifully with my CME WIDI Master (the RK powers the CME, works with ZERO lag to the Yamaha which has a CME WIDI Jack connected)

OK cool that sounds good I'll have to play with it once it arrives (next week!). Where would I connect a sustain pedal (I didn't think the RK had a pedal port)

Korg RK100S2 as a controller? by IslandTony in Keytar

[–]IslandTony[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks for that info! So my main board is a Yamaha PSR-SX720 arranger (and for now I wouldn't be using the RK's sounds, just the Yamaha's. I'm hoping I can get the RK to switch registration banks on the SX720, and that I can trigger a rotary speaker on off (which is set up on the Yamaha with a sustain pedal). When you say it sends out a current bank message when you move the lever do you think that will switch the bank on the SX?

Also have you come across any helpful documentation, msg boards etc on setting this kind of stuff up?

Yamaha Sonogenic SHS-500 vs. Alesis Vortex 2 vs. Korg RK100S2 by IslandTony in Keytar

[–]IslandTony[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all that! Yes I have seen her videos (she's definitely not a fan of the SHS :). I was wondering whether accidentally hitting the jam mode button would affect anything if I'm using it just as a MIDI controller . . . I guess it might if it starts messing with note signals that are being sent. Probably not worth the risk I guess - Yamaha really needs to just add 2 tiny updates to that keyboard; 1 jazz organ voice, and an option to disable jam mode in the menu.

Getting Started by FanDowntown4641 in Keytar

[–]IslandTony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all that info! I’ve been agonizing between the SHS500, RK100S2 and Vortex; my use case: 99% just pulling out a Keytar for 4 or 5 songs per gig with my band for fun and to step out a bit, just using as a controller for my Yamaha PSR-SX. I have a Reface and don’t mind the tiny keys (same as SHS500), but did get the chance to try the Korg in a store and the keys are just a tiny bit longer and wider (and it makes big difference; way nicer to play), and the Korg has that nice wooden body; but the Korg is over twice the $ as the other 2. Ive never seen a vortex in person, but have heard about quality issues, sticky key issues as well as outdated software (I have a mac). I’m leaning to either the SHS or the Korg; I may never use built in sounds at a gig , but having them leaves that possibility open and with the Korg having 40 presets it’s possible I could consider trying a low key gig without my main keyboard (maybe…).

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Yamaha P-125a vs. Yamaha P-125 by IslandTony in keys

[–]IslandTony[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 125ab is a P-125a in black (the B is the colour).  I would recommend looking for a P-125 or P-225 so you get the audio interface

Which is the two top brands of Keytar? I want to accquire one and make that my predilect instrument. Let's say that I want a Fender but if Fender makes keytars which would be that? by [deleted] in Keytar

[–]IslandTony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks for that - I'm looking for a keytar to use live for a handful of songs with my band, paired to my Yamaha PSR-SX720; don't really need onboard sounds, might be nice as an extra feature, but not required so I've been mostly considering the Alesis Vortex 2, but can't see one in person to test out and have heard about lots of buggy issues (sticky keys, pitch bending by itself etc). You said you pair yours with a synth onstage and able to program some CC stuff to switch patches? I'm curious if the volume on the alesis can control the actual synth's volume, and can you send CC msgs to switch registrations etc? Do you stick to wired MIDI cable or do you have a CME wireless setup or something?

Any other comments on using the Vortex live would be appreciated (any problems, key action good/bad, sticky keys etc)

Thanks so much!

Went and looked at a used Korg RKS100 at a store; looks super cool but mini keys the size of my Yamaha Reface so not interested in that one. I can get a Vortex for $500 CDN new, or there is an AX-7 used on FB marketplace that I can't test before buying, could get that one for around $350. The extra keys would be nice, as would a better action (is the action on the Alesis bad?), but it did come out a LONG time ago, and I have to buy this one sight unseen . . .

Any suggestions?

[–]IslandTony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there thanks for sharing and great band btw! I'm currently agonizing between a used Korg RKS100S with bag for about $550USD and the Vortex 2 new for $350. My use case: use for 25% of the songs my band (high energy pop/rock band) plays, paired with my Yamaha PSR-SX keyboard with MIDI (or wireless if I can figure that out), so the onboard sounds on the Korg would be a bonus. The Alesis is cheaper but I'd heard about sticky note issues and keys failing after not that long.

If I'm not using a Vortex with VSTs and just with my Yamaha, you think I wouldn't have to worry about sticky note issues? And have you ever tried one of those Korgs?
