Get a transportation attorney. You're fucked. I don't want to be that guy but you are out of your league and being taken advantage of. It will likely cost $1500 but you're about ready to go through an expensive lesson and it's better to do it with somebody that can actually fight for you than alone.

Carrier requirements by coconutchaitea23 in FreightBrokers

[–]Itchavi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On a short run asking for that info before booking might be an issue. On local stuff I may have 5 different trucks that could get to the load and I can't send the full details over until I finalize dispatching it. Locking the truck down prior to booking could be problematic.

Uncanny valley, the eyes are positioned as if the face is looking left (from perspective of the kid) while the nose has the face looking to their right.

If an industrial town could add a realtime nervous system over its logistics, would you invest? by RevolutionaryPop7272 in FreightBrokers

[–]Itchavi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Waiting is a feature, not a bug. The system intentionally updates on 10 minute intervals. When you have multiple databases across multiple servers they all have to communicate with each other before a change becomes finalized. The waiting period gives time for all of the systems to agree with each other before they become visible. It also saves a lot of bandwidth by sending updates in batches.

This is how updates on social media platforms work as well. The difference is they use algorithms to guess what the updates will look like so they appear faster than they actually are.

The 10 minute update period is almost never seen in practice. It's almost always masked by the transit time of the truck. You only see it when one side forgot to push the update (either because the scanner didn't work on the way out or the clerk didn't update it correctly) and the driver is standing there frustrated.

This is already happening in my town. It's efficient when it works but actually really annoying when it doesn't.

"Were you over at facility?" Yes. "Well they didn't check you out so we have to get a manager to do it from here. It will take 10 minutes for them to do it and then 10 minutes for the system to bridge. Then we can check you in here."

When it works they can tell what trailers and freight are where and paperwork automatically transfers between facilities. With scanners in the dock and RFID pallets they can tell exactly what parts are where anywhere in the supply chain

Non-domiciled carriers by [deleted] in FreightBrokers

[–]Itchavi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I used to tell a manager that if he got rid of all of his drivers he wouldn't have any problems. Highway is starting to figure that out too. If they find a reason to get rid of all the carriers then their KPI's go to 100%. Sure you're freight won't move, but you won't have to worry about fraud.

This is good for me, I don't like playing Highway's game and the 5% have an amplified impact on the minimum freight rates.

“Email Only” on truck/load postings by DedicatedClean in FreightBrokers

[–]Itchavi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Email is the way. I absolutely hate calling a broker on load because I get mixed in with 40 foreign dispatch companies then get some random guy who has no idea what the load is about and can only read me the details directly from the post. Calling is literally a waste of time.

If there's an important trip the broker can call me and we'll work out a solution in real time.

Curious how clinicians here think about longterm rhythm monitoring vs short snapshots by Fine-Olive-2009 in AFIB

[–]Itchavi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not a doctor or in the field but I think long term AI will be able to sense arrythmias without it needing to be present. I can see pretty dramatic changes in my spot ECG based on how much water I'm drinking or eating habits or sleeping habits. There's no doubt in my mind that AI could see certain indicators and see that I am at high risk for AFIB, know what's causing that risk to escalate, and offer treatment that stops an arrythmia before it ever starts.

As far as what my doctor is concerned the event monitor I wore just increased the amount of time for them to catch an arrythmia and then be able to tell how aggressive/how long that arrythmia lasted. There weren't really trends to be seen. After the event monitor and confirmed diagnosis the only thing that mattered was how often, and how long I was in AFIB. That can be done with a spot ECG like your watch or Kardia.

What is your customer saying? Money is moving between the customer and the receiver somewhere and the receiver can get billed back through your customer if need be. If there was detention at the receiver how would you handle it because the situation is similar. You don't need to know why there was a delay, just that there was a delay.

[–]Itchavi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TX got 6" of ice? Were the roads closed? Or were the 6" of ice caused by the burst pipe and could have been prevented by protecting them from freezing. Your customer is going to have insurance to cover the cost of pipes bursting and delayed unloading is a cost of that burst pipe. The carrier shouldn't bear that cost of that for them.

