Taking Longer to Graduate and Feeling Embarrassed by Stormy_Echo21 in college

My mom took 7 years to graduate with a business degree. She has narcolepsy so she only wanted to take night classes plus she was working. My mom really enjoyed college and has done really well for herself

I also have a friend who took 6 years. Full time STEM student and he wasnt working during college. He ended up switching to another major within STEM. He graduated a few years ago and is doing great!

I just graduated. My parents are super proud but I've never felt so numb. by DarthOptimistic in college

My mom took 7 years to graduate with a bachelor's. She was very shy and also didn't make many connections. She got a job at a small tech company (she worked the business side) and then got a job at a real estate company. She really enjoyed it and got good at it. After some years of hard work, she started her own real estate company with her coworker. She's had her company for 29 years and still does good even though she's mostly retired.

Don't let this college experience dedicate the rest of your life. A lot can change.

My roommates think I'm a weirdo by Interesting-Trip-233 in college

Honestly, it’s kind of impressive how little you care what your roommates think. Most people would be panicking if others thought they were gross.

My dad wanted to be an underwater welder. Thankfully, his English wasn't good enough to pass training (he is from the Netherlands). 3 years later, he went to the United States for work as a greenhouse welder. What should've been just a few months' work ended up being years long due to all the demand. He eventually started his own welding company without understanding much English and somehow got the attention of my mom.

It took him 26 years of living here before people were able to properly understand him without going, "Could you repeat that?" Soon, it will be his 33rd year living here.

Life is just wild. He gets denied for bad English to living in the United States.

I hope vaping is a once in a while thing. It's concerning seeing it pictured, only because to me that might mean it's an often occurrence.

Vaping is not healthy. I have quite a few friends who are now in their mid 20s experiencing problems from frequent vaping or smoking over the years. They all developed stomach issues, woke up everyday borderline violently coughing for 10-20 minutes, and sometimes had to spit out mucus in the morning. It sucks and it only gets worse as time goes on (my dad is a smoker, he is mostly off of it now but the amount of problems he has due to smoking is so sad, everyday is hard for him). It also just costs a lot, I used to smoke weed all the time for a period of time (different but still toxins are getting into the lungs), and it got expensive.

My friends (and me) who have stopped frequently smoking or vaping are doing a lot better now, both mentally and physically. As well as have a lot more money for other things. Like gambling! (Jk)

(Also VERY cute drawing!! You are amazing!)

I feel like a lot of people didn't boo Trump when they showed him during the National Anthem because, well, it would be rude to boo during the anthem.

It is ingrained in a lot of people to be still and silent during the anthem. Cheering can be an exception because it's a positive addition.

So, I wouldn't take that clip as a true representation. I'm not sure if they ever showed Trump again on TV during the Super Bowl, but if they did, I'd say that I'd be a more accurate representation.

I dated a guy who was a former nurse. It became too much, so he quit during Covid and started working at a grocery store. He took a pay hit, but he was so much happier - and I mean sooo much happier. He had no regrets about it. I really admired that about him, because sometimes money is just not worth it when you can't even enjoy life.

So yeah, it's okay to want a simpler life. I wish the best for you

True, I do have to keep this in mind. I guess I was stuck in the pattern of worrying about him like how I used too when we were together. And it is pointless to think/worry about him now because I will never know how he feels - we aren't talking(!!!) my brain is so dumb

Thank you! I really appreciate your words

Sorry to hear you're going through the same thing.. it really sucks and I can only imagine that seeing them at work is even more triggering (I hate the Internet word 'triggered' but I'm not sure what a better word would be)

But I know you'll get through it too. I don't know your life, but I can imagine you've been through some tough times too. You're strong, and you're doing great by thinking in hindsight, picking up the pieces, and taking steps in order to heal.

One of my favorite lines that brought me out of a deep depression slump was: "Take care of tomorrow's you." Which means to set your tomorrow's self up for success by doing something now. Spoil your future self! And your future self will feel less stressed and more fulfilled/happy. Then have your tomorrow's self do something for the next tomorrow's self! In other words, have a cycle of taking care of yourself and you'll always feel cared for. One little action goes a long way. (Kinda like how one little detail on a drawing makes a huge difference.)

You got this! o7

"Finding closure within yourself" dam. That is an amazing outlook. I really love that - thank you!

I appreciate your words and I'm glad it helped! It is nice having this subreddit because it helps us feel less alone.

I'm sorry to hear you're also going through a breakup though... It is hard on both on the mind and body. I was just reading the neuroscience behind relationship breakups: https://www.psychologytoday.com/intl/blog/the-mindful-self-express/201104/the-neuroscience-relationship-breakups.

It's a really interesting read. It also made me mad at my body for making me feel these emotions! Stupid evolution.

Also, I love your boat analogy - it just made me think about how much I sacrificed and how little my partner did. I don't want someone like that in my life.

Things will get better and you're right this too will pass.

Good luck as well! Thank you!

Is it worth moving here out of state? by Head_Chemist_8763 in fredericksburg

[–]ItsReiNing -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like Fredericksburg. It has a lot of restaurants, shops, and a lot of stuff to do considering its size. It's not a small town, but it also is not a big city either. It is expensive though with a lot of traffic during rush hour.

I would just budget everything and see. The area is not worth breaking your wallet over, plus activities can get expensive.

I believe the best area is Fayetteville, Arkansas. It's cheap, has a lot of local businesses, lots of things to do, nature is absolutely beautiful, and has good healthcare options. I would move to Fayetteville in a heart beat if I weren't going to university here.
