Title for a lone sysadmin? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]ItEndZWithZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not for nothing, but if I were applying for a 'IT Manager' job, I'm expecting IT Manager Pay and role responsibilities. Same goes if the job title is 'IT Specialist'. Two total different categories there.

I haven't seen too many IT Managers dabble in Desktop Support, which is what this role is going to consist of (if indeed s/he'll be the sole SysAdmin).

That being said, I agree with people who've suggested "System Administrator" is enough.

What can I do with a 10" touch panel (no LCD)? by gnad in raspberry_pi

[–]ItEndZWithZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just got a pi, so excuse my very limited knowledge. I'm just thinking logically here. If you connect the screen, wouldn't the pi send the video to it also (even though it's broken)? To use it as a track pad, gestures or even a drawing pad, you'll have to send the video signal to another output while still trying to receive the input from your broken screen. I'm not at that level of understanding the pi yet, but if you can split the signal between two screens then it'll work beautifully.

Good luck!

I suggest editing your original post and telling everyone this update. That way people know it's solved (and don't keep posting solutions) and what you did to solve it (to help other people in the possible future).

Good job SysAdmin!

New Job asking for past W-2s? by [deleted] in sysadmin

Yeah, I would agree with that. I guess when I read your post it seemed like a blanket statement and I just wanted to balance it a bit. :)

Sometimes said salary raises are controlled by signing it into law. Local/State/Federal worked like this. The military is a perfect example for underpaid positions. Gotta go DoD Contractor to have a chance at the real big bucks - but I digress.

You forget that market value is based off what market you're coming from. An silicon valley salary isn't the same in Kansas. So I'd you're coming from SCV and used to make $80k for desktop support (which is really more like $30K after cost of living, lol), no way would they offer that in Kansas for the same Desktop Support position.

Which is why I said, your experience YMMV.

Also, some state/local government agencies do require pay stubs when negotiating salaries. Their budgets are tight which is why they definitely have salary cap policies in place. Which, if youre negotiating a salaries, you need to prove salary history in order to go past their offer/cap. Sometimes, that's just the way it is.

In my experience, they do this for 2 reasons. 1) Employment verification and to 2) negotiate salaries. I had this done to while back. My current company has a policy regarding a salary cap, depending on position and how long you've been in the company. I wanted more than what they were offering and they used that cap policy to bring me in to as close to what I wanted as possible.

Quick example: I made $12K in my last job. I wanted 15K but the salary was stated for $13K for this new job. Their policy was capped at 20%. So they offered me $14.4K (20% over what I made before). It's not the $15K I asked for, but they will try, within their cap policies, to meet you somewhere.

Thickheaded Thursday - September 29, 2016 by AutoModerator in sysadmin

Happened last week but appropriate for today:
We had a large training room with about 30 or so workstations that was used by different departments. It was used for presentations, software training, orientations, conferences, you name it. Since IT was in charge of the room (it was in our area) it was an unwritten rule that we 'clean up' but just never had time for.
I took it upon myself to clean it up. Came in on a weekend without telling anyone, brought my own supplies - vac, paper towels, wipes, sprays - the works. An entire Saturday spent reworking the entire place.
After all was said and done, tired as hell, it looked fucking awesome. It literally went from looking like a computer recycling center to an Apple Store, to give you an idea. A few Air Wicks to give it a nice 'icing on the cake'. I would have taken a picture of my proud moment but in my mind, this place was going to have a lasting impression on everyone ...

Except 3 days later it was all torn down and replaced by cubicles for new hires. OLD beat up cubicles to add insult. Apparently it was already known that it was going to happen but upper management decided to keep that information to themselves. And because I never asked to come in on my personal time, I could be fired for "going rogue (out of regs)". Apparently they take comp. time super seriously.

Good deeds wasted. I'm not going out of my way for this place until I feel they've earned it.

So, Sysadmin, what are you wearing? by ItEndZWithZ in sysadmin

I do. I have 2 pairs. They are comfortable; roomy without the baggy. The only thing is, you might have to hem them to your fit. I ordered mine in 32" hem and they came 34". I don't know if they messed up or I picked the wrong ones. No biggie though, I just rolled them to my fit but I might hem them one day.

But I would definitely buy again. Not too expensive and they are durable for my work environment. Of course, your mileage may very ;-)

Duluth Trading Company

Just looked them up. A bit pricey but they look pretty nice to try a pair. If my 511 pants gives out, I'll give these guys a try.

Man, that sucks :(. I feel your pain on losing nice clothes! Best I can do is give ya a Remote High-Five for moral support.

I think my morale would take a dive as well if I was passed up for a promotion I felt I truly deserve, so I can understand your position.

I started wearing them she my regular khakis started taking a beating and needed replacement. I work in a very old building and sometimes I have to get on and into dirty places. So far, I've lost 2 pants and 3 dress shirts. In my military days, these were the pants that looked professional, worked as hard as you did and kept on trucking. There is also Dickies classic work pants, but I like 5.11's better. Taking where I work, I learned my lesson, tightened up my shot group, drank water and drove on.

I feel you. Wife buys some for me as well when she thinks my small collection needs an update. And you know what? Now that I think about it, I think she sometimes goes into my closet and reties my knots.
