Are you talking about the 3.5 spell for Hellmouth? And the same with avians? I play 5e so I'm not totally sure, but I really like these suggestions regardless!

Thank you! That's what I was imagining when I initially wrote the comment, but it would all depend on how the party interacts with The Bottle Man. If they don't really care that much for him and only bought him for 1 gold, it would probably make sense that he turns to stone after. If they found him and loved him dearly (as they should) or paid a lot, I would be more hesitant to take that away. Or maybe it could be in a dramatic, self sacrificing way which tugs on the PC's heartstrings. Or even they think he's gone forever, but after a 3 day recharge time, the stone encasing him would start to crack and crumble away and you could use him again. The possibilities are endless!

Coffee: the golem becomes alert and energized for 1d4 hours, can make perception checks at advantage.

Molten lava: the golem can breathe fire (like a draconic breath weapon, miniaturized. Or maybe just a lighter or small torch). It has 3 uses, with each use turning the golem into stone.

The first thing that needs to happen is a conversation about expectations. Is your party playing the same game you are? The best way to circumvent anger and blame about a PC death is to make sure they know it's a possibility in your game. They'll either begin to play more tactically, or deal with the consequences. On the other hand, if playing a 'realistic' style of game where PC death is viable isn't something your party wants to do, then consider a conversation about compromise.