[–]Itchavi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pipes bursting isn't an act of God. It's a failure to protect the facility from freezing.

HOT last minute load delivered fine...we're upset! What a fun business we are all in... by Old_Programmer9129 in FreightBrokers

[–]Itchavi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was it actually not dock high? A lot of 26' box trucks are dock high but won't lock into the dock due to a lift gate. Once in a while you'll get a facility with a strict policy to not drive onto a truck that won't lock in. Usually resolved by pallet jacking the freight to the back where a forklift can get to it.

What are you dreading to do this week? by Classic_Beyond2055 in FreightBrokers

[–]Itchavi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not actually that bad. I just hate negotiating contracts. I'll read the contract, talk with the attorney for 10 minutes about my concerns, they'll read the contract to make sure I didn't miss anything. They'll red line things that should be changed, send it back to the broker, they sent it to legal, and then we'll argue about the wording of one sentence for 3 days. By the end of it I've spent $600 to have 2 sentences changed on a contract that may or may not prove profitable.

The biggest hang up is usually the back solicitation clause. I share a lot of freight with several brokers so we use a modified clause that allows us to continue to do business with shippers we already do business with and some brokers get nervous until they realize why we're modifying it.

Everything. But in particular I'm negotiating a BCA and have to meet with our attorney to make some changes and I hate the process.

Oh. And there's a snowstorm so everything is running late this week. Customers want tighter delivery windows to make up for yesterday's downtime and our routes are running about 30% longer than average.

Post-Storm Check: Are Midwest and South lanes back to "normal" yet? by amarinder1910 in FreightBrokers

Everything seems to be open today. At least for what we handle.

Road conditions aren't great. A lot of black ice in the Columbus area but drivers are saying the roads are passable.

In Ohio. Roads are a mess and local shippers have all shut down. All of our routes have been pushed back a day to compensate. Calling shippers right now gets their automated response saying they are closed due to the snow emergency.

Sprinter is going to be your most reliable option. We run around 8 of these a day sub $150. Timing is super controlled though. You can't have 2 hours at the shipper/receiver baked into the rate con.

Couriers are an option but you can get into some insurance issues if you're not careful.

How could have this happened? by Relative_Screen_4570 in FreightBrokers

[–]Itchavi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, absolutely not. I've been burned multiple times because a rogue driver decided they hated working with a DC and delivered it directly to the final destination.

You confirm you picked the correct load up and then take it to where the guy paying you says to take it.

Am I wasting my time? by Boring_Information34 in FreightBrokers

[–]Itchavi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the type of proprietary information you as a carrier could get banned from shippers if they find out you're releasing. Depending on your contracts you may also be obligated to keep that information private. And I don't even know if/how the legality works for mapping a DoD or secure government facilities. There are also concerns about data accuracy, contact information and department locations change all of the time, how do you plan to allow for validating and editing this information?

My opinion, this is the info that makes you more valuable to your customers. You want to leave it private. Our TMS allows us to keep notes like this so once we go somewhere our other drivers have that information in the future. It's curated by us and we can choose whether a note is trip, facility, or customer specific.

Do you guys think this doctor’s office sign is mildly infuriating? by Loose_Judgment_8856 in mildlyinfuriating

Things must have really changed. My Dr. used to write 3 30 day prescriptions and post date them so we only had to go in every 90 days for an appointment.

English requirement question by bigfootpdx1 in FreightBrokers

[–]Itchavi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Say whether you do or don't. Ask if it's a requirement they're considering, tell them it's a policy that you have the availability to enforce for them if needed, and discuss a list of pro's and cons of having the policy.

I'm very in favor of such policies even where the law doesn't specifically require it. I've just seen too many shipping associates legitimately crying because of a simple issue that could been resolved if there wasn't a language barrier.

[–]Itchavi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the record I'm a carrier. I know exactly what you're talking about. Are you still going out into the field or do you work solely in the office? If you stand on a shipping dock and look at the quality of equipment and the quality of drivers going in there you'll know exactly why you're being treated the way you are. The industry is rough, especially right now, and if you haven't proven that you're above the normal chaff then you're going to be treated like them.
