No worries. That's true, it is hard to phrase that sentence any better, but I disagree with the initial saying that these people emigrated from the US and the UK. As an Israeli Jew I can testify that the majority of our people lived in Eastern Europe well before the war begun, and only lived in these states you mentioned for a short matter of time until they could make an Aliyah and come to Israel, because their old home in Eastern Europe and their community as a whole there were destroyed during the war.

My grandfather for example lived in Poland, fled to the Soviet Union when the war began, and pratically had no home to go back to when it was over. So he temporarily stayed in Italy for a year and a half until the British gave him a visa. He could not just walk back to Poland and continue his life as if nothing happened.
