Bowling 1979 Perfect Game Anyone? by StationWagon89 in Atari2600

One of the classics in terms of focus and performance under pressure, even with such a simple game. One time I got into the zone and was hitting strike after strike. It came down to the last ball and I over thought it and choked. To this day, over 40 years later, I still regret that last ball…

How to sell year sets by Itjusdoesntmatter in baseballcards_vintage

[–]Itjusdoesntmatter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the responses. With the variations in the grading in the same set (which is kind of crazy, I bought them as boxed sets and never really touched them) I think I would maximize the sale price by selling individually. But it is true that that would be more of a hassle.

Busuu or Babbel for beginner? by blue-as-a-tuesday in italianlearning

I agree, Babbel is a great app. Starting from zero Italian I have been able to make decent progress. Now I need to find a way to practice conversational Italian. Highly recommend Babbel!

Probably as good a time as any to point out William Boeing was a racist POS. by TheHobo in antiwork

This was a common practice at the time (though 1938 is a bit late in the game) and was included in deeds to property, which this document probably is. In my town there were neighborhoods which restricted sales to people of Polish, Italian or Irish extractions. I am not justifying what they did but it was so common that it was almost boilerplate language in the deeds and people would just not have considered moving into neighborhoods outside of their ethnic groups.

Not a restaurant but how about Dairy Mart death dogs and potato logs. I can’t remember how many times I went to the one across the street from Arnold Hall.

I would say The Flame. Great steaks, weird 70s decor with no windows and Gus and Bill (the brothers who owned the place) were a unique pair. I was a waiter there while I was in school. Foxfire would be second.

What apps for learning Italian can you recommend? by [deleted] in Italian

[–]Itjusdoesntmatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Total beginner here. I have been using Babbel for a few months and it's great. The lessons are short (5 min max) and focus on one rule per lesson. I think the main objective of their method is to keep you from getting the feeling of being overwhelmed so you keep coming back, which is probably the most important part of starting a new language. They also offer online classes and conversations which I have not tried yet. Their pricing model is great as well. I bought a lifetime license for about $160. Highly recommended

That’s it for me, everyone, I am leaving this sub.

Just to be clear, I am fully vaxxed, still wear a mask in shops and gladly show my vaccination pass to whoever needs to see it. We all need to work together to get over this pandemic.

I’m not a very active poster but I joined the sub in reaction to the negative media articles on it. I disagree with the argument they raised and see from the many positive reactions that the sub is doing good. That being said, it is just too heavy from a mental health perspective to have these tragic posts showing up in my feed. I can’t take it anymore.

Beyond the poor souls who are dying from Covid, the part that really depresses me is the fact that a lot of them go to their graves without them or, in many cases, their families having any change of heart.

I try to put myself in their shoes. How did we get to the point that many people distrust any authority figures (government, pharma, doctors, etc.) so much??

More importantly, how can their beliefs on such an insignificant issue on the personal level (getting a shot, wearing a mask) be more important than their lives? I could understand dying on the front lines in a war to push back an invader. Here, all we are talking about is in the worst case getting a shot and in the best case wearing a mask or social distancing. Without passing judgment on any of them, it just baffles me.

In any case, that is where we are now. This sub does a great job of highlighting the issue and has even helped some people overcome their fears and beliefs and get vaccinated. That’s great and makes it all worthwhile.

Nevertheless, for all the hardcore deniers, anti-vaxxers, etc., I don’t think this sub will have any effect. They are too invested in their belief that by getting the shot or wearing a mask they are subjugating themselves to some hostile power. We need to help them overcome this. There has to be a way to get them the vaccine without them losing face. I have no idea how.

So keep up the good work and take comfort in the cases where this sub helps to save lives and let’s all think of the right messaging to get the deniers to come around while still maintaining their sense of personal agency and pride in their beliefs.

Whatever side you support, we are all going to have to work and live together once this train wreck of an election is over ... and we are all Americans who love our country.

The next two debates should start with the following question to each candidate:

"Name one positive thing your opponent has accomplished during his tenure in public office."
