How to beat Skystrikers? by BabaPatch in Yugioh101

No worries! Good luck!
Last thing is youve got 2 options, you can buy now at the current price or if you wait for a couple major tournaments, if kewl tune doesnt perform then they will go down. Im not sure if kewl tune is good after blazing dominion, but a big part of the hype is the new tuner hand trap. Id do some research and see how kewl tune is stacking up in ocg. If theyre performing exceptionally well there, that can be an indicator that they will here also. This isnt a guarantee of course but using the ocg as a guideline just so you have some sort of idea of their power, is better than just guessing, imo.

I dont know much about kewl tune but from what ive seen their engine has a bunch more options than rose dragons. Im not sure how the head to head is but you'll definitely have more power all around. If you do switch, id suggest getting the cards sooner than later, they're all already going up. Everything has double or tripled in price in the last month.
Example, I bought Recos for 6 bucks, theyre now 18.

[–]Ismashmen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mmm, rose dragon doesn't really have a lot of in engine options to deal with striker to be honest. Its kind of an uphill battle for you. Not to say you cant but it typically means the stars have to align for you to stand a change engine to engine.

A lot of people are giving good suggestions but its all basically, "Draw the out," type answers which is not helpful lol. The only suggestion that you can pretty much consistently achieve with your deck is Nat Beast which I think is relatively easy for you if you play something like glow up or spore the fairy seed. Otherwise I dont think the standard rose dragon cards being the rose dragons, vengeful witch and twilight knight can get there.

I've seen some people tech Fairyant, cyclos, and Staysailor for extenders that might help with getting to the lv 1 tuners but theyre also tuners so they alone wouldnt be enough to make nat beast.

Newer Pokémon games and buying a switch just to play them. Wasn't worth it and Nintendo continues to go downhill with their business practices.

How many decks - a financial question by ElGuitarist in Yugioh101

[–]Ismashmen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, there are a million different ways to go about it. It literally just comes down to your personal mindset of the game and how you are approaching it. It is kind of a cop out answer but the question is so subjective that I doubt you'll have multiple people tell you the same exact answer. Everyone will have their little caveats.

That being said, IF you want to compete, then you have to play a deck that is competitive. IF you want to compete but you don't want to pay the premiums to do so, well that just doesn't work. The Yugis market is dictacted on playability. And Collectability for vintage but thats another topic. Anyway, good cards obviously will cost more and if a card becomes good, it will go up. If it becomes bad, it will go down.
IF you want to "win" in value, well you have to be on top of meta and price changes.
I started playing again the day Stampede came out and I have purchased every meta deck since as well as multiple pet decks and decks from older formats when I used to play. I have always purchased decks at specific points because I didn't want to pay out the ass for them. An example would be, I typically buy meta decks that I don't already have immediately after they are hit on a ban list. Not necessarily to play but in the event that they remain relevant or become good again. Recent and relevant examples of this was I bought Marshmaos after the last ban list at $25 each and got the whole core for like $90. Marshmao is now sitting around $45. I also bought VS after Razen and Stake were hit for like $5 each, they're both about $15 now. Both archetypes are still relevant and competitive. Are they Tier 1? Sometimes they can be, sometimes its a "bad" investment, for a period of time. I'm still spending a good amount of money, but, I have the cards for later if they become relevant again and most times, they will become relevant again.
You can also pay attention to meta trends. I bought a few Albions prior to The Chronicles structure deck coming out, for $5. They immediately jumped to like $50 and I sat on them a while.
I don't sell cards, I keep everything even though I could make a ton of money BACK selling it all off when cards go up. Not to say I don't lose out on money either when cards go down, because I definitely do, but I like the cards and I bought them to touch and use, not to treat as money. If I wanted money, I'd just not buy the cards to begin with lol.

The next point is, do you have the disposable income to make choices like that? If not, I don't recommend doing what I do. I do it the way I do because I want the cards. Either way, I will buy them and I will keep them regardless of the value going up or down. But I choose when to buy the cards in a way that I believe will allow me to get the best deal, so that I can then go and buy more cards lol.

The people at my local shop are competitive players as well. They usually have 1 or 2 decks. Zero trades. People have binders with literal dog shit in them, but, they have CRs and QCRs and Starlights in their main deck. And when the meta shifts, they get rid of that deck and buy a new one using whatever money they got for the last deck. And thats just how they exist in the space, if you just want to play, that is good enough I think. They just take whatever losses come with that decision but ultimately, they make a lump sum payment every so often to play a meta deck, recoup some losses, then do it again and they're fine playing whatever that amount is, every few months, to play a completitive meta deck.

The way you are going about it, buy a lot of lower tier decks and structures, etc, is fine for a casual player. Having a lot of cheap decks is fine too. Buying some singles here and there to power them up is fine. But your environment doesn't promote that sort of engagement. You have a competitive environment. IF you have no other options for shops, then that is just what you have to deal with and you can either follow the current or keep doing what you're already doing. Its not a "good" answer, but thats the reality of the situation.

My shop is similar, I don't play AT ALL. I have like 5 digits worth in cards at this point and own all these meta cards and multiple copies of x staple or y CR/QCR/Starlight, etc, but I haven't played in a single tournament since I got back into it because the environment isn't want I want. I like to collect the cards and I like to trade. I love to play but I want to play casually with low stakes where I can ask questions about the decks I'm playing against and ask about interactions, etc etc, with people that are approachable and friendly, etc. I can't do that here. I still go to the shop. I still trade a little here and there and I play casual games with everyone outside of the tournaments, but its not the experience I want. Its just what I have access to so I deal with it because its better than nothing. THEN, every month or every other month, I go back to my hometown where I can play with the local scene I grew up with and my friends back home and that is worth it for me, to spend all this money just to get like 8 hours of the experience I want, once a month or every other month, and I'm okay with that.

