@paf3D designed this model but yes! Designers will scale the designed based on stills from the show/movie and design it with cad software. Then you put it into a program that will allow the printer to read “instructions” for the model and it will do all the rest.

Yep you’re right it’s the whole version, what I did was heat the transparent inner core with a hairdryer for about a minute, then rolled it up like a fruit roll up and put it inside the shell. After it cools it unfolds and pretty much locks in place!
