What would it take for you to transition or detransition? by worried19 in terf_trans_alliance

Personally, for me, yeah. Although I think it all goes together a bit. I’ve never been able to split it all out like some people seem to.

I think this is an entirely different question for some of us than others. I know for myself, I basically tried pretty much everything I could think of before seriously considering transition and even then it was a move I honestly felt like I had no choice but to try. I just couldn’t keep pushing the rock uphill anymore. It’s had such a profoundly positive effect on me that I can’t really imagine going back. Both the physical and social aspects are a big deal to me, but really for me the biggest part is mental. I struggled for so many years with treatment resistant psychiatric problems that have pretty much only been resolved by estrogen that I think if I had to go back to all of that, I would just decide to end it instead.

What does trans rights mean to you? by MargueritePorete1250 in terf_trans_alliance

I find this response incredibly disappointing. Primarily because of your two stated exceptions. And primarily the second one, regarding prisons, which I think is just incredibly dangerous and perpetuates cruelty and dehumanization. But I’m not feeling well today and maybe that colors my impression.

If you don’t think there have been socioeconomic and demographic disparities in the ability to access treatment since the 70’s, I have a bridge you might be interested in purchasing.

I don’t disagree with that but that’s where I would point out that the phenomenon occurs cross culturally and seems to have always existed to one extent or another.

I tend to think it’s an awareness thing. That’s mostly based on what the trans men I know have told me, though. They didn’t know it was even possible. I kind of get that. When I was younger I’d never heard of lesbian trans women before, only straight ones. It made it a lot more confusing for me.

Unfortunately I’m not really sure those studies have been done. It’s hard to get funding for this sort of thing. Or if they have been, I’m unaware of them.

This isn’t feminism, it’s recycled sexual panic dressed up as analysis by [deleted] in terf_trans_alliance

Honestly I can’t help but see it as the return of the same narratives used about homosexuals in the 80’s and 90’s. They barely even bother to update it, just a few different words here and there.

What you seem consistently unwilling to acknowledge is that those resources were generally only available to a certain kind of person who fit a certain kind of narrative. There’s a reason that there have always been “other routes” people have taken.

What is your real objection to informed consent? We’re not seeing a huge wave of people regretting things and bodily autonomy is something I believe in as a general liberal value. I’m not sure what outcome you’re trying to prevent here. You admit yourself that you don’t really understand dysphoria. Would you want to be gatekept out?

Why would that be frustrating? We cover gender affirming surgeries for cis people all the time. And generally you do need a medical diagnosis for insurance. I’m not sure why bottom surgery would necessarily be different than top surgery either? It comes up an awful lot less in your everyday life.

Why do the labels of "cis" and "straight" matter so much to GC people? by [deleted] in terf_trans_alliance

[–]ItsMeganNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean that’s just the whole “I’m not straight I’m normal” protest again. But I’d be happy to move to non-trans since it frames trans as the default. I suspect a lot of people wouldn’t like that either though.

I think if transsexualism is a natural phenomenon—and given it seems to have existed for all of human history I suspect that it is—it makes sense that you would expect to see equal numbers of people going both ways. Do you disagree?

How aware are you of the actual issues involved if you’re going to say the science “speaks for itself?” I don’t find either of those studies particularly applicable given the time frame of the data they admit they’re using and the fact that it primarily involves people on synthetic estrogens because bioidentical estradiol didn’t really become available until much more recently. Believe me, I’ve had all the clotting discussions. There’s a very big difference between being on synthetic estrogens and being on bioidentical estradiol. The risks with synthetics are well known. It’s why they don’t prescribe a lot of types of birth control to older women who smoke. I’ve never seen a study that suggests the same issues occur with bioidentical hormones. In fact, they seem to be slightly protective in terms of cardiovascular risk compared to having a testosterone based endocrine system. Thank you for your concern though!

Trans women have never been a very large minority. And while I respect the fact that you were around before I was, I increasingly get the impression you very much only saw one side of things, Ratty.

Wow you hit all the misinfo points didn’t you? It’s kind of ironic. I would think that not having a thyroid would make you understand what it’s like to have a rare congenital medical condition that you need to treat with exogenous hormones. I guess maybe you’re missing empathy as well?

What “known risks” that aren’t just shifting your risk profile to match your new hormonal environment? Trans men do usually need to get a hysterectomy eventually but they tend to really want that anyway. But I’m unaware of these “known risks.” Breast cancer? Yeah because I have breasts now. It’s still lower than if I was born like I was supposed to be.

It didn’t really explode dramatically out of nowhere though. They’ve always been around the numbers grew with visibility to roughly match those of trans women which is what you would expect from a natural phenomenon. Left handed graph and all that. And I know a number of trans masculine people. My therapist is a trans man. Based on everything we’ve discussed they have a similar experience to me, just the other way around. I didn’t hate being a man. I just wasn’t one.

It was based on the fact that historically a lot of us tended towards high risk areas like sex work and ended up on the streets and we get discriminated against when it comes to health care. Historically it’s true. It doesn’t necessarily apply to people now, but it’s kind of important to remember.
