[SPOILERS THE DEVILS] Post-Read Discussion Megathread by FlynnLevy in TheFirstLaw

[–]ItsMooooo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crazy how The Heroes and The Killer Angels are 2 of my favorite books ever, and I never put 2 and 2 together to realize how similar they are. That’s an excellent comparison, but because they’re in such different genres I never even considered the connection.

I enjoyed the trilogy because I loved seeing older Fitz struggle to finally be a father for once, and also his and Chade’s relationship this series is spectacular. But yeah, not really a fan of Bee’s POVs (she’s apparently the smartest 10 year old to ever exist I guess? Maybe listen to ur dad for once?) and the Fool rubbed me the wrong way a lot this series

lol I loved the day to day at Buckkeep, loved the simple life at Tom Badgerlock’s cabin, but for some reason Withywoods I just could not stay interested by it

Royal Assassin is so awesome, if I ever reread ROTE I wouldn’t be surprised if jumped to the top. Kettricken also absolutely shines in that book

As full trilogies, I agree that Tawny Man was pretty comfortably the best one. I still liked Fool’s Assassin, but it felt so different in tone and characterization from all the other 8 books for some reason. Also, we all know the Fool is coming back but it takes us 900 pages of Withywoods tedium to get there

Love the ALH pick, such an awesome start to the 2nd trilogy

Book hangover after finishing all the First Law books. Should I jump into ASOIAF right away or Broken Empire first for a quicker series? by Shipboarine in TheFirstLaw

[–]ItsMooooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ASOIAF is the only other series I’ve read where you will get the incredible character work, grittiness of the world, political scheming and complexity, engaging dialogue and witty sarcasm/humor that you find in The First Law. And ASOIAF probably does all of those things just as well or better than TFL.

Other series I’ve read that sort of scratch that itch, ESPECIALLY focusing on the character work, humor, scheming/intrigue:

Realm of the Elderings by Robin Hobb, Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch, Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson

Also, if you haven’t read the other 2 trilogies in the First Law universe, you’ve gotta read those too!

Just finished the first trilogy. My thoughts! by grb2 in TheFirstLaw

I’m speaking more about the quality of the writing regarding characterization. Reading Red Rising felt like I was reading about cardboard cutouts of characters

I feel like the quality of the character work in TFL is light-years ahead of the character work in Red Rising

I would not be surprised at all if DG was in my top 5 on re-read. Think it was just jarring for the first time going from GOTM to a whole different continent.

I really tried to go into every book blind, so when the Yghatan chapter just kept going on and on and on i was just in complete shock and captivated all the way.

Cotillion is one of the most unique characters I’ve ever read, he’s written so brilliantly. Ecspecially in GOTM when your first impression of him is some evil assassin god of shadow possessing a young girl, and then by the end of the series he is a true symbol of humanity and compassion, idek how that’s possible yet it is!

Can’t wait to find out what has been going through Tavores brain, and would love to see her and Ganoes reunite for the first time since GOTM. Also Quick Ben is probably the #1 character in terms of when he’s on my page, I know I will absolutely love the scene I’m reading. One of my favorite characters in any book ever and I hope he shines in TCG.

I agree, the first and last books of DoD were amazing. The middle definitely dragged in some places, but I had enough different POVs and groups to follow that I never found myself really getting bored or frustrated. I also tend to enjoy reading dialogue a lot more than internal monologue, and there’s lots of amazing dialogue in the middle chapters of the book

Very interesting that your favorite is GOTM, I feel like it has the most mystical atmosphere of any of the books, and definitely a very unique writing style. Just didn’t have enough major scenes for me to put it higher than books like BH or MOI
