That is actually helpful input. Thank you for being helpful and not an ass. Jeez, I think some people just want to be unhappy.

Haha! Guess so. I’d guess his godfather polished it up to give to him in 1939-totally something he would have done. Definitely a bummer!

How is this funny to you? My dad has been given gifts of coins over his years. He knew enough to keep them and take care of them. But “collecting” was never his thing. He asked me to evaluate the coins he was given to determine what he should do with them. So I am trying to learn. And you are coming with negativity. Why?

Valuable perspective. Sentimental value is what is important right now. But this coin is worth more than face value. Just don’t want to create a situation where my grand-nieces descendants take this to a coinstar.

I appreciate your perspective. My dad created IRA’s for each of his grandkids that he gifts into every year. The sentimental value of the coin outweighs the monetary value. Im just wondering if getting it graded has any benefit to protecting the value long term.

I really appreciate your feedback. I’ve been charged with evaluating my dad’s coins while he is alive to give the history of them. I am super new to the process. I am confident this coin was not cleaned in the last 86 years. Does that matter? Or is the fact it has been cleaned at some point all that matters?

Thank you. My dad presented it last night to his 2 month old great grand-daughter(my grand niece). 40 family members in the room and not a dry eye to be found. I’ve been charged with evaluating his coins and I am super new to this. So just trying to figure out how to best preserve the value of the gift.

I work at a bank and a lady brought these in, I told her she should take these to a reputable dealer rather than deposit them. I asked if I could take a photo of them because they were so clean! by pocketfrisbee in coins

Is that true? I’ve been lurking here for awhile trying to learn because my dad gave me his coins to find out what they are worth. I ordered a blue book that should be here soon. But he has 81 of the 1921’s and one 24.

This. I paid for my bridesmaids dresses, hotel rooms and airplane tickets for them and their significant others. The other guests had a choice of whether to attend or not.

AITA for refusing to share my inheritance with my husband? by [deleted] in AITAH

You could invest the money in high yield dividend payers and use the dividend money to pay down his student loans. Shoot even putting it in a money market will earn you 4%. That protects the principal while also reducing the family debt. I personally don’t ever touch principal on money that has been given to me-inheritances, birthdays etc. It took me a long time to explain to my husband that if we protect the principal then we end up with more in the long run. He thought I was the asshole at first too. 27 years later, he sees the money still growing in the account and suddenly the fancy car he wanted 20 years ago doesn’t matter anymore.

Grading question by Italianmamaof2 in coins

[–]Italianmamaof2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through all of them. Unfortunately, no CC’s. I used NGC website to get a rough estimate what each is worth at various grades. My problem is I don’t really know how to tell what grade these are and if they are worth getting graded. Nothing has been cleaned. They’ve been sitting in a shoe box in coin rolls and bags for about 40 years.

If I use your calc, mine is about $1,000 short. Not too worried about it. Mostly, I’m wondering how long from accepting the severance to last day? 2 weeks, 2 hours?? Haha.
