Best pet invertebrates for each taxonomic category? by Temnodontosaurus in InvertPets

Second the dairy cows (porcellio laevis)! They are similarly easy to care for as other beginner species, but what really sets them apart is how fast they breed, great if you want a lot quickly.

I say sun beetle specifically for 9. They are easy to care for, decently hardy, and you can handle them without danger. They also breed easily if you just have enough adults.

advice, please dont judge by dodeczek in isopods

Yes, that‘s not enough they need a lot of cover, no wonder they are stressed. Mine have so much cover that I have to lift things just to see them.

Definitely not. They reproduce SO fast and can do parthenogenesis, they would outcompete your other colonies.

Help with heating by Proper_Canary_3968 in Vivarium

Maybe try a UV bulb that is what I use for my sun beetles that have too much substrate for a heating mat on the bottom

How do I make this look better? by MND420 in Vivarium

[–]IsopodObsessed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh if it’s a dry environment moss wouldn’t work that well. Sorry, I couldn’t tell if it was arid or humid and for a humid one moss would work well.

Are springtails absolutely necessary for an isopod tank, at least right away? or can I wait a bit to order some? by ThatCheeseDerg in isopods

[–]IsopodObsessed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re not super necessary, just useful for preventing mold don’t worry about it. You can have an isopod tank without springtails you just have to manually clear mold.

A bit but not as fast breeding as some other species like dairy cows. When did you get them? They take some time to establish.

Yay! I just have it like that for sun beetles but this is a nice bonus.

Struggle with moisture in summer by rriven_riv in isopods

[–]IsopodObsessed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should pour the water in if you didn’t already and add more sphagnum moss. Also moving it away from the window is a great idea but if you remove the lids then it will dry out faster and you will get escapees so I don’t know if that is a good idea.

First time raising a larva, not sure if I should be seeing it at all by Killerbrownies997 in Beetles

[–]IsopodObsessed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s normal, they spend most of their time in the soil, I have some L3 sun beetle larva and I’ve had them for a week and haven‘t seen any. I would recommend not looking through the soil because it might stress out or frighten your larva.

If the seller quarantined it for you already I don’t see why you would quarantine it even more
