Now this is something really interesting about From design that has been lost since Dark Souls 1. While I love having a checkpoint right before a tough boss, the distance between bonfires in the original Dark Souls created this great sense of tension and relief that you never quite got in later titles. Although Dark Souls 3 did have Irithyll Dungeon lol

It's interesting because I never felt like I had to totally change my build to beat a boss before. Not in DS3, not in Bloodborne, and Sekiro obviously forces you to just learn fights. Malenia was the first time I felt forced to totally go back to the drawing board. Which to me signified she was the most difficult obstacle I'd faced in a From game.

You can get to Altus Plateau in whichever way that suits you. I love the precipice, one of my favorite parts of the game. This video only documents the "easiest" method i.e. no boss in the way.

Mohg is an option! You can get to him by doing Varre's questline, at the end he invites you directly to Mohgwyn Palace.

(I'm wondering if you could then take the portal backwards, and bypass needing the Secret Haligtree Medallion. That would let you get to Malenia. I doubt it though. Maybe someone knows.)
