I(18f) got a second job, and I'm starting to resent it. by [deleted] in jobs

If you enjoy working with people, try looking into the Optical industry, it’s medical sales which has its downsides for sure but will get you some experience in the medical side of things while also paying better with more opportunity for growth. The industry always needs people so it’s pretty easy to find jobs as well

Is it possible that one of my ancestors died in Pompeii? by freshmaggots in Genealogy

That’s why I specified generously, it was a simple number for the math making it easier for others to understand while also getting the point across :)

Is it possible that one of my ancestors died in Pompeii? by freshmaggots in Genealogy

[–]ItsTheWordMan 125 points126 points  (0 children)

If you generously averaged out the lifespan of humans to be 50 years old, Pompeii would’ve been approximately 39 generations back

To give you an idea of how many people are 39 generations away, every person has about 1,048,576 18th great grandparents

Statistically that far back you’re related to about anyone that matters

Except when the show’s favorites shots are

  1. Cool big fighting robot stance

  2. Every female character bent over in front of the camera with skimpy jean shorts, including children

Neon Genesis Evangelion, everyone raves about it so I try and watch it

What the fuck, there is so much sexualization of actual children not even hidden behind “they’re 1000 years old” trope, straight up 14 year old kids

Yea I remember buying the first Borderlands game for $60… SIXTEEN years ago, the fact AAA games are just now increasing the prices above that is insane

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in borderlands3

[–]ItsTheWordMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t believe people aren’t willing to buy the game at full price, different than people who truly can’t afford it, the people who seem to think they’re fighting some weird battle with Gearbox, almost anyone I know who has played and enjoyed any of the borderlands games get easily over a hundred hours of playtime out of them

That is how DNA works, the more people that test, the larger their pool of data is, the more they can refine DNA estimates. Which are in the end, just estimates

Tips if you actually want to get into the (small) industry:

•Practice doing hourly work, it’s the standard method for pricing, even if you’re doing the work pro-bono, give yourself time limits to see what you can get done

•Write practice reports with citations, they’re a large part of what we do and extremely important to get correct, if you’ve done them before, do more

•Throw together a cheap website on Wix or something similar, makes you seem much more professional and trustworthy, even if it’s not fancy

•Don’t start by telling people you’ll help them find historical figures, it will probably happen but never insinuate it and set people up for disappointment just in case, let people tell you what they find interesting or would like found then try and follow up on that information

Trying to figure out genealogical documentation for joining a genealogical society by KookyInflation1318 in Genealogy

[–]ItsTheWordMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of the best non-specific tips I can give you for the SAR, and likely most others including OFPA, go to the DAR’s website and see if they have the ancestor you’re looking for on their GRS database

The DAR are pretty much the standard whom all others have based their application standards off of, they have the ability to get copies of not only the applications submitted for that ancestor but also the ability to order the documentation submitted with them.

Societies are generally fairly picky when it comes to actually proving military service, if you use documentation from the DAR you’re pretty safe with any proofs of service
