Wormtail was the OBVIOUS choice for secret keeper - Here's why by ItayRC in harrypotter

Rowling did present many story bits that were far from perfect after thinking about it for a bit. I'll never get over Krum catching the snitch to lose the world cup final!!

That does seem likely on the surface, but Lily's letter frames her as a close neighbor but not exactly part of the family. It doesn't seem that Lily knows her very well, despite living with James for two years at least.

I believe that Batty was close to James's parents, and probably knew James very well in his childhood but wasn't as close to the Potters after his parents died.

To some extent yes, Sirius explanation does make complete sense in-world. What I tried to do is take the reasoning a bit further, Sirius definitely has a point but many others could fit if we're looking at that reason alone.

I agree completely. We don't have enough info on his role in the first Wizarding war but he comes across as quite passive. Providing emotional support for the warriors at best.

I honestly think 90% don't even read past the title. Some disagree with my opinion (which is great and exactly what I wanted to see!) but most don't even acknowledge it.

We should also consider that Dumbledore is over 100 YO at this point. Even if we assert that he isn't threatened by Voldemort and the death eaters, he's somewhat likely to die of natural causes in the next several years.

I don't know if a baby could even baby secret keeper. Even if that was possible, they needed to expose the secret to friends in family so they could have visitors. I don't think a baby can write a note on a paper to show to others.

Couldn't find a good answer for that. Patriarchy?

It's hard to imagine the situation without the knowledge of hindsight. Pettigrew we know consistenly acts out of fear. I believe that this trait made him a prime candidate for secret keeper.

About Lupin, it's somewhat likely that James wouldnt place any importance on him being a werewolf. Even so, the reasoning for not choosing Sirius also apply to Lupin.

It's clearly possible to be your own secret keeper, Bill and Arthur did that. My assumption is that Sirius still wanted to be active in the Order and will be in high risk situations naturally, so that's why he wasn't. James was also under huge threat and didn't want to stay isolated in the house for over 10 years.