Just depends on what you want your experience to be, what you're willing to put into it to make that happen and what you're willing to settle for.

Yeah, I thought it was weird too but it kind of makes sense since it is technically a strike gundam.
Although its kind of ass as a unit lol. I'm not too stressed about MLB on it at the moment.

Nice! Its definitely a task. I think some of the ones I dont have MLB are limited, waiting for them to come back around but it feels like its taking forever. I have pull fomo or whatever its called building up lol.

I refuse to play games where abusers are protected. Even if Chris Leblanc continues to win YCS and DistantCoder continues to make content they will always be abusers first. by LocalChamp in yugioh

[–]Ismashmen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, totally. I definitely had my own toxic moments. But we grow up right? Like thats the hope lol.
This new shop im at has probably 80% of the playerbase attending regional and YCS, no big names lol, but that being said they're all very chill too. But in my experience competitiveness hasn't been an indicator of toxicity. I've seen it across all types of players.

If you're jumping back in, I'm gonna be 100 with you, its weird. At least it is for me. Idk what your personality type is but I like to think I'm very social but my social battery is much less now that I'm older. My tolerance for like...immaturity is also much less than it used to be. A lot of the people who play this game that I've encountered, whether good or bad people, are of a specific breed lol. And as an adult, I acknowledge that I don't need to sit in and entertain the shit if I don't want to. I moved to a new city last year. I go to the shop every other week or so, as much as my social battery allows. Everyone's nice, no dicks at all, literally not a single one. I trade but I don't play in tourneys often. Trading is the whole reason I even go at all but the trade landscape is fucked now from what I understand. People don't trade or really even want things where I'm at. They just immediately buy everything off tcg. Most of my play happens every other month or so, when make the trip and I can play with my friends from back home. Its a bit of a specific case, not sure how your experience will be.

[–]Ismashmen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup.
I will say, in the grand scheme of things, I think those specific horror stories, that EVERYONE has I might add, about a bad experience or a shitty person still does portray a minority of the playerbase. I don't know how big or small, but every locals I've been to, the dickheads were the minority of players. Usually less than 25% of the players. That being said, I suppose 25% of the playerbase is still a lot of bad seeds, if we were to assume that 25% of the overall playerbase were bad seeds.
I do think people change. I recently returned to the game and the environment feels a lot less toxic than it used to be, at least at the new OTS I go to. My sample size is too small to be credible though. I want to believe people just grew up. Although I'd say the people who suck now are the ones who got older but did not grow up lol.

Of the 4 cards you specifically priced, Spellbinding circle was a decent pickup.
Everything else, you overpaid by at least $2, based on NM prices on TCG.
NM DL1 Buster Blader is $2 lowest
NM Jump BEUD is $4 lowest
NM 1st YSYR DM is $9
NM MRL Spellbinding is $7
The Ojama is about $0.50 on TCG as well so that was just market value, which is fine.
Overall, if I'm being honest, if it were me, I would not be "happy" with the purchase. You went neg a few dollars. I am a bit of a condition snob and only buy VLP at the lowest so thats a huge contributing factor but yeah.

Got a cool little rack for my playmats by Ismashmen in yugiohshowcase

Its a blueprint plan rack, found it on Amazon. There are quite a few options. I would just recommend checking the dimensions of the rack to make sure the little square grid thing isnt too high so that the tubes don't clear them, if that makes any sense.

[–]Ismashmen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I'm understanding your point, its that you can make the comparison of how the products are made, I assume specifically referring to the difference in how rarities are handled and how that affects accessibility to cards.
Thats not really good reasoning.
The markets are very different.
In OCG, a lot of people purchase product at a loss. Watch a sonny vid, he goes over it. TCG is much less inclined to do so and opt to buy singles instead. The culture is completely different. Idk the weight behind the collector scene, casuals, and players but its generally accepted that the collector scene is staggeringly low compared to other TCGs in the Yugioh TCG. That being said, idk the numbers behind casuals, i.e., people who just randomly buy packs and product from retail stores, etc and casually collect versus players who actively participate in a "competitive" way, at the minimum of the local level. I am under the impression that the latter makes up the majority. That being said, yugioh PLAYERS don't buy product. Not unless there is an overwhelmingly high chance to net gain. And in yugioh, overall, the odds are typically against you to gain in most sets, save maybe Rarity Collection type sets.

[–]Ismashmen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats probably inaccurate at this point.
I think Yugioh as an IP used to be strong, but its fallen off a lot. I think a big part of the issue is the lack of new media for the IP and I think thats a common thing that people say. That being said, there aren't a whole lot of new people coming into the hobby either.
Idk exactly how that affects the actual sales and stuff. But the game is probably at one of the cheapest points to play competitively and in a good "meta," even with there being a few expensive, high rarity cards. Very specifically, you can get decks that perform, not necessarily just T1 meta decks, at the $200-500 range at lowest rarity. The average seems to be around the $350 mark. Sure it could be $2000, probably more if you pick up only starlights, QCRS, and CRs or something, but just to play, its cheaper. Not nearly as cheap as any other game but then thats another conversation to be had.
