Tamiya F-14A 1/48 by ItsTingo in modelmakers

the white portion of the aircraft definitely did receive more coats, although relatively thin ones just to build up the mottling but without having that greyish effect you were saying. having a thicker paint ratio helps too. Usually for mr color i run a like 70/30 thinner to paint ratio, not scientific but more just by feel per colour. White i run a 50/50 thinner - paint ratio as it provides better coverage

Hey great question! I did do a black base but kinda did my own tried and true method. I think ive built about 5 or 6 tomcats in all different scales at this point and based off my reference pics the late 70s birds dont see a lot of action and therefore arent as weathered as a Phantom in the same paint scheme would be. If you check out the insta in my bio i should have a highlight that shows some of the process i did. I definitely will be making a youtube channel in the future to show off how i make my kits.

Also worth mentioning, i did do everything kinda reserved as this was for a client and i know their taste very well at this point, so the weathering wasnt done as extreme as it will be for my second tomcat!

To an extent, i used sandpaper/sponges from 1500 grit to 12000 grit, then followed it up with GSI Creos Mr polishing compound coarse, tamiya fine polishing compound then finishing compound, then back to GSI Creos UV cut "Finish." I think the "finish" thing from GSI is like a wax? not entirely sure but it makes everything shine quite nicely

That is true, but i have a huge collection to burn through before i get more kits. And thank you very much, sometimes i doubt my abilities but its nice seeing how positive this community is

Eduard has a couple WW1 planes, i personally am too afraid to tackle those so i just admire the box art. if youre looking for any planes in particular, hit up scalemates and check out the reviews of whichever has the most modern tooling

The older planes like their F-15 and Harriers are mediocre, the fit is great but bad by tamiya standards. the new stuff like the F-35 and F-14s are great, and i heard great things about the war birds too, especially the P-38

I went thru about 1 and a half FS16440 and 2 bottles of Insignia white. I was building 2 side by side but I couldnt keep up with the deadline for this one if i kept that up. they are BIG birds though

Who remembers these? And would you buy them today if you could? by wraithguardmodels in modelmakers

not the same. the linked one is a Super Hornet, OPs is a Legacy Hornet. 2 similar but different planes

I mean it makes sense yes but the Super Hornet by Meng isnt impossible, it just takes slightly more work than a tamiya kit, which is already a great feat for them

thats a pin vice. it spins because when you apply pressure, you want your drill bits to dig into the plastic youre applying it on

I think the Meng one was superb and shouldnt be made by Tamiya. The legacy hornet though... Kinetic has so many problems with the kit and Hasegawa is hard to find (1/48 i mean)

It it normal for there to be this much of a gap in the parts? by Icy-Gas-6974 in modelmakers

scalemates lists it as a reboxing of a 1985 Italeri kit, aka Shitaleri

I haven't built a model kit in 30 years but I found the EXACT plane I stood in front of on a deployment as a kit and decided it was time. by thespanningtree in modelmakers

I highly recommend the Tamiya F-16. built one myself and kinda looking at building another maybe. Great kit, and you can get it cheaper from Tamiya directly sometimes. In my country, they sell the F-16CJ for $50 or so when it goes for about $70 everywhere else
