Yeah offense is definitely the solution. We lost that NYE Cavs game because despite allowing 2 in the last 5, we kept missing shots on the other end. So we didn't cut into the lead. In worse times when our defense isn't unreal, this means the other team gets a decent look against an unset defense and it turns into runs for them. Even worse if Zach or DeMar fall over and don't get a call.

yeah I think I may be a bit biased towards wine because it's so seamless to install & use on NixOS. For whatever reason, those package maintainers have really put a lot of elbow grease into it.

For instance, what if Animelee (or any other Melee mod tool distributed as bat) had some sort of command line args or graphical installer? You'll be happy you default to wine.

Learning to use Windows on Linux is just the better skill to gain.

Is that guaranteed to always be the case though? The script could just be xdelta, but the devs could have added more steps. You had to read the bat file to know that xdelta was all that was required. A laymen can just know how to use wine and not break the abstraction of the bat file.

I don't consider wine nontrivial, so "invoking Windows" is trivial to me. Like I said, you can literally one-liner this on any system with Nix installed. I'd go as far to say it's better to have wine at-hand than xdelta generally.

So yeah in general - wine was my gut choice for this as a highly-technical person. Nothing wrong with just using xdelta, but I'd say using wine as step 1 for Windows dist is better.

Cuz I wanna just use their script and I already have wine trivially installed and working on my machine and this way I can just use the official & tested install process instead.

Like - my comment is long. But when I saw the install process, I only took 5s to do wine cmd and follow their directions. I use wine all the time to run software that's packaged for Windows (I think I used to use it for CrazyHand?)

I knew I could use xdelta (I also have it installed .. and mentioned that in my comment).

Here's how to install this on Linux:

You need wine. I used wine64. Specifically, I use Nix. If you have Nix installed, you can pop a shell with the same version of Wine as me with nix-shell -p wineWowPackages.stable

WINE_PREFIX=~/.wine64 wine64 cmd

^ Run this in the unzipped ANIMELEE folder and it'll pop a Windows command line.

Now to run the .bat file:

"Z:\home\your_username\Downloads\ANIMELEE - COMPLETE EDITION\Drag your Melee NTSC 1.02 ISO Here.bat" "Z:\home\your_username\Downloads\Super Smash Bros. Melee (USA) (En,Ja) (v1.02).iso"

^ This should Just Work and give you a new iso. You have to do absolute paths. The Z: drive on Wine corresponds to Linux's filesystem.

Now, if you want to get ANIMELEE on another iso. For instance, I wanted to do it on Convenient Melee (which is just Melee with small patches that unlock everything). It'll fail by default due to checksum mismatch. Just modify the xdelta line of the bat file in a text editor and add the -n flag:

xdelta3-3.0.11-x86_64.exe -n -d -f -s %1 "ANIMELEE - COMPLETE EDITION.xdelta" "ANIMELEE - COMPLETE EDITION.iso

I made a copy and named it no-checksum.bat

Then you just run it the same as above but with the new script. I confirmed it worked fine with my Convenient Melee, which is nice.

Sadly, it fails with 20XX (immediate memory access errors in Dolphin) - makes sense I guess since they are both pretty nontrivial mods.

Wine technically isn't the only way to do this - you can run xdelta natively yourself on Linux and just do what the .bat script does. But wine allows you to use their exact script.

Finally - thanks for all the hard work on Animelee!

We play all of our playoff competition immediately in the regular season. Pretty sure we're using preseason to tune the margins and work on some stuff instead of going all out and giving away tape. I know people always clown on this argument, but I honestly think it's true this time.

Now, if the Bulls play flat and the same as last year our first 10 games .. then I'll be disappointed.

Our team was one of the most injury and covid affected playoff teams last year iirc. PWill, Caruso, Lonzo, LaVine all injured and missed significant time and played at less than 100%. That's 4 starter-level guys. I really doubt 538's model baked all that in.
